  1. I’ll give you the blossom of Tony’s writing, and I do return to Story Of Neptune more than the other late BNs, but the sense of spontaneity, exploration and wonder is not what is was in the ’60s. But then again, the objectives were different, too. Now you could lay some of the blame at Pierce’s feet, and maybe he wasn’t the best fit... but damn! I like Billy’s neo-bop and at least Ralph Moore wasn’t taggin’ along (or someone who might pass out and soil himself on the stand)!
  2. So Spring is the only recording of Rivers and Shorter together? That is a shame; their compatible yet contrasting styles made for a wonderful frontline. But I guess it makes sense, too. If I remember correctly, Sam was (is?) fiercely territorial about his sound and afraid other saxmen could influence him. I’ll take Lifetime and Spring over the ’80s Blue Note recordings any day, hour and minute. It’s not a fair comparison, though. On one hand, the world was fresh and full of possibility, and on the other, Williams’ goal (I’ve read) was to update Miles’ Second Quintet style into the ’80s. Boy, Lifetime would make for one outstanding SACD!* *Standard personal biases apply, of course.
  3. Lifetime does have a more open, spacious feeling than Spring, yet the two compliment each other very nicely —I burned both onto a CD-R for easy back-to-back enjoyment. Outside of Spring, did Rivers and Shorter ever record together?
  4. So much for my advice to the groom at my stepdaughter’s eventual wedding.
  5. I know what you mean. I kinda feel the same way about anybody who repeatedly uses Mosaic’s customer review section as if it were a bulletin board.
  6. There’s a phrase I first heard in Blue Velvet that I thought was a stroke of genius at the time. It’s been repeated many times since, or at least something very close to it, but hearing,“You fucking fucker, you fuck!” always puts a smile on my face. I mean really, how could anybody be offended by such a ridiculously single-minded structure? Bravo!
  7. It took me a long time to appreciate “Fall.” I just didn’t get it. Then one night while I was in that state between wake and sleep, it all suddenly made sense. It still does and now it might be my favorite cut from Nefertiti.
  8. lukrion, as I understand it, the RVG CD and SACD CD layer are the same (Kevin has more detailed info). If you generally like CD RVGs, then you’ll enjoy the SACD Blue Train or re-mastered CD just fine.
  9. Lukrion, did they snag your SACD player too? Bastards. As you might expect, there’s also a range of opinions concerning the SACD layer. view with squinted eyes
  10. Not to put a fly in the ointment, and not to put too fine a point on it, but there is a difference between linking an image and translating the linked image elsewhere. Viewing an image away from its host removes context. If any ultra-anal organization were to argue the point –and believe you me, there’s not many organizations much more sensitive than those devoted to golf history– that’s the issue I’d expect them to take. Prank aside, of course.
  11. Holy shrivlin’ junk, Bat Man! Even an IP check proves nothing. How diabolical! Oh, she’s very real. I have the warm fuzzies and battle scars to prove it.
  12. Now what the Hell am I ’sposed to do with that? Oh, this does not bode well…
  13. Jeez, I wouldn’t want my junk within 10 feet of that, but… There’s really just one question: We may deduce where it’s been, but where will it turn up next? The Tonight Show? Disneyland? Oprah?
  14. And with that, my other half has won the battle. Now let’s all contemplate the deeper meaning of this image.
  15. Why, I’ve half a mind to start a new thread like, “Items extricated from humorless women associated with golf.” Just think of the possibilities. Fortunately the other half is winning.
  16. Perhaps B3-er or Use3D may be of assistance?
  17. I’m not sure the marketing department knew what to do with this DVD. The theatrical trailers gave the viewer a reasonable idea of what the film would deal with, but the DVD TV spots emphasize the suspense/thriller elements of Solaris over the love story. Although I like the film, I think it’s a mistake to market the DVD in such a way.
  18. Ya learn somethin’ every day. Sometimes. I thought making a thing look like something it is not was the definition of kitsch; a salt shaker in the shape of the Eiffel Tower or a Venus D’Milo statuette with a clock in its belly. So anything cheesy is kitsch? Well then, I’d like you all to meet the upper-management I work with.
  19. Thanks for the support, Soul Stream. Yup, tobacco companies are pretty dirty and the feds are happy to tell us so. But the government’s guilty of finger-pointing while hustling increased tobacco tax revenue that was originally earmarked for cessation programs. Absolute two-faced bastards those feds. Well, neither of these groups will be climbing on my back again.
  20. I quite one month ago. I’m tired of relying on a substance to keep from feeling bad, tired of the government financially raping me for my addiction and I’m getting too old to play BS games with my health. You’d think that I’d be able to stay away from the occasional cheat smoke, but that simply isn’t true. Not quite yet anyway. I like the positive reinforcement approach, you know? The money that would have been spent on the first two weeks worth of smokes paid for my Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia set.
  21. Argh! Dynamic range. Like a moth to flame, I can’t avoid piping in on this subject any more than Chris can abstain from… In general, I’ll take an early McMaster over an RVG any day. Tonal balance can be adjusted by the listener, but there’s no fix for over compression. In my experience, most RVGs have all the dynamic range of a television broadcast and lead to fatigue much quicker than early McMasters. Heavy compression seems to be today’s industry standard and damned if I can figure out why that is. Unfortunately McMaster has been leaning as heavily on compression as RVG in recent years, but Malcolm Addey, God bless him, is bucking the trend and is still preserving some healthy dynamics. His work on Mosaic’s recent Stitt set, for example, is wonderful. Ya know, I think Malcolm’s the only Blue Note re-issue engineer whose work is liked and respected by all; RVG-ers and anti-RVG-ers alike. Too bad the man doesn’t do more work for Blue Note & Mosaic. Please Blue Note, have a heart and send any future SACD re-issues Malcolm’s way!
  22. So the neighbors have the bottom end covered and they don’t speak English. A few courteous hand gestures and those screaming trumpet will get the point across. Also, it’s probably best to avoid any pelvis shaking in your bridge-the-gap pantomimes. Seriously, moving from an apartment to a house doesn’t guarantee peace of mind. Sometimes neighbors see ownership as a license to inflict even more of their fine musical bounty on others.
  23. No digital camera, but I’ve a scanner. I’ve also an old copy of PhotoShop on an even older Mac –so posted photos may not accurately reflect Granfalloon II. We’ll see.
  24. In my experience, jazz wins over just about everything else at comparable volume levels. Especially if we’re talking trumpet. Those horns cut through just about anything; walls, floors, double-pained windows, fine masonry and R&B Disco… and do so at moderate volumes. Soul Stream’s right though; a courtesy call is your be chance for peace.
