ghost of miles Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 I thought Allegro carried them, but apparently not... any suggestions? Quote
jazzbo Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 Well Worlds is the most consistent source as far as availability and information before purchase goes, but their prices are NOT the best. . . . Quote
Brad Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 Ditto on what Lon said. Didn't realize Allegro had dropped them. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 Allegro dropped them a year (or 2 - how time flies) ago. City Hall is the US distributor now. I have not checked lately but Wal-Mart was the cheapest online source. Their selection is/was limited but worth checking. Quote
alankin Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 (edited) CD Universe has a bigger selection of Classics than Wal-Mart and matches or is cheaper in many cases... Edited January 6, 2005 by alankin Quote
jazzbo Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 Right, Allegro lost distributorship some time back; remember all those half price Classics at cybermusicplus.com? I bought so many it. . . hurt, still hurts, yes it does. Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 8, 2005 Author Report Posted January 8, 2005 I've actually had some luck in the past day or two buying them from Deep Discount CD, which had most of the titles I was looking for at around $12.97 plus free shipping. Quote
mjzee Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Is this label generally considered to have better sounding masters than other compilation labels? Or are they more appreciated for their completist approach? I've read boardmembers speak approvingly of this label, so would like to know more. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Not noted generally for the sound (but much of it is fine), the complete and ongoing nature of the label is the main attraction. In spite of tons of opinions to the contrary, I prefer their Armstrong Hot 5s and 7s to JSP and Columbia/Sony. Quote
BERIGAN Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 In spite of tons of opinions to the contrary, I prefer their Armstrong Hot 5s and 7s to JSP and Columbia/Sony. what are you ? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 My friend Terry Martin and I spent an afternoon comparing the various transfers. That was the result. Why are you? Quote
LAL Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 In spite of tons of opinions to the contrary, I prefer their Armstrong Hot 5s and 7s to JSP and Columbia/Sony. Yikes! This is a temptation to get the Classics discs even though I've the JSP and Columbias. To these ears, the sound is actually very good overall, particularly the more recent releases of material from the mid 40s onwards. Quote

Harold_Z Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 Yikes! This is a temptation to get the Classics discs even though I've the JSP and Columbias. Hot 5s I have purchased since I went jazz mad (just a couple of years ago). The Louis Armstrong Story (Columbia lps) French CBS EMI late 80s Columbia (the worst - by far) JSP Recent Columbia (Sony) box There may have been something I've forgotten. Quote
LAL Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 late 80s Columbia (the worst - by far) Have those too, and agreed, they sound terrible. Quote
Jaffa Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 (edited) In case anybody wonders: Classics have been on (unpleasant) temporary hold for some time due to a distribution problem that should be resolved within weeks. The last issued was 1379; Stan Getz. Incidentally, Classics' Blues & Rhythm-series (5000 ff.) is not affected at all. How do I know ? I have written all liner-notes for the (Jazz-series) since 1989... Edited January 17, 2005 by Jaffa Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 17, 2005 Author Report Posted January 17, 2005 Great news, Jaffa! Hope you stick around as well... many fans of the CC series in these parts. Quote
Jaffa Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 Thanks - I'll try to be around more actively from now on ! Quote
jazzbo Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 You better! Thanks for letting us know! Quote
homer9600 Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 The best overall source for Chronological Classics for me is CD Connection: http://www.cdconnection.com They have a good selection of in-print titles and unlike Amazon they are always in-stock and ship quickly. This holds true for all their titles. I shop Amazon but I usually buy from CD Connection simply because 99.999% of the time they have the item in stock and usually cheaper than their competition and most stores. They carry all the major labels of course and many of the specialty labels. They just added HEP records and have most of the available titles in-stock. For those of you who have no issues with Definitive Records they have most of their titles in-stock. They also back up your purchases. I purchased a double CD recently and one of the CD's had a manfactueres flaw in it. I e-mailed CD Connection, had a reply in 24 hours and they mailed me a perfect replacement CD and a post-paid return box. They didn't ask me to first return the CD. You can only get this mind of attention from a company like Mosaic. I do not work for CD Connection, but I do purchase a lot of music so sorry if this seems like a commercial. When a Chronological Classic is not available from CD Connection your best source iare Amazon Marketplace Sellers - many of whom sell at the same price or cheaper than Amazon. Quote
