  1. Rummaging through this fascinating box, again.
  2. Bob told me about this. I believe it had some relationship with Selmer musical instruments. I know there were some Erroll Garner sides on Selmer in the '40s.
  3. My favorite Sinfoniettas are Ancerl and Horenstein. The Horenstein version is slow and gloomy - I asked him about that (in 1969) and he said something like "This is patriotic music and must be interpreted according to the times".
  4. With Joe Newman, Bill Harris, Hal McKusick, Freddie Greene, Oscar Pettiford and Jo Jones.
  5. Discs 1 & 3 duplicate the same discs in the 4 disc set. The 2nd disc is drawn from discs 2 & 4.
  6. Because of the 2 tracks mentioned by Medjuck above. While I do have the Mosaic set, I frequently grab "The Best of" to hear a track or two. It is just easier.
  7. If you can track one down, this is an excellent 4 disc distillation of the Mosaic set.
  8. I have that on vinyl.. A good one indeed.
  9. I wasn't able to attend the opening but just before the paintings were carted off to Chicago Roscoe gave Ann and me a "Facetime" tour of his house to see the works. Pretty astounding. A copy of the catalog arrived in today's mail. Hope to get to Chicago while it's still on.
  10. More Sibelius - this time the Dorati portion of this set
  11. Fine recording - too bad the planned (expanded) compact disc edition was never finished.
  12. Robert Kajanus conducting the 3rd Symphony
  13. I'd forgotten about that one.
  14. Fewer ideas and less information have rarely been a winning strategy.
  15. IIRC, I caught Crosby, Stills and Nash in Muskegon, MI on the 4th of July 2004.
  16. Anyway to block this shit?
  17. Desert island stuff for me. I bought the original while I was a senior in High School. Purchased at Yonkers in downtown Des Moines.
  18. Freddie Redd's The Thespian on Shades of Red and Dizzy Reece's The Rake on Star Bright do it for me.
  19. Worthy of a thread. Complicated story and I had contact with some of the participants.
  20. Great performances. I had most of this on lp back in the day, replaced them with early cd editons and currently have them in the BIG box. After the Brahms, I tend to gravitate to the Schubert trios.
  21. The image on the cover of the Uptown Hank Mobley release is in the Mosaic book tagged as an image of Sonny Stitt.
