  1. Back in the days when I was chairman of the Chicago Jazz Festival we wanted Stanley for the '82 fest. I called his manager (Richard Carpenter) and asked for the fee to get him as a single - we would provide the rhythm section. Carpenter said Stanley doesn't work that way. I said the trio would be Kenny Barron, Buster Williams and Billy Hart. He said that changed everything. As Stanley was waiting in the wings to go on, a stagehand asked him if he'd be playing tunes xx, yy and zz. Stanley said "No man, this is a Jazz Festival!"
  2. More purchases at Open Minds:
  3. It is available from the source for $35 at https://www.otherminds.org/recording/conlon-nancarrow-studies-player-piano/
  4. Gonna be listening to stuff I bought in SF at Other Minds. Up first a replacement for old lps.
  5. Sad to see little reaction to this event. Wonderful week in San Francisco, topped by the 4 days of “Other Minds 25”. Connected again with online friend Brooks Frank aka BFrank and musician friends Myra Melford, Mark Dresser, Hamid Drake, Tyshawn Sorey, Larry Ochs, Junius Paul, Vincent Davis, Mary Halvorson, James Fei, Tomeka Reid and specially old friends Roscoe Mitchell and Anthony Braxton. This was the best thing I can imagine for the past week.
  6. Just encountered Anthony on the street outside our hotel - he’s in great spirits.
  7. Yes, Wadada emailed that he had to cancel. Piece in the Chronicle about the fest.
  8. Dipping into this one again. Fascinating.
  9. Warne Marsh at one of our sessions in February 1976. He wanted me to use this on the cover and call the record "Warne Out". I declined because it might confuse my customers, but he used that title on another record. Photo credit to Terry Martin.
  10. Sigh.
  11. Somehow I knew that would spook you.
  12. Here is an easy start - 30 tracks:
  13. Both Golden Circle cds contain 75+ minutes of music.
  14. Yves Charuest (alto saxophone) and Benedict Taylor (viola) - Knotted Threads
  15. Duh! Perfect. Farewell.
  16. Is there an echo in here?
  17. We just returned from 4 days in Pittsburgh. Cubs won 2 of 3 and gave the Pirates their loss #100. Third game last night began with a first pitch home run and the game ended 9 - 0. Sweet ending.
  18. Back in the Spring, hoping for the best, my wife Ann bought tickets (prime seats for all 3 games) for the late season Cubs visit to Pittsburgh hoping to see the Cubs "clinch". Since then, the owners dumped all the players and we will be spending big bucks to watch the Sub-Cubs.
  19. I was at Delmark at the time of their Sun Ra purchase. Bob had earlier bought a Donald Byrd master and I found the list of available masters and encouraged Bob to buy the Ras. I have a memory of an acetate of Joe Gordon - probably not the disc mentioned 'cause I'm pretty sure I would have remembered the Ra titles. Red and white label like the one pictured. It might still be at Delmark. Another possibility is my memory if faulty and that is the disc from Delmark - Wolfgang's Vault bought the contents of the Jazz Record Mart a few years ago and the acetate could have been there.
