  1. I use the Ikea Expedit that cool blue mentioned to start this thread (though mine is the darker chocalate brown color). I've got Mosaics and other boxes on the top row, LP's on the second, 78's and more LP's on the bottom, and for the others I made little shelves so I could put two tiers of CD's in each cube. It looks pretty good, and allows for easy reorganization of the collection, but stability is not its strong point. One good push from either side and this puppy is going down. My collection is outgrowing the unit, so I'll probably scrap it soon. I'll probably go the Dmitry route and spend a weekend building something ideal.
  2. Sonny Rollins - The Bridge (Classic 200g) Sonny Rollins - Brass/Trio (Verve black label - I don't know what distinguishes different Verve pressings - a topic for another thread I suppose) Lee Morgan - Cornbread (NY address mono) Bobby Jaspar (RLP 12-240, blue label, deep groove both sides) Spaghetti & Meatballs and a decent cabernet. 2005 is off to a good start.
  3. Thanks for the input everyone. I'll try the Audio Asylum, but I often have little patience for the discussions over there. I've always been skeptical of the advantages to be had from biwiring, but the speaker mfgr swears that there's a dramatic improvement. Who knows, maybe they're just heavily invested in copper futures. When I get some time I'll probably do an A/B comparison with some cheap cable, but right now I'm quite happy with the sound of my system so I'll just leave it alone.
  4. Does anybody here biwire their speakers? If so, can you speak to what improvements you hear over a single run of cable? I'm considering going this route on my new Mirage speakers, which are currently cabled with a single run of Audioquest Bedrock - a cable that I'm happy with and is reasonably priced, so I'd probably just get a second pair. Any thoughts?
  5. runsgood99 seems to be one of those buyers with an unlimited supply of funds for LPs. I have lost countless auctions to him (or her). Now that I think about it, I have lost several to 6550c as well...
  6. Straying off-topic here, but that Gottlieb pic and MANY more, are archived here: Library of Congress Gottlieb Archive One of my favorite sites on the web.
  7. I agree. What is the point of yet another CD issue of this material? 24 bit or not, most of this stuff has seen CD issue at least once, and those that haven't already will likely make their way to the US RVG series someday. Let's see some analog-master vinyl or (let the flames begin) SACD issues of this material.
  8. I didn't vote, because I don't really see the point of "who do you hate" type threads. I must say, however, that those Foxwoods commercials that John Pizzarelli does rank right up there with the most insipid and embarrasing moments in jazz.
  9. I too eagerly await the long-rumored "Archives" set. We may be waiting a long time, though. My understanding is that Neil and Joel Bernstein have been working on this project for years, but release is always stalled by Neil's rejection of the song selection or length. Given that every NY album for the last several years has been released on vinyl, I would imagine this one would be as well, if and when it does see the light of day.
  10. Hey Wolff, was that Dire Straits another Gold Masterdisk?
  11. Some old favorites today: AM: Ella at Duke's Place (thin vinyl, later pressing, but sounds great) Ella In Berlin (thick vinyl, probably first pressing) PM: Oliver Nelson - Blues & Abstract Truth (Impulse/ABC - rainbow label, but sounds incredible) Lee Morgan - Search for The New Land (NY address stereo) Jackie McLean - Let Freedom Ring (Toshiba/EMI - beginning not to like these EMI's, very cold sound to these ears. Killer session, though) Wynton Kelly - Piano Interpretations (Toshiba/EMI - to see if I felt the same way as above about the mastering - I did)

    Marion Brown

Marion is apparently in Florida, contact info can be found here: Margaret Davis's Website I am unsure of his current health status.
  13. After much deliberation, I took the plunge today. 29 left - not much time left on this one.
  14. Seven Steps Mosaic LP set should be coming in January.
  15. Just got the word from Mosaic that the Seven Steps LP set is due to be released in January. Looks like Christmas will come a litlle late this year...
  16. Every Bob Thiele session I could find in my collection (about 50 - up to 1966) was recorded by Rudy, except the Mingus sessions which were recorded by Bob Simpson. I wonder why Thiele and/or Mingus didn't want to use RVG for those...?
  17. Before you scrap it, you might want to call Ryan at Audio Classics in Vestal, NY for a repair estimate. Audio Classics They are a great bunch of people, and quite knowledgeable about all things vintage.
  18. I'm a Steely Dan nut. It doesn't get much better for guitar playing: Jeff Baxter, Elliott Randall, Larry Carlton, Dean Parks... I like the earlier stuff better; from Gaucho forward it gets a little too slick for me. Katy Lied is a desert island disc for me. It's all about bad sneakers and a pina colada my friend.
  19. Bill Evans Trio - "Israel". One of my all time favorites.
  20. It's tough to say which of Hubbard's BN's is my favorite, but I've gotta throw a little love to Hub-Tones. James Spaulding really shines, and I love the tricky blues line of "For Spee's Sake". It's especially hip when Hubbard quotes it in his solo. And Herbie plays so purty on "You're My Everything"...
  21. And that's not the only one... King Pressings Galore
  22. I had this experience last year with a NY address, mono copy of Lee Morgan's "Cornbread". Van Gelder in the wax, THICK vinyl, two bucks, quite dirty, cover in rough shape. Took it home, cleaned it up, and though it still has some surface noise, the superiority of its fidelity over its CD counterpart is astonishing. I have records that look FAR better than this, but don't play with nearly the same musicality (for lack of a better term) that this one does.
  23. You, of all people, should know the answer to that...
  24. I hear you, wolff. My 75's could easily heat a small bedroom. Thankfully, my living room is arranged in such a way that the heat is not too bothersome (though my wife may disagree...). Charles, sorry to hear about your amp. Were there any symptoms of the tubes failing befor the meltdown?
  25. David Wild posted on the Coltrane listserv a couple of weeks ago that there were legal issues being worked out with Impulses's release of the Half Note material, and that the release date has been pushed back. Hopefully these issues will be resolved soon, and Impulse will release this material IN ITS ENTIRETY. As Jim mentioned, it is incredible stuff; some of the most intense Trane I have ever heard.
