  1. With Carl Saunders on trumpet. I haven't seen a reputable news source report his death, so I'm hoping he is still with us. I also finished listening to Saunders with Phil Urso yesterday, as I was in the middle of it in the car.

    Tony Fruscella

I'm surprised Allen's post is allowed to stand.
  3. I like the Bubba brand, which does an excellent job maintaining temperature.
  4. The single disc with the previously unreleased Jones-Smith Inc tracks.
  5. $45 for 75 minutes of Herbie sounds like a bargain.
  6. This arrived yesterday after I paid less than 7 bucks after tax with free shipping. I already had the moving Eastbourne concert from the Centennial box, but there's plenty of other stuff that's new to me. The Reader's Digest material is fun and hearing Duke's vocals on 'Moon Maiden' puts a smile on my face. The three short solos from the party are an interesting snapshot of that time. Seriously, to be at a party with Willie 'The Lion' Smith and Duke and have Duke play the piano? I can't even imagine it. Having the bonus Tanglewood material to complete what I have on the giant box is nice. I also appreciate having the Duke introductions to the Tanglewood and festival material.
  7. Although I of course have a ton of Jordan with Bird and a few sideman dates, this is my first leader date of his.
  8. When Ron Carter had his big band in Detroit a few years ago, he mentioned that Jerry Dodgion was ailing and had the wonderful Steve Wilson in his place. I thus never got to see Dodgion perform, but I'll continue to enjoy the recordings he made. Thank you for the music, Mr. Dodgion, and rest in peace.
  9. This'll tide me over until the Mosaic pops up for a price I can swing.
  10. I was shooting the breeze with Scott Robinson, an individual player himself, last year and he raved about how no one sounds like Lockjaw.
  11. When grabbing this image, I saw there is a copy on Discogs for $50, which is a good price.
  12. I bought the three-disc Duke Ellington Live and Rare box for under $7, which will complement the Centennial box. As part of the current Qobuz sale I went on a HighNote splurge and bought: Woody Shaw - Live, Volumes 1-4 Woody Shaw and Louis Hayes - The Tour, Volumes 1 & 2 Larry Willis - I Fall in Love Too Easily ( The Final Session at Rudy Van Gelder's) Gene Ludwig-Pat Martino Trio - Young Guns Lester Young - Pres in Europe Charlie Ventura and Bill Harris - Live at the Three Deuces, Volumes 1 and 2 Hot Lips Page - After Hours in Harlem For 12 CD-quality downloads, I paid $33.25. I gave up on trying to choose between those Woody Shaw live albums and simply bought them all.
  13. I've never seen him live, but I enjoy his playing on two Yoron Israel albums. He's also recorded with Abdullah Ibrahim, Steve Coleman and Lionel Hampton!
  14. This is my third time listening to this one in the 4 days since it arrived. Between this, the recently acquired Centennial box and the three-disc set of '30s Columbia material, I'm simply in awe and overwhelmed in the most positive sense of the world.
