  1. This is one of those play-along instructional records from the 50's . Music Minus One is still around ; here is the link to the CD version of the above record . As to Chapin , well , he's known more as an educator than as a performer , though he played drums in several big bands in the 40's . He'd be in his mid-80's today . His son was singer-songwriter Harry Chapin . Lots of info at his website . Interestingly , Chapin did lead a date for Prestige in 1955 . The Jim Chapin Sextet featured Phil Woods and Billy Byers . This was reissued in 1977 on Classic Editions with the addition of 4 tunes . Here is the cover of the very rare Prestige 10" :

  3. Surely to avoid irony this needs to be followed by a smiley of some sort ? Perhaps one of these : Ars gratia artis.....
  4. The RETROSPECTION CD has neither Heide or All Tones from BRAINS ON FIRE VOLUME 1 . However , it does have the third track from that album , namely , The Fugue # 2 . The CD has two of the three tracks from BRAINS ON FIRE VOLUME 2 , namely , Love in the Middle of the Air which is a Dee Dee Bridgewater feature , and Pointed . The CD does not have the third track from BRAINS ON FIRE VOLUME 2 which is T.C.S. . Several sources ( including Lord ) list Tyrone as playing tenor and flute on T.C.S. . Since Love in the Middle of the Air is approximately sixteen minutes in length , and Pointed is around six minutes , I assume T.C.S. is a fairly lengthy track . While Love... and Pointed were recorded in 1973 , T.C.S. dates from 1971 . I'm hoping that somebody on this board has BRAINS ON FIRE VOLUME 2 and can verify that Tyrone does indeed play on T.C.S. . Those curious about this music can get a taste at this page , which has a complete .ram version of Pointed ( scroll down the page to Heiner Stadler ) . Stadler's playing has a whiff of 50's Cecil perhaps , but there is nothing here to frighten the horses . Since Tyrone's recorded legacy is so scant it would be a pity if the three tracks noted above remain orphaned in the digital age . Here are the original Lp covers of this music : And here is an alternate issue of Volume 1 put out by the Musical Heritage Society : Edit to replace broken image links
  5. According to Noal Cohen's Charles discography , not only the TCB reissue , but the Collectables and Lonehill CDs contain edited versions of some tracks . Apparently the only complete and unedited CD issue of this session is on a limited-edtion ( 2000 copies ) Italian CD called , ' Booker Little & Teddy Charles Group Live -The Complete Concert ' ( Jazz View 032 1991 ) The Fresh Sounds CD has the unedited tracks but does not have Stardust . The Fresh Sounds vinyl reissue presumably also has the unedited tracks and does contain Stardust as well . Part II of the Take Three Parts Jazz medley is called " Byriste " on the Jazz View CD , but this may be a typo , since other interations of this have it as " Lyriste " .
  6. O.K. most people who bought this bought it for the cover , but where else are you gonna hear a two-harp workout on I Got Rhythm ?
  7. Thanks for the link ; some incredible videos on that site

    Albert Stinson

Earlier Oblique Thread Whenever I think of Albert Stinson I remember Bobby Hutcherson's beautiful tone poem Now, dedicated to his departed friend . I would like to know the lyrics the choir sings on that track , but can only make out a few of them. Have these appeared anywhere or does anybody have better ears ?
  10. Let's see if I can be helpful this time : Toot Sweet Japanese CD (Engrish fans note cover photo credit : " Burt Goldbratt " ) Not really 'Japanese exclusive' since this was out on Rhino in the U.S. in 1999 under a different title :
  11. Uh... I hope this video didn't come from www.meetaudrey.com , 'cause if so , FozzyRox be spammin'....

