  1. That Williamson album was a favourite when it first came out. Strong player who has been sadly underrecorded and from the other angle
  2. Julie Tippetts - Sunset Glow [Utopia] such a strong and early statement as a solo artist
  3. Me too now. Thanks Sidewinder! I missed out on the Impressed CD so this is the first time I've heard the music. Lovely stuff, fine sound indeed
  4. Marc Levin Ensemble - Songs Dances and Prayers [Centrifuga, 2017] lovely sounding Levin authorised reissue. Nice artwork repro and extra notes from Levin. A very nice update of an all time favourite the original of which is now a bit tired
  5. Wonderful experience each time I've seen them. They really are like no one else out there
  6. Thanks for the alert. Just placed my order whilst listening to Yusef Lateef - The Golden Flute (HMV Mono)
  7. Nice review of a very varied evening's music. The Homburger/Guy duet to start set a very high bar - such consummate music making that made a mockery of categories. I was taken and surprised by how frail Howard Riley appears. Hopefully the apparent discomfort is more in our eyes than in his experience. It was my first experience of his playing live and I was spellbound. I had been very impressed by Wickihalder when he stood in for the "allegedly" sulking/offended Watts at Oto and it was good to see this trio follow on from that impression. Niggli was a force of nature, both loud and soft, throughout the evening. It's great to see the venue so full but I do find that they can overlook the comfort levels whilst cramming in those extra twenty or so.
  8. RIP. I enjoy The ECM/Japo LPs and also European Jazz Sounds
  9. Listening to "Piano Song" now and it's a very strong recording and will be a good one to end with if that is indeed the case. The interview is fairly ambivalent as I read it. Seems to me that he feels a break is a positive move at the moment. He's left us enough very good music to listen to and as long as he pops over to London every now an again so be it.
  10. I very much hope this gets released, such a good line up. It will be good to hear Charig again I really enjoy the Bloc Thyristor releases that feature Pilz from a few years ago
  11. Very pleased to see more Tomeka Reid on the way
  12. The Necks - Unfold [Ideologic Organ] new label, same magnificence
  13. I was at the gig. It was a pretty astonishing evening's music so I'm very pleased to see this is on the horizon
  14. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Peel's collection didn't stay in the family. His son's on Radio 6 following in the parental footsteps the last I heard young Ms.Gustafsson's going to have a some interesting decisions to make when she's a fair bit older as I can't see Mats relinquishing any of that vinyl whilst he still has his wits about him
  15. A sumptuous set by the looks of things. I might well be interested but there's precious little info on the Ornette website that I can find - no line ups, neither for the Ornette concert nor the Memorial concert. there's more info about the artwork than the music. If I'm going to spend $100 plus $30 postage to UK I want to know more first. Someone tell me I'm just not looking in the correct place on the site.... Now found the line ups for the tracks http://www.ornettecoleman.com/tracklisting/ risks being less than the sum of its parts I suspect but still a nice item for the superfan/collector
  16. That sounds like a fantastic evening. The string players have recorded together https://www.discogs.com/Mazz-Swift-Tomeka-Reid-Silvia-Bolognesi-Hear-In-Now/release/4253317 I've not heard it but keep meaning to buy a copy. Roscoe Mitchell's bringing the current line up of AEOC to Cafe Oto this week
  17. Mulatu Astatke still regularly tours in Europe and UK, not sure about the US Alexander Hawkins, of this parish, plays piano/keyboards in his touring band
  18. Richard Davis/Walt Dickerson - Dialogue Johnny Dyani Quartet - Song For Biko Kirk Knuffke - Little Cross, the strength of which leads me to want to follow jlhoots advice above
  19. The International Jazz Orchestra Under The Direction Of Benny Golson - Stockholm Sojourn [Stateside/EMI] this morning's arrival
  20. such an intro is a good way of raising your profile at the very least I'm tempted to mention stones and glass houses having listened to this
  21. Ornette Coleman - Town Hall, 1962 [ESP/Fontana] Ornette Coleman - Crisis [Impulse] Ornette Coleman - The Unprecedented Music Of [Passport] Ornette Coleman - New York Is Now [Blue Note] Ornette Coleman - Love Call [Blue Note] somewhat of a binge today. Such uplifting music
  22. Sad indeed. His rhythms were so essential to the Can sound
  23. thanks. I did go and read the website details of the subscription. Intakt releases are generally more expensive in the UK anyway, maybe £14/15 (probably for the reasons you describe) but the subscription is equivalent of £20 per disc (I assume with postage on top) which is asking a lot. I realise the sponsor angle is attractive and if I had a stronger connection to the label i might consider it. nOW, If ECM did a subscription I'd find that hard to ignore
  24. Yep, that's the Him I hear in my head edit to add: now listening to the album and it's standing up well, Thankfully not too much Dub (which I feel never convinces outside it's natural home, where it convinces completely). Sounds a bit like an expanded precursor to Chicago Underground Duo when RM's playing. Not post-rock in the slightest but fun nonetheless. Maybe for Big Beat's benefit I could create the sub-genre of post-Dub non-post rock
