  1. Been trying to ignore these dang birthday threads but I can't ignore this one. Have a dandy day.
  2. It's a dial-up. What do you think?
  3. Yup! You can compare the Madge version with the Ogdon (Chuck, were you at the Madge Chicago performance?) Not a Madge fan - I admire his "pluck" but not the results. I'm sure Ogdon's (sometimes wayward) recording will be surpassed but don't think I will live to hear it (or afford it).
  4. Sorabji's Opus Clavicembalisticum.
  5. That's what happens when the producer chooses the sidemen.

    ears...

    What?
  7. E. Power Biggs. Or as Mrs Biggs called him "Biggsie" - no lie. She used to call the record store in Cambridge asking for him. "Is Biggsie there"?
  8. Can't wait 'til you are on the road lookin' for something as good as Popeye's or Subway.
  9. I forwarded this thread to (my good friend) Donald Clarke and hope he responds. Somewhere I have pages and pages from him ranting about "the archives" and dealing with "thieves". Come on DC, unload.
  10. All 8 are on Johnny Dodds 1926 on Classics.
  11. So........Treet is sub-Spam - Tang must be sub-Treet. What is sub-Tang?
  12. I hope they don't hit the Norvo masters!
  13. For a "faithful, straight" version (on piano) you can't go wrong with the Naxos recordings by Jando - 2 doubles available for little money. Gould has an equal number of advocates and enemies but I suggest you ignore these for now. For a more "historic/romantic" view, the Edwin Fischer set is a delight. Not sure about the best transfers though.
  14. Complete Benny Goodman Vol IV / 1936-37 on Bluebird.
  15. Musta bot the big box from Yourmusic! Did the same and gave my 4 sets to our daughter.
  16. He is writing a review for Coda. With his permission I will post his email here.
  17. Not fictional: New Orleans Wanderers - George Mitchell, Kid Ory, Johnny Dodds. Joe Clark, Lil Armstrong & Johnny St Cyr. This was recorded on July 13, 1926 and is one of my all time favorites. The next day the same band did 4 more titles for Columbia under the name of New Orleans Bootblacks. Unfortunately the classic Oliver and Morton bands had 7 members so they don't qualify for your query. I love the above mentioned material as much as ANYTHING in the history of this music.
  18. Tonight I received an email from John Litweiler detailing his experiences at the festival. I am astounded to see no reports here (did I miss some? - I hope so). More interesting to me (at least) than the Neverland Ranch thread. WTF are we about? Nothing wrong with humor but DAMN!
  19. Back in my music retail days some of us amused ourselves by inventing new ice cream flavors. My favorite was banana beef.
  20. Latter half of the '70s but I don't remember the years. The first time was at a (long) taping of a TV show with Klook and the second was at the Chicago Jazz Fest with Diz, Al, Ray Brown, Max and Cecil Payne.
  21. Is that the car you drove on your trip to KC, Chuck? Yikes! No shocks on those crappy Missouri roads? That'll keep you "regular" for sure! ← No, we drove Ann's car - she has a job and a 2002 PT Cruiser she bought for $13,200. My car won't go 20 miles without a recharge.
  22. That's how you get your packages.
  23. I was making a "generic" statement but if you wanna make it personal and compare 1040s for the last few years I'm game. Driving a 1992 Nissan Sentra without 5th gear, shocks and I have to charge the battery each morning (alternator died) to get to the PO for the mail. edited to add Sentra to the above.
