  1. Me too - I'd love to hear this. Kimbrough is one of may favorite players right now, and I dig what little Bley I've heard. obviously, I need to hear more of the latter.
  2. Well, I like it but I didn't vote. By the way, I found the function to control this and I can set the time limit. Right now it's set at 10 minutes. Would it be better to set it to 1 minute or just do away with it altogether? Jim, Can you explain some of the advantages you see in the feature? Like Jim R, I'm having a hard time finding the point. Maybe a failure of imagination on my part.
  3. Understood. I have no problem with it either - more like an anthropological curiosity. But this may be a little more complicated than it seems. Note a few things: 1. The Dead's trading policy has not changed, and probably won't. Folks can still trade concert recordings as much as they like, as long as no money changes hands in the process. The only change is that one web site, the Internet Archive - an independent, non-profit repository - has complied with a request from a conscientiously unnamed someone or something to remove their 1,000+ Grateful Dead soundboards from free public availability. 2. It may be that Grateful Dead Productions made the request. If so, why does the Archive not say so, and explain why the request was made in the context of the trading policy? It's all pretty mysterious. 3. My call wasn't really for interpretations of the general situation, which may turn out to be fairly obvious, but instead for interpretations of the cryptic language in the comment from brewster; again, Just intrigued by all the intrigue...
  4. I've been thinking about this, and something in there just doesn't sound quite right. I think it's this bit: "Based on discussions with many involved, the Internet Archive has been asked to change how the Grateful Dead concert recordings are being distributed on the Archive site for the time being. Who are the "many involved," exactly? And who has asked the Archive to make the change? A further statement from brewster, the "digital librarian and founder," only deepens the mystery: Attempts at interpretation are welcome.
  5. Was having trouble earlier today, seems better now.
  6. Now Playing... The Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack
  7. I may as well note that the last show I downloaded from the archive, two weeks ago, was 1973/03/24, Philadelphia. Very fine indeed...And there will be no more. Bad for me, but I can't blame the Dead. A quick perusal of the discussion boards at the archive reveals a depressing number of temper tantrums, flying accusations, primal screams, calls for boycott, cries of abandonment and betrayal, vicious damnations, vows of vengence...you'd think you were in Bedlam, or one of Dante's lower circles. Disappointing, sure. But really, does the situation warrant comments like this?
  8. I used to have a ton of cassettes (several bureau drawers full) that were recorded mainly in the early and mid 1980s. I threw them all away a few years ago. One listen revealed most of them to be... er, unlistenable: muffled, wobbly, distorted, awful woozy stuff. So I dumped them.
  9. I think the Bailey is beautiful. [i don't know what he would make of that description, mind you!] Who could argue with "beautiful"?
  10. Didn't go out today at all. Indeed, this "not going out on the Friday following Thanksgiving" is a family tradition - a rule, even, and a wise one at that. I do have some friends who always get up at 4 a.m. to be at the malls when the doors open. They claim it's some sort of anthropological field trip to watch all of the shopping freaks, but really -
  11. I can't beleive I didn't mention this outfit in my earlier post, but... Malachi Thompson and Africa Brass! Specifically, these three: Lift Every Voice (Delmark, 1992) Buddy Bolden's Rag (Delmark, 1995) Blue Jazz (Delmark, 2003) Aside from his work with smaller groups, Malachi Thompson, the great Chicago trumpeter, often leads Africa Brass - a band comprising five trumpets, four trombones, sax, clarinet, and rhythm section, plus vocalists and usually some guest players like Gary Bartz, Billy Harper, and Lester Bowie. This is innovative and adventurous music. All three of these albums are very highly recommended, but to choose just one, I say try out Blue Jazz and work backwards from there.
  12. Be sure to give us your picks, BFrank!
  13. Dave Holland Big Band - What Goes Around (ECM, 2002) and Overtime (Sunnyside, 2005) Joe Henderson - Big Band (Verve, 1996)
  14. Wow. I shouldn't be suprised that the Dead pulled the plug. I guess they were stunned by how quickly the Fillmore set sold out, and were reminded about the huge market they could be tapping. It was great while it lasted.
  15. The Clash - London Calling (Columbia/Legacy remaster).
  16. Interesting. My Blues in Orbit arrived a couple of days ago, the jewel case also a bit shattered - cracked, some loose, broken plastic pieces from the spine - though not nearly as badly as yours, and no damage to the mailer packaging. I haven't had another problem with damaged merchandise from yourmusic.
  17. Prediction: at $6 a disc, you will become addicted. I don't know about others, but the standard price for a used CD around these parts is $9, and there isn't much of a viable selection in jazz. Good stuff - hope it lasts.
  18. The forums page claims that it is currently 6th November 2005 - 12:28 AM, though by Eastern Standard Time it is 5th November 11:28, CST is 5th November 10:28, etc. Is there a problem with the site's clock? It seems to be affecting time stamps on posts...
  19. Ready for Freddie is supposed to ship from my on queue on Monday, though I never got a warning about it. I should probably grab Blues in Orbit before it's too late. [Edit - just ordered it via my cart] I just bought this one - 7 discs for $42 is hard to pass up... John Coltrane - The Heavyweight Champion: The Complete Atlantic Recordings I currently have only about half of the albums covered in this box, and none of those I do have are remastered versions, so this is a great upgrade for me at an unbeatable price.
  20. Jone Coltrane - The Heavyweight Champion: The Complete Atlantic Recordings
  21. In the mail today... Billie Holiday - Lady Day: The Best of Billie Holiday (Columbia, 2 discs) Lester Young - With the Oscar Peterson Trio (Verve, 1952)