    Walt Dickerson

This will be very welcome news to many here , so I thought I would revive this thread to give it greater visibility . Fresh Sounds is using this late 60's reissue cover for their new digipack : in place of the two original covers: As an added bonus , with this new release we now have , I believe , all of Austin Crowe's jazz output available Here is the link to the Fresh Sounds blurb Many of you will be familiar with the interview that board member Dmitry did with Walt in October 2001 . It's no longer archived at webzine One Final Note where it first appeared , but here is a link to it :Walt Dickerson Interview It's really a must-read .
  13. These are the ones I have and can recommend to any piano jazz fan : One that I haven't heard but would buy on sight , is her first date , a ten-incher for Norgran with David Stone Martin cover art : I second Paul Secor's recommendation for this record : One that I have long been curious about is this live 1968 date : I know the sound is supposed to be dodgy , but with Kenny Dorham on it I have to hear this . Does anybody here have this ?? Edit to replace broken image links
  14. One of our members has put personnel and track listings to some of the Mainstream titles: Partial Mainstream Discography As a piano trio aficionado I am curious about the Stan Hope and Reggie Moore sides . I used to see these all the time in the used bins . Stylistically where do these players fit? Are these records or ?
  15. Evidently Seriously though , the Weston is worth getting excited about . Not surprisingly , this set has elicited quite a lot of discussion on this forum : Randy Weston Mosaic Select Discussion 2003 Part 1 Randy Weston Mosaic Select Discussion 2003 Part 2 Randy Weston Mosaic Select Discussion 2005 For me the highlights are the previously unissued Roulette quartet side , and the Jubilee trio side which I have loved for many years . All the original lp covers are pictured in the booklet except the Jubliee , so here it is for those who care about such things :
  16. My favorite live Mclean is this one : It's run close by it's companion from the same concert , Tune Up . Jackie just tears it up ; great music .
  17. Guy , if you look closely at the scan of the cover with Legrand in the streets of Paris that I posted , you will see it is a Phillips issue which is why I asked which is the original Phillips cover .
  18. Chuck , from one ' anonymous ' member to another , thanks . Jeez you were probably one of the tiny number of people who read my attempt to start a Freddie Gambrell thread !
  19. I just wanted to give a heads up to those who might be yet to acquire this wonderful session . The Universal France Heritage CD re-issue from 2003 has an inferior booklet in that only 3 of the 9 session photos that were in the booklet from the 1986 German CD have been reproduced . In addition , the track listing on the 2003 re-issue is completely inconsistent with the programming on the CD . The 2003 CD programming is identical to the 1986 CD , yet the back of the 2003 digipack has another track order . I don't think the sound on the 2003 re-issue is all that much better than the 1986 re-issue despite the remaster . Here are the CDs in question : Universal France 2003 re-issue --- German 1986 re-issue --- The Japanese re-issue Daniel referenced above , has yet a third cover --- Yet another cover (used by Phillips and Columbia ) --- ( Is this the first-issue Phillips cover ? ) Daniel's original question went unanswered : Edit to replace broken image link
  20. I believe the smaller labels sometimes used polystyrene instead of polyvinyl chloride . Polystyrene required injection molding rather than compression molding , which meant labels had to be glued on instead of being integrated into the record . Polystyrene is prone to more surface noise than is vinyl, though pressings made from recycled or re-used vinyl also suffer from surface noise . Transition and Debut and other small labels issued lps on polystyrene .
  21. The Charlie Rouse-Julius Watkins material from the Jazzville Vol. 1 Lp is not included in the 2-CD compilation . It is included on this other Dawn CD : The Gene Roland-Paul Quinichette material from the Jazzville Vol. 4 Lp is included on this CD : Here are the 4 Lp covers from the Jazzville series : Edit to replace broken image link
  22. I'd love to not ignore Infinity, but as far as I know, it's only available as an expensive import. Maybe it too will be a Conn or RVG, sooner or later?? Infinity was available as a Connoisseur in 1998 . It does make an excellent companion to Jackie Mclean's Consequence as well . The 1990 CD of Tom Cat has the cover from the Japanese lp reissue I believe . Does the new RVG have any photos from the session ? I'm curious to know how the new Tom Cat compares sonically to the first CD issue .
