  1. This reminds me alot of the Tigers taking out the Yankees last year. You wait so damn long, and then suddenly your team does the impossible. Obviously, beating the Yankees is better, but for a Warriors fan, this is almost as good as a championship. Maybe we can see a Chris Webber-Golden State finals!
  2. Never listed to Dino Jr, but the word on the streets is that the new one in quite nice. No chance of you being disappointed.
  3. Nowitzki may have played the worst game imaginable with a season on the line like that. Cuban might need to trade him. Crazy. As a Pistons fan, seeing Mavs and Heat go out in the first round certainly helps. Hopefully someone can knock off the Spurs and Suns while we are at it.
  4. The National - Boxer is my record of the year so far. Absolutely gorgeous. Works fantastically as a driving around at night record. I will see them on saturday opening for The Arcade Fire. Suffice to say my AF opinions are about opposite Clem's, although we do agree on U2. The new AF is just ok, but Funeral is one of the best records of the past ten years.
  5. Now I'm interested!
  6. Baron Davis is still scary good. Dirk just seems angry all the time, you cant play like that and win. There is a difference between intense and just annoyed. I think the warriors may have lost their chance tonight.
  7. Zinn certainly falls under the 'political axe to grind.' His scholarship is still quite good, and has a great peal of personal experience with social movements of the 50s-70s. Zinn makes no bones about the fact that America is an imperialist nation that has routinely engaged in behaviors that all of us should be shocked about. Unfortunately, some people consider his lack of apologetics to be a bias. He writes in a way that is certainly intended to provoke, but there is no denying the accuracy of much of his work. It may be a bit one-sided, but it does a good job of challenging misconceptions, and provoking thought, which may be the most important thing for any historian to do. As long as you read it knowing his intent (which he spells out clearly in the introduction) it is a fascinating read. It is actually the only comprehensive history of the US (that I am familiar with) that I consider worthwhile, and I almost recommended it in my first post. As an added bonus, you can read the whole thing online right here: http://www.historyisaweapon.org/zinnapeopleshistory.html
  8. It still depends on the person and on the use. Ipod have certainly made it easier for music to be turned into a throwaway commodity, to be consumed and quickly forgotten, like a fast food cheeseburger. But that certainly doesnt mean it is more or less common today than it was in 1965, or 75, or 85. When your were young, you likely surrounded yourself with intense music fans. As the real world kept going, you came into contact with more 'average' music fans, whether it is your co-worker, next door neighbor, or even your son. This may give you the impression that music has become less important to the current generation, I would be careful about making such an accusation. I am 25 years old, and 100% of my listening is done on an ipod. I want to have 7500 songs with me at all times (although at very high quality mp3, double what itunes sells its files at.) For me, technology had made me MORE of a music fan. I am able to listen to a much more wide variety of stuff, and to learn about a much more wide variety. Now, it has no doubt meant that I have listened less to specific CDs than i did before ipods and the internet. But stuff that truly moves still gets many many repeated listening. And I know it is true of many of my generation. Technology, for many, including musicians, has been much better for the love of music.
  9. Not so sure about The American Pageant http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_American_Pageant A name like that should set off alarms anyways. As far as a general overview, especially once with no political axe to grind, I dont think there is one. American history is not easily condensed, and any condensing must be done with the use of themes and ideas that can easily be considered a political axe. I think you are much better served reading books on specific topics, or by reading several overviews but knowing exactly what the authors biases are (and they ALL have biases, or atleast strong beliefs.) Any book that claims to be an accurate or bias-free representation of history is, in my opinion, completely worthless. History is not the recitation of events, but the interpretation of events. There is no way to avoid opinions, and in fact they should be EMBRACED. I say just start at the beginning and read books dealing with specific chronological areas, especially as you say length isnt an issue. In my opinion, there is no better place to start than: "The Creation of the American Republic" by Gordon S. Wood
  10. I tried looking for the specs on this but couldnt find it. Even so, I am almost 100% certain that this isnt true. The home dock/stereo things use the lineout of the ipod, but there has already been the digital to analog conversion, just no amplification of it. Not that it really matters, im sure it still sounds nice. I plan on getting one eventually. For now I just hook up the ipod directly to the computer speakers I have set up in the living room, those arent too portable though.
