  2. David Bowie’s final work. . . pretty fascinating. Too compressed in mastering, but if I adjust my gain structure down it sounds better. David Bowie “Black Star” Sony Blu-Spec cd
  3. Yes! Some of the twofer liner noten were full of variable insights. The noten Jon Hendricks wrote for the King Pleasure twofer are a gem of Jazz prose. The book that Orrin Keepnews published includes many of his Milestone twofer noten.
  4. Time for a listen to this beautiful album. I love late Jobim. A family of musicians playing lovely music they love. Antonio Carlos Jobim “Passarim” Verve Japan cd
  5. Today
  6. Dan Barrett “Melody in Swing” on Arbor Jazz. Barrett is an amazing trombone player, one of the few modern men who mastered Jack Teagarden’s water glass as a trombone bell method. 200×200 8.83 KB
  7. I don't know Jessica but I'd be knocking the door down to see what Moran and Mills conjure up 2025 Artist-In-Residence Jason Moran and Jeff Mills with special guest Jessica Care Moore
  8. Clef Records MG C -677 (Japan 1990) - Norman Granz' Jam Session # 7 - rec. 1953
  9. Which reissue series would this have been? I do not own all that many OJC CDs but those I have include the original liner notes, as do the OJC (and similar, somewhat earlier) LP facsimile reissues reproducing the original cover artwork and layout. OTOH, that crop of Don Schlitten-produced Prestige/New Jazz reissues from the 60s/early 70s featured updated, insightful liner notes from (what I have seen at a quick glance at my LPs) the likes of Mark Gardner, Martin Williams, Chris Albertson, Doug Ramsey, Dan Morgenstern a.o. Not a bad selection of writers IMO. But I think you are right about not knowing (initially!) what you got when looking at the exterior of the Prestige twofers. For example, a photo of Miles Davis from (more or less) the "Electric Miles" period on the cover when 1956 classic quintet sessions are inside can only be attributed to the tastes and expectations of the average jazz buyers of the early 70s. But the insides of those twofers tell it all - so no doubt about what the buyer gets. And after all, this out-of-tune cover artwork problem was one that occurred with most reissue labels of the 70s (and often later as well). Good idea!
  10. Edmonton 28....Toronto 20 Good game between two evenly-matched teams. 11. Well, I'm going to disagree some about the "Fantasy" liner notes. My recollection is that I didn't know what I was buying when looking at the exterior of the twofers. Each OJC included new comments from Ira Gitler putting the album in historical perspective. The OJC CD exteriors included the recording dates as well.
  12. I bought lots of twofers back in the day, and still have many of them. The notes on both Prestige and Blue Note tended to be quite good. Anyone else remember the analogy to French literary theory re 'second removism'?
  13. Pre-OJC Prestige was always good (or bad, depending on how you looked at it) about putting new covers on some items in their catalog every few years, and with that came new, contemporaneous liner notes. That continued into the 24000 series The OJC juggernaut put a stop to that There's some interesting reading in there. A dedicated geek with proper resources could compile a nifty PDF for circulation to fellow geeks.
  14. https://youtu.be/vvOTLtTG5G0?si=LENwszXdH5aW2dcX Mihai Traistariu "Cât de frumoasă ești !” (= "How beautiful you are!" That´s my absolute favourite when it´s about non jazz music ! That´s from my country România and it´s the song my love Andreea Irina aka "Miss RA" taught me to sing and to play on piano. I mean, when a girl gives a boy THAT SONG, she loves him.....
