  1. I remember the sessions and the rehearsals. In fact Roscoe called me last week to ask if I remembered when the rehearsals began. My answer was about a month before the first session. I think he was trying to nail down some publishing information. I also remember taking a phone call in the control room letting Lester Bowie know he was a new daddy - Fontella had given birth. I scribbled a note informing Lester and passed it into the studio. Unfortunately the note was passed to Lester Lashley.
  2. Haven't listened to this in ages.
  3. Long ago Gus Statiras was a friend. Sigh.
  4. Just pulled them off the shelf and noticed the first box is a quarter inch thicker than the second box. Examination revealed the individual jackets of the first box have spines and the second ones don't. Was this a critical decision?
  5. This is the most recent listing I have. I also have a 24 page cd catalog from the same time but you will need to give me an email address for that.
  6. and this one.
  7. Agreed! Though I really love the Scherzos on this; I had them on vinyl in the late '70s.
  8. Just returned from a gig by Barry Altschul's 3dom Factor w/ Joe Fonda and Jon Irabagon. Wonderful to hear real music in the flesh.
  9. I received a promo copy of the box when issued. Enclosed was a hand written note from Cuscuna explaining the discs were pressed in "changer order" and the labels were all wrong. "Record One is 1 / 4 not 1 / 2 Record Two is 2 / 5 not 3 / 4 Record Three is 3 / 6 not 5 / 6" They were going to call them all back and repress but Braxton said he liked the new sequence and they let it go. I haven't compared it with the Mosaic to see which order they used.
  10. 2 of the 3 I checked do.
  11. Susan Alcorn - pedal steel guitar Joe McPhee - soprano saxophone & pocket trumpet Ken Vandermark - tenor saxophone & clarinet Astral Spirits
  12. I am a fan of the NYC5 since the '60s. I have lps, cds, cdr burns of all the material and was curious about the transfers in this cheap set. After an hour I discovered this is NOT the complete recordings of the band. I first checked out the Montmartre material on disc 2. The first track from vol. 1 (Cisum) has been faded 2 minutes before the end and the last track from vol. 2 is missing completely (Trio - over 15 minutes). At that point I stopped listening and will try again tomorrow.
  13. Type Bud Powell in the Amazon search bar and it is the second item - at least on my computer.
  14. Haven't played this in a while.
  15. I distributed Marx' labels in the mid '80s and still have a couple catalogs from that time if you have questions.
  16. Now up - "The Great Quartet" - Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Ron Carter and Tony Williams.
  17. Confused. Are you talking about "Mad Man"?
  18. I know what it is/was.
