  1. What about Tomatbluenote?
  2. I voted for Andrew Hill, for many of the same reasons already mentioned in this thread. Another musician I wish Lee would have had the opportunity to record more with is Billy Harper. I'm a big fan of Harper's compositional style, and it would have been interesting to hear Morgan's development in the more challenging environments that both Hill and Harper could have offered.
  3. I recently came into posession of a pair of McIntosh MC75's that I'm having restored, and I'm looking for a preamp to mate with them. I'd like to stay tube, and I need phono stage. Any ideas under $1000? I'll go used, if need be.
  4. Is there a website where I can get info and purchase Uptown releases?
  5. BIG thumbs up to the Starker. Many would disagree with me, but Starker's 1963 take on the Cello Suites is my personal favorite.
  6. I find playing "On Green Dolphin Street" at jam sessions EXTREMELY tedious. That whole alternating swing/latin thing is VERY tired, IMHO.
  7. Yesterday's haul from Downtown Music Gallery: LP - Denny Zeitlin/Charlie Haden - Time Remembers One Time Once (ECM) LP - Horace Parlan Quartet - Little Esther (Soul Note) LP - Bobby Bradford & John Stevens (Nessa), great sounding LP - nice work, Chuck! LP - Lee Konitz Quartet - Ideal Scene (Soul Note) CD - Cecil Taylor - Unit Structures (Blue Note) already have the mono LP, but the completist in me needed the alternate take All this for $41!
  8. Stefan, Please post your E-Bay moniker. I'm interested in those Alice Coltrane LP's. Thanks.
  9. The Koch CD that Hans mentions is essential. The other Lucinda in my collection is "World Without Tears", which is uneven, but the good moments are great. VERY intense, dark songwriting. Get the vinyl edition - it contains two bonus tracks not available on the CD.
  10. Voted for the Vanguard. It was a tough choice - each of those boxes is great for different reasons, but Eric Dolphy swung my vote to the VV. Though technically not a "box", the 4-CD "Live In Japan" (1966 w/Alice & Pharaoh) is one of my favorites, though it's not for everyone.

    Cleaning LPs

How important is this goo to your stylus? I've just been using a soft brush to give it a gentle wipe occasionally. To be honest, I'm a little freaked about about by cartridge coming in contact with goo. Is my paranoia doing my vinyl a disservice?

Spend $15 on an Audioquest carbon-fiber brush, and give the record a few spins with the brush before you play it. Picks up dust, and gives the LP a good de-staticing. An essential investment, IMHO.
  13. Eric, Invest the yen in the "Someday My Prince..." JSACD. Trane's solo on the title track will absolutely knock you out. I've heard that solo a thousand times, but the SACD reveals nuances in his phrasing that I had never before picked up.
  14. Has anyone confirmed that the new JRVG'S are the same remasters as the forthcoming US RVG's? I e-mailed Blue Note last week, but thus far no response (they're probably too busy getting that new bulletin board up and running...) .
