  8. Hi All, I'm a member of the forum from several years ago; it's been a very long time, I hope my shameless reappearance to hawk these Mosaic sets doesn't ruffle any feathers. To keep it short, I've decided to begin selling off some significant chunks of my jazz collection. Rather than go the eBay route, I'm hoping that at least some of it can find good homes with members here. I'm starting with several Mosaic CD sets....the list is below. All are in NM or EX+ condition with no spine tears, booklet wrinkles, etc. I'll pay USPS in CONUS, reasonable offers also considered. I've sold to others on the board in the "old days", and can provide references if desired. Please PM me with any questions or wish list items. If anyone has any issue with my posting this as a non-active member please let me know and I'll remove the post immediately. Thanks for looking. 9. Last night at the Jazz Standard: Oliver Lake Geri Allen Reggie Workman Andrew Cyrille Great stuff.
  10. I loved the Super Elys (the purple one) when I ran it on my P3. I was worried about stylus wear so I bought a new Elys 2 as the Super was discontinued. The Rega rep I e-mailed swore it would sound the same as the Super, and would be a better tracker (my one complaint about the Super). I found the harshness of the Elys 2 to be unbearable. I had the same question about break-in time but decided I don't have the patience to wait. I still find it a little odd that the carts would be that much different, but after much tweaking of the setup I just couldn't get it to be tolerable in my system. I've since purchased a Shure VX15VxMR and find it to be pure heaven with the vintage phono stage in my trusty old Marantz 7. Try a Dynavector 10x5. I used one on the P3 for a while and it was a great match until I switched to the vintage preamp, which doesn't seem to like MC carts.
  11. When you switch from a MM to a MC that is what you got: better sound. That's a good rule of thumb, but YMMV greatly depending on your phono preamp. Matching to your phono pre should be an important consideration when selecting a cartridge.
  12. I am also a tube nut. About a year ago I replaced the output tubes on my trusty McIntosh MC75's with NOS GE 6550A's. It was a big improvement over the Svetlana "Winged-C"s that I put in when the amps were refurbished. My preamp is a vintage Marantz 7, with what I believe are the original Telefunken 12AX7's. The day one goes I will cry. Guitar amp is a Mesa Boogie Mark III, running some generic Russian 6L6's. I've never spent a ton of time trying different tubes in the Boogie, it just seems to sounds great no matter. The few times I've bought tubes I've had great luck with Richard at Leeds Radio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It's tough to get him on the phone, but he answers e-mail promptly, and his warehouse is a trip. Boxes and boxes and boxes of tubes of any variety, and just about any other vintage part you can think of. Reasonable prices also......Leeds Radio.
  13. This is the way to go IMO. Rip the CD's to a hard drive (or two) in FLAC format using good ripping software (like EAC), tag them as you go using a good tagging program (like MP3 Tag), and get a playback device with a decent user interface (like a Squeezebox). If you go the extra step and buy an external DAC for around $1500-$2000, you will have a higher fidelity, more reliable digital front end than CD players costing $5K or more. Back the files up periodically to a second hard drive, put the CD booklets in Case Logic CD wallets on the shelf, and put the CD's with their cases in the storage closet. That's what I did, and the better sound, freed up space in my apartment, and not having to hunt around on the shelves for a particular CD is fantastic.
  14. My collection of 900+ CD's now lives as FLAC files on two 250GB Western Digital My Book Pro Edition drives. These are backed up to a single 750GB Seagate. I highly recommend the WD's. Near silent and run very cool. Solid as a rock so far.....
  15. Nothing like having to move the belt position on my turntable, get up after every one or two tunes to flip sides or change records, and part with $50 a pop for music that I've already purchased at least twice.
  16. All are single-layer stereo (except the Hill & Holiday which are multichannel + stereo) SACD in excellent condition. Please PM if interested. $3 shipping (any qty) to CONUS. PayPal only please. $12 Dave Brubeck - Time Out Billie Holiday - Lady In Satin Muddy Waters - Folk Singer Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow Ella Fitzgerald And Louis Armstrong Duke Elligton Meets Count Baise Miles - Sketches Of Spain Aaron Copland - Copland Conducts Copland Lauryn Hill - Unplugged 2.0 (2 discs) $20 Miles - Live-Evil (2 discs) Miles - Dark Magus (2 discs) ***SOLD*** $30 Miles - Someday My Prince Will Come (Japan) Miles - On The Corner (Japan) Archie Shepp - True Ballads (Japan) Thanks for looking!
  17. There were 140 Max Roach sets left on Thursday. Got IASW just in time - there were two left when I ordered!
  18. I would hold out for something with a spruce top. The maple laminate won't give you the warmth of spruce that, IMHO, is critical for a jazz box. One more piece of advice - NEVER spend that kind of dough on a guitar without playing it first.
  19. Haven't heard Paradigms in a while, but remember liking them when I did. It might stretch the budget a little, but I can give another big thumbs up to Dynaudio. Was VERY impressed when I listened to their bookshelfs a few months ago.
  20. Ted Curson - The New Thing & The Blue Thing. Atlantic mono, white label.
  21. The RVG of Herbie's Inventions & Dimensions has an alternate of Mimosa that was only previously available on the BN box. The RVG of The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol 2 has five cuts that I believe were previously unissued.
  22. Lately I've been using a Shunyata Hydra2 for power conditioning on my tube amps. All of the other components remain un-conditioned. The Hydra did make a big difference. There is definitely voltage fluctuation in my NYC apartment, but the only solution I could find for it was the overpriced and oversized Monster AVS-2000, so I pretty much decided not to worry about it. That TrippLite box looks like a great find. I'll definitely pick one up and give it a try, though I'll probably go for the 2400 watt version (LC-2400).
  23. That is why I like the modular aspect of this approach to CD playback. The Squeezebox decoding device is only $250. When hi-res files or other new file types become a reality, the decoder portion of the system can be replaced (if it can't be upgraded). As for the expense, most of the $$ are in the outboard DAC. I would choose Benchmark as I have heard it and like it, and it seems to offer great bang for the buck (IMO) in an outboard DAC. If you wanted to keep it low-cost, the Squeezebox itself has a built-in 24-bit Burr-Brown DAC, and claims a jitter spec of 50ps. Pretty damn good for a $250 device. I would bet that by itself it outperforms CD players costing MUCH more. The concerns I have are on the PC side. Reliability of the massive hard drive that would store the music has to be considered. Accurate ripping of the CD's, etc. Tom - there are units out there with integrated storage that connect right up to your stereo (check out the Olive and Cambridge Audio websites). They are expensive, and seem to struggle with additional storage, which would be critical as your collection grows. I plan to pick up the pieces to try it tomorrow. I'll report back after a little experimentation....
