What live music are you going to see tonight?

Bettye LaVette tonight at the Dakota -
Proof ... Organissimo in south-western Germany, unfortunately the only copies I'm aware of in the area. I'm talkin' 'bout Organissimo. Seriously, I didn't mean it as an attack or accusation against anyone.

I just donated some money towards the costs of operating the site for this year (2007). Whatever is decided for my member fees for the future I can take care of as well. I don't know why I didn't do it sooner but since it can be paid with PayPal it won't be an issue in the future. Not to side track the discussion but I think as members we should all think about the supporting the band as well. Making this place financially feasible for the band is one thing but buying their music should be just as important. They needed to be out of the red as well. Just my two cents.

I would have never thought of the Tiger's as a team in the hunt for either of these players. Maybe it is just another sign of how much the dynamics have changed toward the AL Central. It is kind of weird that Dontrelle Willis will no longer have a chance to bat with every start. -

I wonder how this changes things in the Santana trade talks (I have heard the Angels I have re-joined the mix): Tigers set to acquire Cabrera, Willis Maybin, Miller and four other prospects would go to Florida By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Marlins and Tigers are on the verge of completing a blockbuster deal that will send Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to Detroit for a package of six players. A source familiar with the negotiations has told MLB.com that the Tigers are parting with outfielder Cameron Maybin and lefty starter Andrew Miller and four prospects for the final two players from the Marlins' 2003 World Series championship squad. The deal was all but finalized as of late afternoon at the Winter Meetings. The Tigers swooped into the sweepstakes for Cabrera and Willis on Tuesday and put together a package of players that the Marlins felt too tempting to pass up. Cabrera and Willis were both rookies on the Marlins '03 title team. Both are eligible for arbitration through the 2009 seasons. Cost has become a concern for Florida, making the two All-Stars expendable. Cabrera is a four-time All-Star who comes off a season where he batted .320 with 34 home runs and 119 RBIs. The 24-year-old made $7.4 million this past season and he is in line to earn more than $10 million in 2008. Willis is coming off a 10-15 season with a 5.17 ERA. While the D-Train, who made $6.45 million in 2007, is coming off his worst season, he compiled 205 1/3 innings, marking his third straight 200-plus season. Maybin and Miller were both first-round Draft picks of the Tigers, Maybin in 2005 and Miller in 2006. Both have tasted the Major Leagues. Maybin, 20, made his debut in August and appeared in 24 games, hitting .143 with one home run in 49 at-bats. However, he made a rapid rise through the Tigers system, batting .304 with 10 homers in 83 games for Class A Lakeland before making a brief stop at Double-A Erie. Miller, 22, made 13 starts for Detroit last season, going 5-6 with a 5.69 ERA. In 78 Minor League innings in 2007, he allowed 71 hits and struck out 61 batters. He was drafted out of the University of North Carolina. -

There has been talk of them doing that but it seems reserved for after Santana has been traded. It seems Rincon is also being shopped. -

If this is the deal I can accept this trade. It helps the Twins in the long run and the short term. I just hope that the Red Sox can work out a long term deal with Johan because it seems like it could be a good place for him. Heck, any deal that makes the Sox "the greatest team in the history of the friggin Universe" can't be a bad thing since our the Timberwolves have put the Celtics close to that title as well! -

La Velle E. Neal III (from the Star Tribune) states in his blog: Tuesday morning: Is there a deal? Tuesday, December 4th, 2007 The Twins negotiated with the Yankees and Red Sox throughout the night. I packed up around 1 a.m. and was headed for my hotel. Then I got word of this. It could mean that the Red Sox and Twins have reached agreement on a deal involving Johan Santana. I’ve spent the offseason speculating on names and possible transactions. When it’s time to write about the finalization of a deal, there’s no time for educated guessing. I prefer to be as certain as possible about the names involved. Around 2 a.m. I contacted someone with knowledge of the negotiations. That person had heard that the deal was for four players: Jon Lester, Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson. Notice that Jacoby Ellsbury is not part of the deal. I didn’t run with it then because I really wanted to be sure. But I want to let you know this morning that’s what I’m hearing. I’m still trying to get further confirmation of the potential deal. Maybe the exchange of medicals isn’t as serious of a step as we think. Maybe a name has been switched (i.e. Rincon, Juan for Morlan, Eddie). What makes this more difficult is that, if true, Santana’s agent, Peter Greenberg, has to swing into action and negotiate a contract extension. Until then, both the Twins and Red Sox may barricade themselves in their suites, forcing a Smokin’ Aces showdown with the media. In this case, most of my information has come from trusted individuals from other clubs because the Twins have kept their plans, thoughts, whims and dreams hermetically sealed down here. So save your final reactions until we make sure of the players involved. -
I want to thank Organissimo for having this board. I didn't post very often (more of a lurker!) but I want to thank everyone for the great music conversations and hip recommendations.

