  1. Thanks for all the great information everyone! I'm still wavering about getting tje lp Mosaic. OTOH, it is lp, so from what Im reading, the sound will be a lot better than the cds. OTOH, there are so many alternate takes, which, by-and-large I do not enjoy. Decisions, decisions.
  2. Don't care to much for Byron, but I love Moran. So, who knows, it just might wind up being a decent cd.

I know that Matthew Shipp is supposed to be the somekind of great player, but after listening to Multiplication Table a couple of times, I cannot understand the hype. AMG gives this a great review, but, to my ears, the cd is way overblown. Seems like Shipp wanted to make a "big statement" with Multiplication Table and it did not work. I usually enjoy remakes of standards but "C Jam Blues" and "A Train" are just too clever for their own good. Much perfer Shipp when he's not making a Grand Artistic Statement.

  5. Been on a huge Cecil Taylor binge lately and I have a chance of getting the The Complete Candid Recordings of Cecil Taylor and Buell Neidlinger for about $150.00. So my question is: Is it a set worth getting? I know most of Taylor's Candid stuff is out on cd, so should I just get those or does the Mosaic have a bunch of alternate takes that I need? This set I can get is the lp set, if that makes any difference. Opinions wanted. Thanks.
  6. Congratulations Dan -- looks like a great home.
  7. I'm getting heavy into Cecil Taylor. Today I bought: --- The Willisau Concert (Intakt) --- Nailed (FMP) Thanks for the rec. John B.
  8. Sorry Leeway, I was making a joke about how "on time" these Blue Note lps from Classic Records get released. I'm still waiting for my copy of John Jenkins with Kenny Burrell that had a release date of November 2003 .
  9. No problem DrJ, you make good points in your post, and I do agree with you that sound is important, that's why I'm very excited about the upcoming Albert Ayler box from Reverant. Who doesn't want to hear some live Ayler with good sound? I would love a good remaster of Ayler's "Live at Slug's Saloon" but that, I feel, won't happen in my lifetime. So, that is not my beef. I usually do what you suggest -- just stay the heck away from threads that I don't like. It's just this whole McMaster vs. Van Gelder thing has been talked to death. They both have done good work, and some not so good. Why not leave it at that?

I was really wanting to buy this when it came out too. Well, hope it's out in its corrected form by the fall. It sounds like a great one.
  11. Just my stupid opinion: The day I don't buy a cd because of whose remastering the music, is the day I stop being a jazz fan and start being an idiot. Sorry to vent but after so many years of this, I'm just getting sick of this discussion.

I listened to Cecil Taylor Unit: It Is In The Brewing Luminous and ..... I'm speechless. Overwhelmed. Wow.
  13. This news flash just in from Classic Records -- The release date has been pushed back.
  14. Yeah, it would be nice if the Dodgers did win it all this year. That is who you meant, right?

YES! Order it HERE. Loved this from the description of the cd: To make single-card predictions using this CD, Gianni suggests that the listener think of a question, put his or her CD player in shuffle mode, and hit play. "The resulting piece will represent your answer," he says. B) Cool B) Is this cd really that good?
  16. Thnks for the reply, and especially on the update regarding the Art Ensemble box, I've been telling myself that if I don't buy it soon, I'll be kicking myself for a long time.
  17. Warning: Off Topic! Chuck, for the first time I really looked at your avatar: Is that your record collection in the background? If it is -- wow! Feel free to resume normal communications now.

This is the first time that I remember hearing Steve Swell. I'm still at the stage of just picking all the different kinds of cds possible, and listening for artists that I find intriguing. Swell is someone I'm going to have to look out for.
  19. Bev and Watts in the same sentence? Bev, of "Evil Woman" dullest druming in any top 40 record, Bevan? I'll see your , and raise you to ! P.S.
  20. ARIC, BEV BEVAN WAS THE WORST DRUMMER IN THE HISTORY OF ROCK. HE SUCKED, THEY SUCKED. BUT HEY, THEY WERE IN A SOUNDTACK FOR A JIM CARREY MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!, SO THAT MUST MEAN THEY RULE DUDE!!!!!! Now I will return to my normal life and way of thought -- thank you.
  21. How I keep myself in check is buying with cash only. Even when I use a credit card, I make myself have the cash in hand before I order. Even have a place where I keep my "music money". This way, I avoid running up the credit card.
  22. How is that? I've read about 5 or 6 of Vollmann's books, and have mixed feelings ... I like the books from his "American dreams" novels (the exact name escapes me, but I'm talking about "The Ice-Shirt," "The Rifles," "Fathers and Crows"), but haven't been too keen on the other stuff. Also, how much is it? Not too bad so far. I'm into vol. II right now, the "Case Studies," reading about the "defense of honor" reason for violence. It's very wide-ranging in the examples Vollman sites, and sometimes he doesn't explain those examples enough to make an impact. If you can believe this, I would say it's too early to tell, heck, I've only read about 450 pages . The cost was $120.00, which is a great deal for seven hardbound volumes. It also comes in a very nice case. I think it's one of those books that any real judgment of its worth cannot be made for a number of years.

Hey, this Anthony Braxton Quartet: (Dortmund) 1976 is a very righteous session. Love Braxton's solo on Composition 23 J, he's just plays the heck out of that alto. George Lewis plays great, everything is great ... but I'm sure you guys already know how good this date is.
  24. I'm sooooooo bummed out! Shorter is playing 15 minutes from where I live Saturday night......... AND I HAVE TO WORK!!!
