Unlike Bev and Mr Ties Webern is one of my favorite composers. I used to be really dogmatic about my tastes in performance but have learned to appreciate different takes on the material. Not really a fan of the Julliard or Emerson. My "old standby" recording of the Webern quartets is Quartetto Italiano and have recently enjoyed the Artis Quartet. For the historically inclined, I urge the purchase of a set on Music & Arts titled "In Honor of Rudolf Kolisch" where you can hear many of the "New Viennese" works played by someone there at the creation. You should be able to find a fair amount of info online.

Thanks for that Chris. I first met him when Ann and I spent 2 weeks in the Copenhagen area around 1980. We were staying with Nils and Mihoko Winther and they had NHOP and his lovely wife over for dinner and conversation one evening. What a delight they were. A couple of years later he was in Chicago with Oscar Peterson playing at Rick's. One night I agreed to meet at the club after the gig and found Niels-Henning and OP enjoying beverages in the bar. After some conversation, NHOP and I agreed to go to Andy's the next day to hear Truck Parham playing with a band for "after work" Chicagoans. I'll never forget the joint pleasure of Truck ("thanks for bringing that giant by") and Niels ("It's great to hear one of the real old time bass players"). What a very personable guy and fantastic musician. Never heard a soul say anything negative about him.

BTW, way past time to buy a discography Dan.

The Evidence discs are clones of the Specialty (Fantasy) discs. Not a thing to gain.

I heard Keepnews and Max Roach discuss this session. I think the main problem was the head. I don't think there was a successful out head and one had to be cobbled together. This sort of thing is more common than you'd think.
