  1. Thanks. Any info on recording date?
  2. I'm all over this the day it's released. I (shamefully) have none of this material in my collection, despite being a huge fan of Tolliver's work with Jackie Mac and Andrew Hill.
  3. Does anyone have pertinent info on John Handy's "Quote Unquote", Roulette Birdland Series 52124? The liner notes on the LP jacket state Julian Euell - b, Edgar Bateman - d, Walter Bishop - p, and Don Friedman "featured on No Coast". There is a trumpet player prominent on the date with no credit. Any info much appreciated.....
  4. Digital master or not, I just picked up Walt Dickerson's "To My Queen" on OJC vinyl, and it sounds killer. Maybe the CD sounds this good, but I doubt it. For 10 bucks a pop on these you can't go wrong.
  5. When you put on that Dylan Greatest Hits Vol II, go straight to Side Four. The stuff with Happy Traum (I Shall Be Released, Down In The Flood, and You Ain't Goin' Nowhere) is some of my all time favorite Dylan.
  6. Lee Konitz & Martial Solal - Live At Berlin Jazz Days
  7. Eddie Gale - Black Rhythm Happening (4 Men With Beards reissue) Ornette - Live At Prince Street (Flying Dutchman) Jackie McLean - New & Old Gospel (BN Liberty original)
  8. Another for the Cohn. Been spinning this one a lot lately.
  9. The only one of these I have is the Dizzy Reece "Star Bright", and it is wonderful. I have a Classic reissue of "Lou Takes Off"', but it is stereo. That also sounds great, but sounds a little compressed and sterile to me compared to the Reece. Same thing with Kenny Drew's "Undercurrent". From the mono series I will be picking up the McLean and Hank's "Soul Station" ASAP.
  10. Frankly, neither do you. Aren't you the guy who said that Sonny Rollins only played "lame crap" or something like that a while back? My apologies if I have the wrong guy.
  11. Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra - A Portrait of Duke Ellington (Verve trumpet label DG)
  12. Mosaic Grant Green/Sonny Clark - 1st LP Lee Morgan - Search For The New Land - (NY address stereo) Horace Silver - Silver's Blue (Epic 180g reissue) Neil Young - On The Beach (side two)
  13. Warne Marsh/Red Mitchell - Hot House (Storyville)
  14. Horace Silver Quintet - Silver's Serenade (NY mono)
  15. E-mail sent re: Konitz/Solal, Marsh/Mitchell, and Newborn "Back Home".
  16. Horace Parlan - Little Esther (Soul Note) Lee Morgan - Cornbread (BN NY address mono) Lee Morgan - Search For The New Land (BN NY address stereo)
  17. 15/8 is an interesting work. It is a mini-documentary about the composition, rehearsal, and performance of the title piece at the Knitting Factory here in NYC. I met Ms. Hancock through my job about a year ago. She used Hill's music in one of her other films, and made 15/8 after that film's completion as kind of a snapshot of his compositional style. She debuted the film at one of the big jazz festivals (I can't remember which one) where it was warmly received, but she has been unable to find distribution for it.
  18. Thanks for the tips, all. I would have loved to catch the DeFrancesco gig, but since it starts in 10 minutes I doubt I'll make it. Time to finish up some work and walk over to Top of the Hub...
  19. In town for one night Thursday, hoping to catch some music. Any recommendations? I'm staying in Copley Square.
  20. Thanks, Rod & Tony, for the replies. Rod - sending you a PM.
  21. Disc four of my Complete Bill Evans on Verve box has a gouge, rendering it almost unplayable. Could someone help me out with a burn? I'd be happy to return the favor however I can.
  22. Howard Alden/Jack Lesberg "No Amps Allowed" on Chiaroscuro is a nice one. Edited to correct spelling of "Chiaroscuro" Still not sure I got it right!
  23. The 3/26 version of "One Down One Up" is absolutely killer (as Guy mentioned). The Half Note material is right up there with my favorite Coltrane. I have it on four individual CD's, but if I did the math correctly it looks like you could shuffle the sets around and squeeze it all onto two CD's. I hope Verve does the right thing and releases this material in its entirety.
  24. Love or hate Schaap, this is an important thread that shouldn't be derailed. WKCR has a LOT more going for it than Phil Schaap ramblings. Ben Young's commentary and interviews with people like Bobby Bradford are excellent, as are their Jazz Profiles segments where they play five hours of underappreciated artists like Scott LaFaro, day-long birthday broadcasts, memorial broadcasts, and the list goes on. It's the only station left in metro NYC that has any sense of adventure and creative thought in their programming. To lose it would be a HUGE loss. Chris, I agree with you - I think that Schaap ran out of things to say a long time ago, but surely you can see past that and agree that this is one of the last remaining outlets for the music, and it needs to be saved.