What do you folks think of David Simon's The Corner?

I love this show. It hasn't received as much attention as other more popular HBO shows but to me The Wire has had greater payoffs.

Thank you for the heads up! I have been on the fence about seeing him perform in March with Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra. Hearing the info prompted me to see if there were tickets, which I broke down and bought because they were on sale for $45. The program has Webern Passacaglia, Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3, and Shostakovich Symphony No. 6. -
They really put some time into posting all of the extra auctions. I have a feeling the seller pissed off an LP buyer and they have gotten revenge! Maybe it is just a dream of mine for the sellers that grade VG- LPs near mint.

Yesterday we were clear of snow but this morning it has started to snow. It has been reported that we are going to get 6-8 inches today.

From La Velle E. Neal III's blog (who is a baseball writer for the Minneapolis Star Tribune): Twins close to landing Delmon Young [updated] Wednesday, November 28th, 2007 The Twins and Tampa Bay Rays are close to finalizing a multi-player deal, according to several sources with knowledge of the discussions. The deal could be announced as soon as today. The main pieces changning teams would be outfielder Delmon Young, the first overall pick in 2003, and righthander Matt Garza. But indications were strong on Wednesday that as many as six players could be involved. In addition to Garza, the Twins would send Tampa Bay shortstop Jason Bartlett and reliever Juan Rincon for Young, shortstop Brendan Harris and outfielder Jason Pridie. Pridie was with the Twins during spring training of 2006 as a Rule 5 pick. Twins players for several weeks had expected the club to deal for either Young or B.J. Upton. Young, 22, hit .288 last season with 13 homers and 93 RBI and is considered one of the better young hitters in the game. Harris, 27, hit .286 with 12 homers and 59 RBI. [uPDATE]: This would be the first big move by Twins General Manager Bill Smith since taking over for Terry Ryan in September. And it’s not expected to be his last. The Twins are talking to teams about staff ace Johan Santana and could deal closer Joe Nathan as well. The Twins would be expected to land at least one starting pitcher if Santana and/or Nathan is dealt. That would make up for the loss of Garza, a top pitching prospect. The Twins also need a center fielder and third baseman. It was learned on Wednesday that the Twins have shown some interest in free agent center fielder Aaron Rowand, but it’s unclear if they’ve made a contract offer. The addition of Young could lead to the Twins non-tendering outfielder Craig Monroe, who was dealt to the Twins from the Cubs a few weeks ago. Check back here for more details - or when the deal is officially announced. -
I second these recordings. I love all of the Riverside Blue Mitchell stuff. I loved his stuff with Horace Silver but these recordings brought my appreciation to a whole 'nother level.

Thanks! With the additional 10% off I was able to buy the Complete Stax/Volt Soul Singles, Vol. 2 for $81. I have been on the fence on this material for sometime but at that price I jumped.

When I clicked on the link I thought to myself the only member of the band that could die that would actually spell the end of the group would be Kevin DuBrow. So it is kind of funny that he was actually kicked out of the group at one point! I never really cared for them much back in the day. Maybe because he had a "feud" with Ozzy when Randy Rhodes left Quiet Riot to join his band. If you would have told me at that time that Ozzy would out live him, I would have said you were crazy.

I am sorry you car was stolen Soulstation. This thread reminds of when the Big Lebowski recovered his stolen car. Like you he was lucky his tunes were still in the car. Look on the bright side: some vagrant didn't sleep in your car or use it for a toilet.

The only way this was noticeable was that slower songs were in the set between one or two faster tunes that took more work for her. -

So, how was Sharon ? She was wonderful. No Budos Band but the Dap Kings and her (at least the Dap Kings) were on stage for a solid two hours. The place was very packed. She said that it was the first show she had ever sold out. When you saw her did she do James Brown songs for the encore? BTW: Dr. Stanley was a treat tonight. He doesn't play banjo much (only one song) but the band and him were great. The highlights were Angel Band, Pretty Polly (my request), and Oh, Death
