Just now ordered a used copy of:

Ellery Eskelin, Andrea Parkins, Jim Black -- "One Great Day"

41X4MY0DT7L._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Also have on order two others from this band: "The Secret Museum" and "12 (+1) Imaginary Views"

That will be a great disc. I have a live recording of this:

and they're a truly great band.

Yes, I went on a bit of a binge and got that one as well. A very creative and unique band. My introduction to them was Jazz Trash, which I have on MP3 but need to get a CD copy of. Great set of muisc.

I was a bit nonplussed by Quiet Music on the whole, frankly, although it does sparkle in spots. The vocalizations of Jessica Constable take some getting used to on that one. Anyways, I wanted to dig into some of the earlier stuff by these three simply because I found the instrument combination so intriguing -- risky, in a way; uncharted. And Eskelin is one of the most creative tenor saxophone players around, IMO.

Here's what's currently on order, or on the way via trades, at my house:

Mary Lou Williams -- Zoning

Thelonious Monk - Genius of Modern Music Vol. 2

Clifford Brown - The Complete Blue Note and Pacific Jazz Recordings

Herb Robertson - Certified

Evan Parker/Phillipp Wachsmann/Hugh Davies/Eddie Provost - 888

Al Cohn, Zoot Sims – You ‘n’ Me

Art Farmer – Sing Me Softly of the Blues

Ike Quebec – Blue and Sentimental

Sonny Rollins – Freedom Suite

Stanley Turrentine – Salt Song

Anthony Braxton -- Complete Arista Recordings (Mosaic)

Lee Konitz -- Lee Konitz With Warne Marsh

Lee Konitz -- Spirits

Carla Bley and her Remarkable Big Band - Appearing Nightly

Miles Davis - Round Midnight

John Coltrane - Blue Trane

Excited about all of these, but particularly eager to listen to the Williams, and the Monk of course. Very much looking forward the the Brown box set as well. Getting that in a trade. And finally, aside from the Braxton Mosaic, the thing I'm probably most looking forward to listening to is this new Carla Bley big band album. That'll be a whole new thing for me.

Marty Paich, The Broadway Bit/I Get a Boot Out of You (Collectors' Choice)

This one's been mentioned so often on the board recently that I felt, as a West Coast Jazz enthusiast, I had to get it. Yes OK, though certainly not equalling Art Pepper + Eleven with similar personnel. But even resembling/recalling an album like that is enough! :)

Lee Morgan - Tom Cat

Nice. I was just playing this one today. :tup

I gave it my first listen today and really enjoyed it. With a lineup of Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Jackie McLean, McCoy Tyner, Bob Cranshaw and Art Blakey, how can you lose? :tup:tup^_^

Some BMG deals in yesterday's mailbox:

51BE5X5NWTL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Andrew Hill - Judgement! (My first Andrew Hill)

Duke Ellington - Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins (My first Coleman Hawkins and giving Ellington a chance in the small group setting. Two birds with one stone.)

Hank Thompson & His Brazos Valley Boys - Vintage Collection (There's no country like the old country!)

I love the slinky title cut that kicks things off. Tom Cat is an apt title. :D

Recent orders:

A couple of discs by a man whose music I am woefully unfamiliar with (aside from Song for My Father).

Horace Silver - Blowin' the Blues Away

516ESTKKRCL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Horace Silver - Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers

51RXZYPZTJL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

... and another highly-regarded Carla Bley big band disc to satisfy my current indulgence:

Carla Bley - Fleur Carnivor

I bought this on the basis of the trailer at YouTube. McCoy is my piano hero and frankly I'll enjoy the three hours of rehearsal footage. It is seemingly odd that he's recorded so infrequently with guitarists-most notably IMO on Matador with Grant Green and I'm looking forward to hearing the results of these partnerships.
