  1. My guess is Chris Connor.
  2. For a "representation of the time" and great friggin' music, the "Old Man Blues" from "Check and Double Check" is priceless. Sadly, I sent my tape of this to a friend (on the board) and it was lost. I'll get a DVD soon. I would say any available Ellington is worth the money.
  3. Sorry I missed it. Where is it? Big Al, I meant all the reissues you listed in your original post for this thread! OOOHHHHHHHH, now I get it! You meant that they had all already been released on your side of the pond! Some of us Americans, especially us Texans, are a little slow on the draw this AM! Don't want to search for it but we did talk about these releases about a month ago. I remember giving praise to Sweets and the Jam Session disc.
  4. Just finished the first disc of the Hill Select. First Mosaic I've played in about 6 months but it was in my box this morning.
  5. Sorry we missed it. Our "errands" took much longer than I thought. We didn't get to eat 'til after 9.
  6. I have a 1219 dedicated to playing 78s. Great machine. I bought it (new) around 1970 (+ or -). United Audio was the US company that distributed Dual over here. They made their own base for the TT.
  7. Thanks for the pic.
  8. If you trade bits for music, you lose. B-)
  9. Hey, what time is the show? Ann and I will be shopping in the late afternoon, eating at Applebee's (to use up a gift certificate) and then..............
  10. It is at least very, very good. I have a habit of losing concentration on other Lyons dates (may be my flaw, but real). My "very, very good" qualification is 'cause I don't think he ever made the "best" recording in him.
  11. Another error in one of the AEC notes saying the Mitchell, Bowie, Favors trio dates from 1968.
  12. Lester Bowie told me of the various "sideman gigs" on Byg and America, Lyons was the only leader to hold rehearsals.
  13. IIRC, Universal did not own Commodore at the time. I believe Mosaic licensed the material from Gabler/Commodore. The Pair cds were a different license with Gabler.
  14. West Coast Hot is a compilation of material from 2 Bradford/Carter lps and one by Tapscott. These 3 lps were first issued on Flying Dutchman.
  15. I suggest you try again.
  16. The sound is ok - no reason to ignore the date, BUT no way would I say this is the best Rudd/Tchicai recording. Mohawk is a masterpiece of group music thanks to all the players. The masterful drumming of Milford Graves interacting with the others is a big part of the equation. Mohawk is a mofo! The ESP disc is fine too.
  17. I will keep my fingers crossed for a few titles. Thanks.

    Jimmy Raney

No time to collect my thoughts now but I put a band together for the Chicago Jazz Festival with Raney, Lou Levy and Warne Marsh. It should have "killed". Odd outcome to say the least. More later if someone prods me. I listened to the tapes recently and was dismayed.

    Steve Lacy

I wouldn't sweat it. Let it go.
  20. Does that mean one on top too?
  21. Right now I'm having problems with everything BUT Organissimo and Google. No idea why. I forgot there are other sites.
  22. Earl Hines "Quintessential Recording Session".
  23. I always felt the unissued titles and alternate takes revealed an earlier (stride based) side of Nichols. If the alternates had been issued first we'd have a very different (but fine) impression of the artist. I found this set to be one of the best "excuses" for alternates I know. I would not want to be without them. You can always program your listening pleasure.
