  1. By far the weak link in my system right now is the CD player. This coupled with the fact that my music collection is claiming more and more space in my small Manhattan apartment has caused me to think very seriously about this idea: Buy one of these: Slim Devices Squeezebox, which will accept streamed WAV or FLAC files from a PC or Mac, and connect it via optical cable to a Benchmark DAC-1 (or other high quality D-A converter) which outputs to the preamp. With this setup it looks like for around a $1000 investment I'd have a CD playback system rivaling the sound of players that cost $3-5K, and the CD's can be stored away in boxes Other than the reliability of the hard drive storing the music files (which I would backup), does anybody see a downside to this?
  2. Another Rega P3 owner here - with RB300 arm and Dynavector cart. A great setup for the money. The only downside is that the Rega runs a quarter-step sharp. Two big rubber bands (like the kind you find on broccoli) around the bearing wheel beneath the platter slows it down to just about perfect speed. My understanding is that most (if not all) Regas share this problem.
  3. In my experience, vintage gear represents the best value in audio available. Keep your eyes open, and you'll find treasures of far higher quality and far fewer $$$ than you will spend at any "audiophile" shop. My current setup: McIntosh MC75's (w/GE 6550A's) Marantz Model 7 (W/Telefunken 12AX7's) Rega P3 w/RB300 & Dynavector cart Sony DVP-NS500 for SACD/CD Mirage OM9
  4. I'm curious about the process of "folding down" to mono from stereo masters. Does anyone have details?
  5. Actually, DVD is just a storage device for MPEG2 files. These files do not become video (NTSC or otherwise) again until those files are decoded by the DVD player. Hardbop worded his question correctly - if he had asked to convert just "video" to DVD, he would have left open the question of which video standard he is referring to (NTSC, PAL, SECAM, etc.). Hardbop - PM me, I might be able to help.
  6. A guy who worked for me several years ago was named Lateef, named after Yusef. I must admit that was part of the reason I hired him. I've met several Miles. On a non-jazz note, how many Dylans do you know......?
  7. Up to see if DrJ ever fired up those MC-30's. Curious to hear what your results were Doc....
  8. I'm very much looking forward to this release. Concord has hit upon a great concept with these reissues, IMHO. Even though a lot of the stuff in this "series" has beeen reissued to death (Bill Evans Vanguard, Miles 1st Quintet), it's nice to see it released stateside with the K2 remastering and in performance order. I would love to see this treatment applied to the Eric Dolphy Five Spot material and the Jaki Byard Lennie's stuff.....
  9. Phil Schaap, in his liner notes to the 1999 Columbia/Legacy CD reissue of "Black, Brown, & Beige", claims that the originally issued title track of "Blues In Orbit" was master number 40626-1 recorded on 2/4/58, while most discographies list the originally issued take as 40626-6, recorded on 2/12/58. The 2004 Columbia/Legacy CD reissue of "Blues In Orbit" includes 40626-6 as the originally issued title track, contradictory to Schaap's statement. So who is correct? Can anyone verify if the original Blues In Orbit LP contains the same master take of the title tune as the 2004 Columbia/Legacy reissue? As an aside, the 2004 Blues In Orbit CD claims to include a "previously unissued" alternate of the title tune, though this take (40626-2) was included on the aforementioned "Black, Brown, & Beige" CD reissue.
  10. This is a must-own IMHO. The only downside is you might accidentally run across Gopnik's Bill Evans article....
  11. That's a very good question...and his notes from Paris are only a little easier to take than this drivel. Back to topic - I'll be picking this box up tomorrow. I too only have this material in the 12-CD Riverside box, and look forward to the sonic upgrade and improved presentation. I'm not sure if there's enough to fill 3-CD's, but I would LOVE to see a similar treatment given to the Eric Dolphy Five Spot material.
  12. Next up: Ben Webster - Soulville Then two months of Duke - Piano In The Foreground and Blues In Orbit
  13. The Complete Johnny Hodges Sessions 1951-1955 - Mosaic
  14. No thanks. the Oliver Nelson record I ordered from the list turned out to be a reissue. I figured since they wanted 50 bucks for it and listed it as New Jazz label it was an original. NOT!!! forget these jokers. unless you like paying thru the nose for everything. ← Yep. Only Acoustic Sounds would have the cahones to charge $15 bucks for records you couldn't give away at a yard sale. They're now charging betwen $30-$50 for Rolling Stones SACD's that just went OOP, when they are still readily available for $16 (or less) most places.
  15. No jazz left? That's OK - you still have an opportunity to buy fine selections like these - for only $15 each! Bryan Adams Cuts Like a Knife A&M Records - SP6-4919 (notch) Air Supply Lost in Love Arista Records -AB4268 You gotta love those Acoustic Sounds prices....
  16. LP cover of "Brother Jug" (7792) lists recording by RVG, supervision by Bob Porter.
  17. Art Blakey - A Jazz Message (Impulse mono) Kenny Dorham - Trompeta Toccata (BN Toshiba/EMI) Ornette Coleman - The Empty Foxhole (BN Conn "Wally")
  18. Actually meant "Millenium" by Felipe Fernandez-Armesto, author of "Civilizations". Basically a history of the last 1000 years in 800 pages. Looks fascinating.
  19. I'm a sucker for vintage audio gear, though the only pieces I currently own are a floor-standing Victrola and the McIntosh MC-75s at the heart of my stereo system. Sure, it's an absurd auction, but boy would I love to cherry-pick some of that stuff...
  20. Vintage Audio Collection for sale I wonder if he has a Silvertone! If I only had lots more time and lots more money. (No relation to the seller, etc... )
  21. Lon - have you read "Millennium"? It's been on my shelf for a while and I haven't been able to dig into it yet.
  22. This one even has "Tube Reverberation"! Silvertone on eBay
  23. The tunes listed suggest that they are releasing the 3/26/65 and 5/7/65 broadcasts. This equals only about 84 minutes of music - a little skimpy for two CDs. They could easily fit either of the other two nights onto a 2-CD set - hopefully there's more to the release than the article suggests. ALL of it would fit onto three CDs by shuffling the order of the performances a little. This is esential Trane, IMHO. It looks unlikely, but let's hope that Verve does the right thing...
  24. Thanks again, Chuck - much appreciated.
