  1. Back when I WAS gigging, I recorded many of them. I had a rule that I would only listen to the tape after two weeks. I found that was the only way I could listen objectively, as by then I would have gotten over any emotional high or low from the gig. I found it to be very beneficial. It was interesting how frequently gigs that I thought I had played poorly on actually sounded pretty good on the tape, and vice versa.

  4. Dmitry, I'll take it of it's still available. I'll send you a PM.
  5. This is the appeal (excerpted from the jazzmatazz site): — Seven Steps to Heaven includes previously unreleased alternate takes of "Joshua" and two of "Seven Steps" with Feldman and a rehearsal take of "Seven Steps" with Hancock. — Miles in Europe with the previously unissued tunes "Bye Bye Blackbird" (16'47) & "Theme" (6'06), plus the unedited versions of "Autumn Leaves" (13'55), "Joshua" (11'36) and "All of You" (16'54) — The complete Philharmonic Hall concert (12Feb1964), with both sets complete and in performance order — Miles in Tokyo (14Jul1964), with Sam Rivers on tenor sax — Miles in Berlin (25Sep1964), with Wayne Shorter on tenor sax; includes a previously unissued version of "Stella by Starlight" (12'54) — in all, set includes over an hour of previously unreleased music plus the fact that the Mosaic treatment of the Miles sets have been in extraordinary sound (the ones that I have heardany way) and gorgeous presentation. To me, this is one of the most exciting jazz releases of the year.
  6. "The Complete Guide to High-End Audio" by Robert Harley. ISBN 0-9640849-6-1. Excellent chapters on the basics of electricity in the context of audio, digital audio technologies, room acoustics, turntable setup, speaker placement, how tubes and transistors work, critical listening, etc. It really covers all the bases. Especially useful becuase it explains how all this stuff works without a lot of audiophile-speak, and offers ways to improve the sound of your system without spending mega-bucks. Before you make an upgrade to your system, read this book. HIGHLY recommended.
  7. I think a "Marketplace" type of thread would introduce even MORE spam, as it would give the spammers a "legal" place to post. After being invited here by the Marketplace thread the spammers are likely to pollute the rest of the board as well (as RDK mentioned). The Marissas of the world don't show up that often, and when they do they are dealt with accordingly...
  8. Classic Records is alive and well, and doing some great reissues of classic Blue Notes. Classic Records What specific title are you looking for?
  9. Thanks for the tips. There is a ton of interesting info on the Vansevers and PS Audio sites. Time to save those pennies, I suppose...
  10. Is anyone using a power conditioner on their system? I'm sure that my AC line is full of noise, but I don't want to spend $1000 cleaning it up. If there is something that would give me a noticeable improvement in the $200 range, I'd give it a shot. Any recomendations?
  11. Has this been confirmed? If it's true, I am one happy camper.
  12. Jackie McLean - Capuchin Swing - King pressing. Vinyl nirvana.
  13. I'm glad the new Beastie Boys is available on vinyl, because there is no way I will buy a CD that secretly installs an application on my PC. Though I heard if you spin the record backwards it says "Those who record this disc will suffer the wrath of almighty Satan..."
  14. Sent you a PM, skeith. Please e-mail me at czen@earthlink.net if you didn't receive it.
  15. Hal, You might want to consider keeping that one for yourself. It is an essential recording, quite accessible, and a fine introduction to two of the greatest artists that this music has produced (Miles Davis & John Coltrane). If you could select only a few discs from your father's collection as keepsakes, something to remember your father's passion with, this would definitely be one of them.
  16. FINALLY - The Complete Mercury Recordings of Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Spotted at Kim's (on Broadway near Columbia U) for $153. And I only went in there to buy my wife a Mother's Day present...
  17. Though I agree that the setup wolff describes (tube pre, SS amp), makes the most sense, my system is the other way around (McIntosh vintage tube amps, modern-day McIntosh SS pre), and I am pleased enough for now. At some point I will sell the preamp and replace it with a tube model. Going to tube amplifcation is BY FAR the most significant improvement I have made to my system. My recommendation is to go with a tube amp. Even with a SS pre, I think you will hear a big improvement. There are many great-sounding options available at (relatively) resonable prices. As wolff mentioned, the efficency rating of your speakers will be a big motivating factor in this decision.

#3 is my excuse. My cables aren't gold, though.
  19. Metal spine, paper spine, whatever. Skip the CD's altogether and buy the Mosaic LP sets. FAR superior to their CD counterparts in every way, and all still in print (except the Gil Evans).
  20. Thanks for the info, Chuck. You're absolutely right - a Fantasy Complete Konitz box would be a great thing. I would LOVE to hear that Yesterdays alternate.
  21. Chuck, Was the original 78 of Yesterdays (New Jazz 855) not the master take, but this alternate to which you're referring, or was the alternate of Yesterdays issued on a different 78? The obsessive completist in me needs to know.... Thanks. Edited to correct 78 catalog number
  22. Damn right it qualifies. And don't forget the six-stringers: Wes Montgomery/Melvin Rhyne Jim Hall/Bill Evans
