New Yorker article - The Record EffectChuck Nessa replied to Robert J's topic in Miscellaneous Music At some point (earlier than most presume) it stops being a "jazz recording". Talk to me about Armstrong, Morton, Oliver, Hawk, Ellington, Bird, Trane, Ornette, (or whoever) and then talk to me about "tracking" as it is currently practiced. It may be "something" but it ain't "jazz".

I would not trust 'em. Call the DMV (or whatever it's called in NY) and ask about getting a copy of the title.

Duke Ellington : Never No Lament: The Blanton-WeChuck Nessa replied to Bright Moments's topic in Recommendations I like the sound of the Centennial box and Never No Lament is from the same masters. I agree Jack The Bear has some problems but NOT enough to keep people away. FYI, Steve Lasker (Centennial box engineer) redid Jack The Bear for the BMG "Centennial Collection" (cd/dvd combo) and it sounds dandy. I will eventually burn a new disc to replace the earlier one.

I will buy it. I sent a letter to Norman Granz asking him to record solo Ellington (as he did with Tatum) but since I was a nobody, he didn't respond. The one time I had Duke's ear he slyly brushed off the idea . I really don't think he understood the unique qualities of his touch and skill.

LF: Dizzy Gillespie Reunion Big Band - MPSChuck Nessa replied to MartyJazz's topic in Offering and Looking For... Nothing extra. FWIW the catalog number is 533 550-2.

AFAIK all their issues were licensed from Japan. They issued a Joseph Jarman date with Geri Allen as well. Too slow on the draw again.

I've got a green-label Atlantic original stereo pressing (don't anybody get all ga-ga, I found it in a dusty mom-and-pop back in the 70s). To get to the original gist of the question - did Rudy have a stereo recorder in 1956? That Tom Dowd documentary was on the Sundance channel this morning, and in it. Dowd talks about how Atlantic was recording in/with true stereo before anybody else. I find that claim hard to accept at face value, but not as a generalized statement. Is it possible that Rudy engineered this session at the Atlantic studios, perhaps to get a taste of using a stereo machine, or something like that? Purely speculation, to be sure. Also - my cover has the stereo designation seemingly stamped into the cover in yellow ink. It's obviously an Atlantic-designed logo and such, so is this the method that Atlantic used on their covers early on to designate stereo pressings? ← Rudy told me his first stereo date for BN was the Sabu date. He said he'd been experimenting with the stereo gear on other companies dates but wanted it to be "beyond experimental" before he gave it to Alfred. He said it was "usual" to try out new equipment/techniques on others before introducing them to Lion. In one of the online interviews with RVG he mentions at least one session for Atlantic when Dowd hauled new stereo gear to Hackensack and they ran parallel recordings. So - maybe the mono is Rudy and the stereo is Dowd. FWIW, all the early Atlantic stereos had the "embossed" stereo designation - some yellow, some black and I seem to remember blue, green and red too.

I come mainly for the snacks.

No mention of "expanding" the track in the cd booklet. The listed timing is 6:05 and the music actually stops at about 6:00.

I hear he kicks ass on Giant Steps too. ← Talkin' 'bout Odean?
