    Harold Land

Yeah, the performance on that Enja disc is killer...same group except Hal Galper replaces Stanley Cowell. And yes, there are a number of phenomenal performances of the group from Europe in 1969 and 1970. Most have Cowell, a couple have Galper on piano. The Enja Lp : And the Enja CD : The Land-Hutcherson track on the Enja disc is an 18 minute version of , " The Creators " from the June 1970 Ljubljana Festival , where the Land Quintet also performed an original of his entitled," Mana Mercury " which appeared on this Yugoslavian LP : I don't know whether this track ever made it to CD . I have wondered if there is more material from that concert . Anybody know ? Edit to replace broken image links
  2. Does anyone have a discography for the Roost subsidiary Legende ? I know of only one title : Johnny Richards ---Annotations of the Muses Legende LP-1401 ( 10") 1955 . In June 1955 Birdland owner Morris Levy bought a 50% interest in Roost Records . The terms of the deal called for the name of the label to be changed to " Birdland Records " . In August of 1955 an ad in Metronome announced , " Birdland Records , formerly known as Roost , presents Johnny Smith Plays Jimmy Van Heusen on Birdland LP 2201 " ( the same catalog number as the Roost issue ) . The address given was the same Tenth Avenue one used by Roost . Now , Morris Levy was involved with Roulette Records from its inception in 1957 , and he did buy the Roost catalog in 1958 , and was responsible for the ' Birdland Series ' on Roulette , but to my knowledge there were no Birdland records released between 1955 and 1957 ; to borrow Roost's slogan of the time , Birdland records were , " music of the future "...literally . Given what is known about Morris " Godfather " Levy , one wonders whether Birdland Records was simply a vehicle for tax-fraud or money-laundering . After all , Levy , who at one time ran Topsy's Chicken Roost , The Cock Lounge and Birdland , only avoided becoming a jailbird by leaving the country ( flying the coop ) and dying ! Does anyone have more information about Birdland Records ? Finally , and tangentially , does anyone know the history of the Birdland nightclub that Levy and his " partners " , opened in Miami Beach in 1954 ?

    Freddie Gambrell

Thanks for posting Flat5 . Apparently the orchestra was a vehicle for Gambrell to showcase both his composing and arranging skills , as well as his work on several of the instruments he played . Do you remember any of the regulars , or players who passed through the band ? I am familiar only with Gambrell's early piano work . Interesting player both rhythmically and harmonically . Good dynamic sense and very good time ; the kind of player who I imagine had little difficulty negotiating a solo recital . To get a sense of all this listen to the bravura performance of Yesterdays from his second World Pacific side . If we think of Tatum as sui generis then the Gambrells , Petersons and Newborns of the world are each in their own way , epigones , and yet this in no way diminishes our esteem or enjoyment , because what really matters is that the musician swings . Gambrell swung .
  4. One album where A Child is Born fits the vibe of the record perfectly is Quintessence by Bill Evans : Great music for a Sunday morning in bed . While Philly Joe was certainly great at booting a band when necessary , he really shows his range here , with sensitive brushwork throughout . Oh , and you get Harold Land , Kenny Burrell and Ray Brown too .
  5. As Tony himself said , ' Some Hip Drum Shit ' : Tony Williams drum solo with the Getz/Corea band Tony Williams Lifetime with Larry Young , Ted Dunbar et al. *Please note , these videos are very low resolution , so go to the bottom right of the frame and toggle to the smallest screen size .
  6. This is one of those play-along instructional records from the 50's . Music Minus One is still around ; here is the link to the CD version of the above record . As to Chapin , well , he's known more as an educator than as a performer , though he played drums in several big bands in the 40's . He'd be in his mid-80's today . His son was singer-songwriter Harry Chapin . Lots of info at his website . Interestingly , Chapin did lead a date for Prestige in 1955 . The Jim Chapin Sextet featured Phil Woods and Billy Byers . This was reissued in 1977 on Classic Editions with the addition of 4 tunes . Here is the cover of the very rare Prestige 10" :

