  1. In honor of my father - My father introduced me to jazz as a teen and sent me on my journey. About 15 years later he answered my phone, turned to me and said "Duke Ellington wants to speak with you"!
  2. My collection database says I am closing in on about 200 discs.
  3. This is a fine collection covering 1936-39. IIRC, Bailey sings on fewer than half the titles.

  11. I remember - Betsch was having dinner with friends and time got away from him. As the band walked on stage Shepp turned to Joel and said "First song, play as fast as you can". Joel had just come off stage after playing with the Jazz Members Big Band. Betsch was kicking stuff around back stage in frustration.
  12. It's about a mile, so a vehicle would be needed to make the deadline.
  13. They were direct recordings. These must be recorded from broadcasts. The festival hired the sound crew and NPR / WBEZ / Jazz Alive took their feed.
