  1. Tom , I was going to ask about this myself . A recent viewing of Mary Lou at Montreux had me trying to remember what it was I saw on PBS all those years ago . I seem to recall that they showed Mary Lou with her students at Duke , so that would put it between '77-'81 . Somebody here will know more I'm sure .
  2. John , Dan and Chris thanks for your posts . I will give Photobucket a try . It has greater storage and bandwith allowances than PictureVillage . Scott , congratulations . Now all you need to learn is how to ' color within the lines '
  3. It has recently come to my attention that my image-hosting service has , on occasion , been serving up ads in place of my images . The host server does not however , serve the ads to my IP address , which is pretty insidious . So , I am looking for a new host . Can anyone here recommend a free or low-cost image-host that does not watermark or affix ads to images , and whose servers have very little down-time ? Obviously , all hosted images must be hot-linkable . With a free service I expect pop-ups and banner ads on the upload page , but I do not want to serve ads to anyone else .
  4. Chuck I'm not sure what you're talking about . Did the image-hosting service I use put an ad in place of my image ? I'm not seeing any ads . If this is the case I will use another service . Why so quick to question my veracity ??
  5. I concur . Instrumentally , White is dull . Another example of a guy who was not his own man , who was not playing himself . White took Prez and Getz and added.........nothing . Nat Hentoff's 2 1/2 star review of the Liberty side was partly based on this same criticism , however Nat went on to say , " His decision to vocalize is extremely ill-advised for just about every reason in the book " . This strikes me as unfairly censorious . Whether one appreciates White's pixilated singing or not ( and those who dig Dorough , Allison or Frishberg might ) , whatever originality White possessed was in this aspect of his musical personality . The decision to experiment is never ill-advised regardless of what we think of the results . EDIT: Fixed broken image links .
  6. The Mosaic timings ( 3:41 & 4:40 respectively ) are different , but the online Bobby Jaspar and Tommy Flanagan discographies don't list these alternate takes ; has anyone on this board done an A/B ear-test ??

    Dizzy Gillespie

Damn straight! Paul Jeffrey! Check out Paul Jeffrey soloing in front of Dizzy's Reunion Big Band : http://youtube.com/watch?v=26ZCILxBnhY Here's some earlier discussion on the board about Paul Jeffrey's Savoy date : http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...ic=1574&hl= And here is the cover of that Savoy record : Last available as a Japanese mini-LP CD in 2001 . No Gillespie lover or big band lover should be without the Gillespie Reunion Big Band record . It really should have come out in that first batch of MPS CDs a few years ago . EDIT: Fixed broken image link .
  8. If you could search phrases , you would have found this thread on searching phrases ! So , the answer is no . Don't know why this hasn't been fixed ; a lot of thread redundancy such as this could be avoided .
  9. The Wynton Kelly Trio ( Trane heard briefly ) . Wynton Kelly = Effortless swing + pure joy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBwrv6RtvtA

  11. In addition to the two Steve White sessions left off the Fresh Sound boxset ( available on OJC 1889 & 1891 ) there is the music that was slated for Nocturne # 11 which , while not part of the boxset , did come out on this Fresh Sound vinyl : Four tracks by vocalist Peggy Connelly backed by the Marty Paich orchestra , and four tracks by vocalist Tommy Traynor . Peggy had one album under her name for Bethlehem backed by the Russ Garcia orchestra . I am curious if the 84-page booklet in the boxset details the discographical nexus between Nocturne and Liberty . The unreliable Lord discography yields the following : the Jimmy Rowles trio date recorded for Nocturne came out originally on Liberty 3003 ( now available as part of a Mosaic Select ). The Herbie Harper Quintet that came out on Liberty 6003 reissued all of Nocturne #1 but only some of the material from Harper's Nocturne # 7 ( and had a track that was on neither ) . The Bob Enevoldsen material from Liberty 6008 was not a reissue of Nocturne # 6 . The Virgil Gonsalves on Liberty 6010 is also not a reissue of his material on Nocturne # 8 . The Steve White date issued on Liberty 6006 is not a reissue of any of his Nocturne material slated for Nocturne # 9 . The Conley Graves music from Nocturne # 4 was reissued , minus two tunes , on Liberty 6008 . The Earl Hines music from Nocturne # 5 saw reissue on Tops 1599 . The Liberty label listing has a Various Artists album called " Jazz in Hollywood " that came out on Liberty 6001 that presumably reissued Nocturne material , but I don't know what sessions it reissued . Harry Babasin's son Von is still seeking support for his efforts to preserve 500 hours of master tapes of West Coast jazz . >> www.jazzinhollywood.com<< EDIT: Fixed broken image link .
  12. In looking over the liner notes to Inverted Image , I see that his fragility is the result of a childhood bone disease that has made his bones susceptible to breakage . He went blind at age nineteen . By way of confirming Larry's impression that his playing on this Jazzland record wasn't representative of what he could do live , Anderson is quoted in the notes as saying that he was nervous , and not particularly satisfied with the results of his playing at the first session in June 1961 . A second session was held in November 1961 , which yielded five of the eight tracks on the album , the other three representing the best of the June session . No chance Concord will reissue this record , but perhaps Water or Mosaic will license it . I would like to hear his first recording , done in 1960 for Veejay , which I believe wasn't issued until many years later in Japan . Would anyone who has it like to share their impressions ? Here is the cover : EDIT: Fixed broken image link .
  13. No single-disc version has it all ? Not true . The 2001 Japanese CD of Inner Space has all eight tracks and sonically is the best this music has ever sounded ! Everybody who loves this album should do what I did and get this Japanese CD . Upon its issue , Downbeat gave Tones for Joan's Bones 4 1/2 stars . For me this is a five star record ; this is one of the finest jazz records of the late-Sixties . John , you're on a roll ; The Tentet and now this , bravo .
  14. The AOTW for November 27-December 3 2005 is incorrectly listed as Johnny Griffin Way Out which was AOTW for November 30-December 6 2003 . The AOTW for November 27-December 3 2005 was this one .