  11. Brady Quinn and Joe Thomas? My guess is SS is a happy man. Add in Jamal Lewis, Eric Steinbach, a healthy Braylon and Kellen, and you just might have an amazing offense.
  12. In 2001 Cincinnati drafted a couple picks behind the Browns each round, they came away with: Justin Smith DE Rudi Jonson RB Chad Johnson WR TJ Housmanzadeh WR Clevlands best pick BY FAR? Quincy Morgan, Bummer, SS. Nothing will beat the Packers in 1989, picks 1-5: Troy Aikman Tony Madarich Barry Sanders Derrick Thomas Deion Sanders 4 of the greatest players to ever play their positions, and the Packers get Mandarich. Us Pistons fans refer to it as 'their Darko draft'
  13. Rick Mirer was a pretty dominant force. Players drafted after Tim Couch in 1999: Donovan McNabb Edgeriin James Ricky Williams Torry Holt Champ Bailey Daunte Culpepper Oh, and LaDainian Tomlinson was drafter two picks after Gerard Warren. I wonder whoe could put together the best team of complete first round busts, the Lions or the Browns. Speaking of the Lions, they will definitely take Calvin Johnson at no 2, and then try to trade him.
  14. Once a file has been compressed, there is nothing you can to do to retrieve that information. Convert it to a wav, or flac, or any other lossless codec and it will sound exactly the same. Sorry Jim, but it only sounded better because you wanted it to sound better. 1. HD space (yes, its cheap, but most music fans would still need about 500 gb to store a lossless library. That aint cheap. And if you think it is, I will send you and address to mail me a HD.) 2. Lossless destroys battery life on portable players 3. For 99.9% of people there is no audible difference between lossless and a well encoded mp3.
  15. It is insane the money spent on HD and plasma screens and what not, as audio is considered completely negligible. The only time it enter the mainstream is when people vastly overpay for Bose. We have seen a pretty big increase in headphone audio, however. Especially IEMs, the little in ear ones.
  16. One of my top 3 or 4 favorites. I have Timelines going right now. rarely has music ever been this beautiful.
  17. The last three season, the only guy Shaq has lost too in the post season was Big Ben. Plus, the Bulls are maybe the only team young and athletic, and physical, enough to slow down Wade. As a Pistion fan, I sure hope they do.
  18. What I love most about the end of the year is when everything is wrapped up and the young kids get to play some minutes. A few noteworthy examples. Amir Johnson - Detroit. This kid can flat out play. He tore through the NBDL the last few years, he had a 12/10 and 6 block performance the other night, and then dropped 20-14 and 5 blocks tonight. Him and Maxiell should both peak as Sheed, Dyess and Webber finally flame out. I dont think either will be All-Star, but both will be VERY solid players, with Amir having an outside chance at stardom. Willie Green - Philly. Missed almost all of last season with a knee injury, but he has managed some nice minutes this year. Now with some playing time he had 26, 24, and 39(!) point games to end the season. Chicago plays Miami in the first round, I really like their chances of taking out the Heat, which lines up a Big Ben vs the Pistons 2nd round.
  19. These sound fantastic. Those early releases were just obscene. I know what I will be listening to for the next few weeks.
  20. His work gets better and better the more you read it. I highly recommend trying to read just about all of them. KV just might have been the biggest influence on my life. Also, from an environmental standpoint he was (unfortunately) decades ahead of the rest of us. In the 50s and 60s all of his books dealt with poisoning the planet in some way. "We are only healthy to the extent that ours ideas are humane." -KV
  21. SHEEEEEEEEEEEED! That was just plain insane. Make sure to check out sportscenter or or online to watch that shot. Just plain ridiculous.
  22. Great interview, Boyd at one time claims (and I have no reason not to believe him) that he was the impetus behind Eric Clapton's decision to record Crossroads. Also, Fresh Air is available for free as a podcast on itunes. AMAZING!
  23. Mavs win employing the 'neat the hell out of poor little Rip Hamilton' strategy. Stons still played well though, especially without Billups. Darko with a double double against big daddy too.
