The Powell trios with Ruby are important enough to put up with the programming nonsense. One of the Powell discs includes my favorite recording of Liza (great tune) and Braff plays his ass off. The sound is terrific on the Vanguard reissues and we won't likely get "corrected" versions. Buy 'em all and make your own cdrs.

I suggest working for JRM/Delmark for a year, start your own label and live the rest of your life with the consequences.

You don't think some seasoned collectors want better masterings of "classic recordings"? The RVG is also slipping in some sides normally relegated to the Conn series, and they are cheaper.

Not sure of the contents but there is a Unique single cd of the Stuttgart concert. In the US it is listed on the City Hall website. The Enja cds are both expanded versions of the lps.

We get a bunch of RVG remasters instead.

I've been told by "experts" if you leave a gallon of tap water "open to the elements" for an hour the chlorine evaporates. No telling what the chlorine does to the enviroment, but tap water should be ok. If you really want to filter your water, you need a "reverse osmosis" system.

This is a fine example of the '50s white/tight/Quincy Jones stuff. Very professional, but not inspired. Don't scream at me - I buy it and enjoy. I just know what I'm doing.

At one time I had all the lps. From memory, Carnival Sketches is the least desirable. Look for the vinyl and buy them in order; Breakthrough, Debut in Blues, Carnival Sketches. I heard him a few times in Chicago. He played with an organ trio.

I think the first jazz lp I bought was Louis's Hot 5 on Columbia. First lp was Fats Domino.

Though maddeningly programmed, the Vanguard Mel Powell discs contain prime Braff.

My only baseball book is "That Old Ball Game", a fascinating book of photos from around 1850 'til 1930. It was published in 1975 and is probably hard to find. The text is by our own Larry Kart.

After Hours is out of print - BUT Walmart lists it on their site. I frequently check them for out of print stuff. Somethin' Special is oop in the US and I missed it.

I suggest the Storyville disc titled Masters of Jazz Vol. 11. Two trio dates from 1968 and 1980. Though it seems to be out of print, keep your eyes out for another Storyville called Revisits the Goodman Years. You can order direct from Storyville.

I don't think Norman Granz would ever bow to political consideration.

When I was working on the Chicago Jazz Festival we used him as MC a couple of times, and he was a very warm guy to work with. He has a weekly show on WBEZ in Chicago. Check outTHIS.

I first encountered him as a trombonist in Dizzy's mid '50s big band. I bought the RCAs as they were released. Five RCA tracks showed up on a Bluebird cd called "The Arrangers". This long out of print is priceless - it also includes the Gil Evans and George Russell tracks from the RCA Hal McKusick lp. The real prize is seven tracks from an unissued Johnny Carisi date. All of the sidemen have histories. I'm sure internet searches will inform you about them. Altoist Buzzy Renn shows up on the Uptown Dodo Marmarosa cd.