  16. What have we here ? a) A none too attractive chippie made even less toothsome by a severe case of cyanosis ? b) a heretofore unknown Hindu goddess ? c) a proto-smurfette ? d) art design by the colorblind ? Should have been titled , " I've Got Blue Under My Skin ".... EDIT: Fixed broken image link .
  17. One obvious choice :
  18. The Day After It's on Howard McGhee's Sharp Edge date .
  19. Allan did you listen to the samples ? What I heard sounded like slick , over-produced smooooth jazz
  20. Melvin was in Belgium last night at the Blue Note Records Festival in Ghent as you can read about here. On his website you can listen to sound samples from his albums , as well as read his biographical particulars . Apparently he has been asked by Larry Young III to play the Larry Young Festival in Newark alongside Herbert Morgan .

    Johnny Lytle

All of Johnny's Riverside/Jazzland dates are on CD except his first record Blue Vibes , though one track from it did come out on a British compilation CD . His two Pacific Jazz sides have not been re-issued as yet , and I don't think any of the Solid State material has either . The short tracks and pop material of the Solid States has me thinking these are pretty commercial affairs ; the fact that one of them is entitled , Close Enough For Jazz only bolsters my suspicions . And what did ever happen to organist Milt Harris ? For you rare cover fans here is the cover of Blue Vibes : One last thing . Most Lytle surnames are pronounced ' Little ' , but I once heard a jazz dj pronounce it , ' Lie-Tell ' . If anyone knows how Johnny was adressed , please do-tell . EDIT: Fixed dead image link .
  23. The particular aggregation of musicians that came together in January 1956 to record the Atlantic record was not heard in live performance during 1956 . In the spring the Tentet played at the City College of New York and were photographed there for the cover of the November 1956 Metronome . Hal Stein took over the tenor duties from J. R. Monterose , with Addison Farmer in place of Teddy Kotick and Al Dreares taking Joe Harris' drum chair . Back Row L-R : Addison Farmer , Mal Waldron and Al Dreares Front Row L-R : Gigi Gryce , Jimmy Raney , Don Butterfield , George Barrow , Hal Stein , Teddy Charles and Art Farmer Fifty years ago this week ( July 7th 1956 ) another iteration of the Tentet performed at the Newport Jazz Festival . Personnel changes included : Jon Eardley on trumpet instead of Art Farmer , Barry Galbraith on guitar instead of Jimmy Raney , Hall Overton on piano instead of Mal Waldron and Ed Shaughnessy on drums instead of Joe Harris/Al Dreares . Sources : Top Photo --- Metronome September 1956 , page 19 . Bottom Photo --- Metronome Yearbook 1957 , page 8 . The bottom photo shows David Broekman conducting the premiere of Teddy Charles' composition Word From Bird , which was recorded for Atlantic three months later . Favorable reviews of the concert appeared in both Metronome and Downbeat . The concert was taped by Voice of America , and the tape now resides in the the Library of Congress . Perhaps someone here ( Bertrand ? ) could listen to the tape and share their impressions . EDIT: Fixed dead image links .
  24. " Complex technical details of each composition could be given , but anybody understanding the jargon wouldn't need it . " ---Teddy Charles , The Tentet liner notes Teddy Charles' chef d'oeuvre . A landmark of 50's Avant-Garde/Third Stream/ 'Egghead' jazz . From the opening martial snare drum and portentous theme statement of Vibrations , to the frenetic , woven rhythmic figures of Lydian M-1 , an album brimming with inventive writing , utterly organic ensemble playing and swinging improvisations . The seamless blend of composition and improvisation made all the more impressive by the demands placed on the musicians by the melodic complexity and harmonic novelty of much of the writing . One of many high points : The harmonic transmutation of Nature Boy into something even more languidly romantic than Charles' earlier arrangement for Miles . The background scoring behind the soloists adds a dreamy poignancy to their statements . Raney is magnificent throughout . In re-reading Downbeat's five-star review I was struck by Jack Tracy's opening lines , " This is one that grows on you . There is so much to hear in the writing , so much going on in the group , so many solo moments of merit that come out at you in short bursts , and so much intensity in the entire performance , that a lot of listenings are just about mandatory . " I owned the lp for many years before finally connecting with this music . Obviously not a record for the untempered jazz neophyte, its subtlety and dare I say it , gravitas , requires a degree of jazz seasoning , which in my case , came through such musical alchemists as Melle , Russell and 'jazzical' Mingus . The quality of this music makes it all the more regrettable that an unissued track , a Teddy Charles original entitled , Majors , was likely lost in the Atlantic warehouse fire .
  25. Yes Larry you are , but who here hasn't ? Earlier Jammin the Blues link here This link will take you to our 17-page YouTube thread where you can post your discoveries Edit to add : Larry , like many of us I suspect , is having trouble with the new search feature which desperately needs the phrase-search functionality of the old system .