  8. Surely to avoid irony this needs to be followed by a smiley of some sort ? Perhaps one of these : Ars gratia artis.....
  9. The RETROSPECTION CD has neither Heide or All Tones from BRAINS ON FIRE VOLUME 1 . However , it does have the third track from that album , namely , The Fugue # 2 . The CD has two of the three tracks from BRAINS ON FIRE VOLUME 2 , namely , Love in the Middle of the Air which is a Dee Dee Bridgewater feature , and Pointed . The CD does not have the third track from BRAINS ON FIRE VOLUME 2 which is T.C.S. . Several sources ( including Lord ) list Tyrone as playing tenor and flute on T.C.S. . Since Love in the Middle of the Air is approximately sixteen minutes in length , and Pointed is around six minutes , I assume T.C.S. is a fairly lengthy track . While Love... and Pointed were recorded in 1973 , T.C.S. dates from 1971 . I'm hoping that somebody on this board has BRAINS ON FIRE VOLUME 2 and can verify that Tyrone does indeed play on T.C.S. . Those curious about this music can get a taste at this page , which has a complete .ram version of Pointed ( scroll down the page to Heiner Stadler ) . Stadler's playing has a whiff of 50's Cecil perhaps , but there is nothing here to frighten the horses . Since Tyrone's recorded legacy is so scant it would be a pity if the three tracks noted above remain orphaned in the digital age . Here are the original Lp covers of this music : And here is an alternate issue of Volume 1 put out by the Musical Heritage Society : Edit to replace broken image links
  10. According to Noal Cohen's Charles discography , not only the TCB reissue , but the Collectables and Lonehill CDs contain edited versions of some tracks . Apparently the only complete and unedited CD issue of this session is on a limited-edtion ( 2000 copies ) Italian CD called , ' Booker Little & Teddy Charles Group Live -The Complete Concert ' ( Jazz View 032 1991 ) The Fresh Sounds CD has the unedited tracks but does not have Stardust . The Fresh Sounds vinyl reissue presumably also has the unedited tracks and does contain Stardust as well . Part II of the Take Three Parts Jazz medley is called " Byriste " on the Jazz View CD , but this may be a typo , since other interations of this have it as " Lyriste " .

  12. O.K. most people who bought this bought it for the cover , but where else are you gonna hear a two-harp workout on I Got Rhythm ?

    Albert Stinson

Earlier Oblique Thread Whenever I think of Albert Stinson I remember Bobby Hutcherson's beautiful tone poem Now, dedicated to his departed friend . I would like to know the lyrics the choir sings on that track , but can only make out a few of them. Have these appeared anywhere or does anybody have better ears ?
  16. Let's see if I can be helpful this time : Toot Sweet Japanese CD (Engrish fans note cover photo credit : " Burt Goldbratt " ) Not really 'Japanese exclusive' since this was out on Rhino in the U.S. in 1999 under a different title :

    Walt Dickerson

This will be very welcome news to many here , so I thought I would revive this thread to give it greater visibility . Fresh Sounds is using this late 60's reissue cover for their new digipack : in place of the two original covers: As an added bonus , with this new release we now have , I believe , all of Austin Crowe's jazz output available Here is the link to the Fresh Sounds blurb Many of you will be familiar with the interview that board member Dmitry did with Walt in October 2001 . It's no longer archived at webzine One Final Note where it first appeared , but here is a link to it :Walt Dickerson Interview It's really a must-read .
  21. These are the ones I have and can recommend to any piano jazz fan : One that I haven't heard but would buy on sight , is her first date , a ten-incher for Norgran with David Stone Martin cover art : I second Paul Secor's recommendation for this record : One that I have long been curious about is this live 1968 date : I know the sound is supposed to be dodgy , but with Kenny Dorham on it I have to hear this . Does anybody here have this ?? Edit to replace broken image links
  22. One of our members has put personnel and track listings to some of the Mainstream titles: Partial Mainstream Discography As a piano trio aficionado I am curious about the Stan Hope and Reggie Moore sides . I used to see these all the time in the used bins . Stylistically where do these players fit? Are these records or ?
  23. Evidently Seriously though , the Weston is worth getting excited about . Not surprisingly , this set has elicited quite a lot of discussion on this forum : Randy Weston Mosaic Select Discussion 2003 Part 1 Randy Weston Mosaic Select Discussion 2003 Part 2 Randy Weston Mosaic Select Discussion 2005 For me the highlights are the previously unissued Roulette quartet side , and the Jubilee trio side which I have loved for many years . All the original lp covers are pictured in the booklet except the Jubliee , so here it is for those who care about such things :
  24. My favorite live Mclean is this one : It's run close by it's companion from the same concert , Tune Up . Jackie just tears it up ; great music .
