I'd love to see a box that brings together all of the material by this loose musical collective working around Kantner-Slick-Crosby at the time. I'm thinking totally remastered original and alternate takes, unreleased tracks, and so on. I guess the box would include Blows Against the Empire, If I Could Only Remember My Name, Sunfighter, Baron von Tollbooth & the Chrome Nun, Slick's Manhole...

Just picked up Kantner-Slick-Freiberg's Baron Von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun and David Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name on CD - haven't owned these since my long gone vinyl days, and haven't heard either in at least 15 years. But I enjoyed the remastered-expanded Blows Against the Empire disc so much that I decided to go for these, even in their un-remastered incarnations. I do hope they'll get the full reissue treatment soon, though.

yeah, just a glance through my "saved for later" list of Tzadic stuff shows the same pattern - over 15 minutes, the track is unavailable. But of course, tiny little :30 and 1:00 tracks still count as a full track download... This doesn't seem to be the case with other labels in my stash.

Less than a week ago, I ordered a couple of items via my yourmusic cart, and was charged no sales tax. That's been the case as long as I've been using the service. Today when i ordered an item via my cart, I was charged sales tax - the exhorbitant 9.25%, mind you, that combines my Tennessee state and county sales taxes. Anybody have insight into this recent change?

Sorry, frank - should've been clearer. I don't have a CD printer; I was seconding Jim's comments about the pitfalls of stick-on labels. I used to use them quite a bit, but found that after a year or two the labels began to come unglued, especially around the edges, making them treacherous to use in all kinds of players. Since then, I've stuck to good ol' low-tech CDR marker pens.

I'll fourth the Yoshi's sets - fantastic trio material, energetic and exciting. These would probably give you a good sense of what you'd hear live these days. I'd also recommend two early trio albums, Keys to the City (1985) and Work (1986), both of which were originally released on the Landmark label, but later offered as a two-fer on 32 Jazz under the title Chapters 1 & 2: Keys to the City / Work. But yeah, the Yoshi volumes are great, and what I'd go for first.

I've always lamented the "lost" Grateful Dead studio album that might have resulted in 1972 - following Skullfuck - with a judicious selection of tunes from Garcia's first solo album , Weir's Ace, and the new tunes they presented on Europe '72. Anyone wanna try a speculative game, naming the tunes and running order that might have resulted?

I own and warmly recommend the Guarneri cycle as well - it's recently been remastered in spectacular sound.

Excellent choice. Sahara is one of my favorite McCoy Tyner releases, along with Song for My Lady, from the same year, and also with Mouzon, Hill and Fortune. I'll be giving this a spin tomorrow, and over the next few days as well.

Spontoon, GD Live does seem to be having some problems; no one seems able to reach it over the past few days. Temporary, I hope.

Yeah, I have to agree because he looked way past 58 and we know that smoking does age you faster. I, a non smoker, was shocked to discover that I'm older (by 2 years) than he was. In any event, he was the consummate professional, quite credible in every role he took on. RIP. This is from his IMDB biography: "John had been an acknowledged alcoholic, who remained sober ever since getting therapy. He had quit smoking in 1999, which he described as 'hell on earth'." I guess the years of damage had taken their toll. I agree that he was a pro, probably even a workaholic, which may have also contributed to his demise. I'm glad to see we're all able to derive our little moral lessons from John Spencer's death. Because that's the point, after all.

Can anyone - perhaps orchiddoctor - explain the deal with two apparently different editions of Steppin' Out with the Grateful Dead: England '72? According to Amazon, there was a version released in 2002 on Arista that is now available only from used dealers, while a version released in 2004 on Grateful Dead/Wea is available new. Amazon also shows two different versions of the cover: 2002: 2004: I see no difference between the track lists, no noted differences in format (CD, SACD, etc.). Just curious...
