During 1962 and 1963 I attended a series of gigs (4 or 5) by the band at a ballroom in Iowa City. The owner used to get Basie, Herman and Maynard on off nights when they were on the road. Always hung around and talked to the members and took them to after hours sessions. What a great experience.

The Chicago store had a huge inventoy but I would not call it "decently stocked". It could have been better stocked with half the inventory.

First thing to know is Wang is of Norwegian descent. The name was pronounced Vong, but the family gave up that fight years ago.

The Jazz Institute of Chicago has an ongoing program of interviews. I think it started in the late '70s. Don't know how extensive the list is but they are supposed to be held by the Chicago Jazz Archive in the University of Chicago Library. John Litweiler would have better information.

Irving Ashby would be my first guess. A quick check of a discography shows sessions by Carter's big band, on either side of the Keynote date, with the following rhythm section: Sonny White (p) James Cannady (g) Thomas Moultrie (b) Percy Brice (d).

I do not believe either Sun Ra or the AACM would have been possible outside the "social climate" in Chicago. Not sure I'd be comfortable with anything beyond that.

I've thought about Kirk w/r/t AEC before also. Do not confuse Jarman with the AEC in general. He was a component and his influence changed quickly. In the end, I believe Dolphy was a heavier influence on Joseph. The Josephs (there are/were a few of them) are a mildly complicated group from my experience.
