  1. Did he tell you anything about the model on the cover of "The Natural Soul"? My buddy had him sign "Good Gracious" and he was telling us the woman's name and that she was a beautician.
  2. Quite an evening! I also thought the band were a great time. Lou performed two vocals (one Ellington and another about a dream that mentioned George Bush), Cherokee, Gravy Train, Bye Bye Blackbird (prefaced by Lou mentioning he was about to perform a tune Miles Davis used to perform "when he still played jazz"), and a couple more standards associated with Charlie Parker. I thought the band was quite good and my buddy that was looking forward to seeing Dr. Lonnie Smith did bring up that he wasn't at the gig. In fact, Akiko Tsurogi sold out her CDs before we could get one. After the show Lou autographed my copy of "Here 'Tis" and posed for a picture with me.
  3. Thank you for the review! I have tickets for Lou Donaldson tonight at the Dakota. I am really excited. BTW: I saw Booker T and The MGs on Saturday night as well. Quite a great evening with great music and a nice breeze at the outdoors venue.
  4. Completely shocked... Last night, I saw Booker T & The MGs and had one of my greatest concert experiences. After the show I told my friend that if I would love to see Isaac Hayes, one of my favorite Stax artists, but he hasn't played in town for a long as I can recall. Too sad, in one weekend Bernie Mac and Black Moses gone.
  5. I recently came across one of Compost LPs at work. We were playing the recent Flaming Lips CD when I mentioned that one of the instrumentals had recently won a Grammy for best instrumental. My boss responded he had someyhing better to listen to, so out came Life Is Round. I was pretty skeptical but actually enjoyed it quite a bit. He ended up letting me have it for $3! I will have to spin it again tonight.
  6. Weird. When I called around that time they said there were twenty left.
  7. I have been thinking about buying the Lou Donaldson for sometime. The discount, I just bought tickets to see him, and the fact that I could have it sent with a Roy set may have pushed me to get off the fence.
  8. A ton of stuff arrived over the weekend from Da Bastards and my work: Jackson Conti: Sujinho (Already listened to it twice and I am loving it!) Midwest Funk (Now Again) Willie Bobo- Spanish Grease/Uno dos tres/1*2*3 Hank Ballard- You Can't Keep A Good Man Down Calypso King & The Sounl Investigators-Soul Strike! Bill Cosby/Badfoot Brown & The Bunions Bradford Funeral & Marching Band Harlem River Drive Karl Hector & The Malcouns-Sahara Swing Melvin Jackson- Funky Skull Kashmere Stage Band-Texas Thunder Soul 1968-1974 Patato/Totico Lalo Schifrin: Black Widow Yesterday's New Quintet-Stevie
  9. I would push it and actually speak to someone in customer service or the owner. You have a long history with the company without any problems, it is obviously a deffect issue, and you are less then a week over there deadline so it is in no way a "unusual amount of time." From my expereince working music retail sometimes people need to be reminded of the actual human and unrealisitic side of the consequences of these kind of blanket type policies. Please keep the board posted on any results you may have. I usually hold off on ordering from them until I have a pretty big order (to save on shipping), so I would like to hear how they resolve this.
  10. Compost-Life Is Round A co-worker put this one in my hold bin. When I saw the cover I first thought why would I want that but I flipped it over and it features Harold Vick, Jack DeJohnette, Jumma Santos, Bob Moses, etc. Pretty funky stuff.
  11. For the last night of three straight nights of music yesterday it was Drive-By Truckers at First Avenue. It was my first time seeing them and I was pretty impressed.
  12. Last night it was Lucinda Williams at the MN Zoo. Tonight it is Bootsy Collins performing "A Tribute to the Godfather of Soul" featuring Phelps Catfish Collins, Jabo Starks, Clyde Stubblefield, Johnny Griggs, Bart Anderson Byrd, Tony Wilson, etc. There has been talk that Fred Wesley will be there as well.
  13. Just started spinning this for the first time. So far it has seemed pretty solid but I wouldn't call it better or worse than the other two Blue Note CDs. I am on track nine ("All I Need") and I finally found a song I would rank somewhere near the peak era from the 1970s. Though nothing as moving as Jesus Is Waiting...
  14. I would have preferred a Red Sox trade for those players but I would have liked to have seen Santana in a Red Sox uniform and playing with David Ortiz. Also, when they won the World Series we could say that 3 former MN sports figure went all the way with Boston area sports teams! I will see where I am in a couple of years but so far I am still happy with the Met's trade. Go Go seems to working out and they are having a fun run right now. Another interesting perspective to add to would be if the Twins had kept Garza and not traded him for Delmon Young.
  15. Hello Michael Weiss, I just noticed the Dakota has the Lou Donaldson Quartet listed for August 11 and 12. Do you have any idea if this band and you will be playing the gig?
  16. I thought this was pretty interesting. I know the Dakota (in Minneapolis) booked the group for the Sunday before this appearance but they are billing it a little different: Still Black Still Proud:PeeWee Ellis & Fred Wesley I bought tickets after seeing Maceo because the guy that books the show said it would be an African drum ensemble with Wesley and Ellis playing the music of James Brown. If Hargrove will actually be there as well that could be quite an added bonus but for I don't think it is likely he will be playing uncredited. Yeah, the Jazz Institute is bringing in Roy Hargrove for this show only - otherwise the same lineup as far as I know with a different billing. Thanks for the clarification and I am still excited about the Minneapolis show.

  18. Emotional interview with Michelle Tafoya with KG right after the game. Seeing his reaction was pretty intense for me and then his shout out to "sota" pushed me over the edge. I am so happy he finally won a NBA Championship.
  19. I do not know the CD status of the Roulette but I have the other 3 on compact disc. I think they would make a great Select but the problem is I think there would be too many companies to work with for one set.
  20. Great news! I have all of them on LP but I would still pre-order this set. Hopefully something to look forward to around Christmas.
  21. Tonight I saw the Dave Brubeck Quartet at Orchestra Hall. It was fun how he worked the bad weather we had in the area today into the first set. He played Gone With The Wind, Stormy Weather, On The Sunny Side of the Street, and Over the Rainbow.

    Deep Purple

I started following them during the Mark II reunion on the 1980s. My older brother went to the show, so I had a chance then to hear much of the 70s/80s Gillan material (even his album singing for Black Sabbath!). It wasn't until recently that I started listening to it all again and I heard some of the Coverdale/Hughes material for the first time.
