  1. It is a rotating chair. I believe they are 3 year appointments.
  2. The first 15 tracks are taken from the 2 Delmark cds and the balance is from Super-Sonic Jazz on Evidence/Saturn.
  3. Too many chords to let a horn player work.
  4. Why the hell do you all change your names? Regulars from the other board can easily figure out who you are but the rest of us are in the dark. Not really fair to your new friends.
  5. Did I mention his friends called him Al.
  6. I'm with Larry on this. Wish I still had the Bean Rudepoema record.
  7. During 1962 and 1963 I attended a series of gigs (4 or 5) by the band at a ballroom in Iowa City. The owner used to get Basie, Herman and Maynard on off nights when they were on the road. Always hung around and talked to the members and took them to after hours sessions. What a great experience.
  8. The Chicago store had a huge inventoy but I would not call it "decently stocked". It could have been better stocked with half the inventory.
  9. Happy, happy! I am a big fan of folks on this board older than I am.
  10. If you are married to Anne Archer, way to go. If not, I'm afraid it is just happy birthday.
  11. Some info here. I last saw Dick and his wife at a Roscoe Mitchell large ensemble gig at the Velvet Lounge at the end of June.
  12. First thing to know is Wang is of Norwegian descent. The name was pronounced Vong, but the family gave up that fight years ago.
  13. A quick search of Bruyninckx found this session which ties into the Carter date in question: Kay Starr (vcl) acc by Benny Carter's "Little Jazz Pills" : Benny Carter (tp) Bumps Meyers (ts) Sonny White (p) James Cannady (g) Thomas Moultrie (b) Percy Brice (d) AFRS Jubilee Show, Hollywood, c. early April 1946 JDB171 He's funny that way V-Disc 803, Dan (Jap)VC-5017, Jasmine (E)337/38 (CD) On the sunny side of the street (unissued)
  14. The Jazz Institute of Chicago has an ongoing program of interviews. I think it started in the late '70s. Don't know how extensive the list is but they are supposed to be held by the Chicago Jazz Archive in the University of Chicago Library. John Litweiler would have better information.
  15. Irving Ashby would be my first guess. A quick check of a discography shows sessions by Carter's big band, on either side of the Keynote date, with the following rhythm section: Sonny White (p) James Cannady (g) Thomas Moultrie (b) Percy Brice (d).
  16. Doesn't Ventura play bass sax on one of Dizzy's Philips dates from the early '60s? Memories from school days.
  17. The city is a fascinating combination of provincialism and cosmopolitan sophistication serving up a delightful stew of prophets, pamphleteers, public declaimers, independent thinkers and crackpots.
  18. I do not believe either Sun Ra or the AACM would have been possible outside the "social climate" in Chicago. Not sure I'd be comfortable with anything beyond that.
  19. If I had to dump most of my Kentons, I'd keep the following Capitol cds: The Innovations Orchestra City of Glass Easy Go Contemporary Concepts Kenton Showcase If the bug digs deeper, keep going.
  20. I've thought about Kirk w/r/t AEC before also. Do not confuse Jarman with the AEC in general. He was a component and his influence changed quickly. In the end, I believe Dolphy was a heavier influence on Joseph. The Josephs (there are/were a few of them) are a mildly complicated group from my experience.
