  1. My aunt gave my daughter a Barnes and Noble gift card for her birthday. In addition to the books about dinosaurs, ponies and unicorns, we also bought this. My daughter told me she wanted to read just this one after lunch.
  2. I had Amazon no-rush credits I used to download this, not realizing it contained the entire Swing's the Thing session, which I ordered in CD form earlier this week. Oops. Still, it has 22 additional songs, so I'll survive.
  3. What's better than when your five-year-old daughter starts mouthing 'wah-wah' to plunger-muted trombone? When she follows that up with some enthusiastic air clarinet.

    Sam Jones

When I saw Louis Hayes in December, I thought about Sam Jones and how much he would dig Dezron Douglas.
  5. I remember it being announced at the concert that Geri Allen was originally supposed to be on the gig.
  6. That was the first year they drastically cut down seating at the main stage and we missed what turned out to be the last opportunity to see his great quartet. We sadly checked into our hotel and caught the live stream. During that live stream was the first time I felt my daughter move in the womb. We did catch the set from the live record two days later, though, so I can tell my daughter she heard Wayne in person.
  7. This is on the way from eBay. I paid $10.70 after tax and shipping...for a copy signed by Milt Hinton, Jay McShann, Buddy Tate and Rufus Reid.
  8. A couple of years ago, I found the ten-disc Kaz box for less than $40. What a treasure trove!
  9. I found a three-disc lot of signed Sheila Jordan CDs for $15 and this is the first one up. I missed her by one day in New York in December and mixed up my times and missed her at the Detroit Jazz Fest in 2018 or 2019. Despite my unfortunately poor timing on rhose two occasions, I did manage to catch a delightful talk and set wth her and Cameron Brown maybe 8 years ago. She lit up the room (well, outdoor tent).
  10. I caught the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble last night. I'd never heard Corey Wilkes live before and only have one of his albums, but he has such a pretty tone. The gig was at an old church and I think the only amplification was on El'Zabar's kalimba. It was a good night.
  11. I like this and the other Harper Brothers album I have, so I'll play it soon. Stephen Scott was such a busy player in the '90s and '00s; I wish that he were still as active now.
  12. Well, now that I know of a glaring gap, I couldn't let that stand. I couldn't find the 'Best of' set of 4 discs, but I did grab the truncated 'Real' set of 3 discs for $9 (including shipping!) to give me a taste until the Mosaic pops up for a price I can handle. Although I hate to buy material that I know will later be duplicated, at least the set has those rehearsal takes (not like I could ever hope to be a Duke completist).
  13. I saw the Capitol Mosaic, minus the box and giant book, for under $60 on Discogs and pounced on it. I think that I only own Piano Reflections, which I love. I've got it good and that ain't bad.
  14. I picked this up on a trip to New York last month, the day before seeing the great Louis Hayes, who is the drummer on most of the tracks. Ha. I've always told her who we're listening to and she has her favorites. She started requesting Sonny Stitt and Joe Pass when she was 3. It's a point of pride that she attended concerts by Lee Konitz, Wayne Shorter, Larry Willis, Jack DeJohnette and others while still in the womb.
  15. During 'Echoes of Harlem', I asked my daughter who we were listening to and she said she didn't know. I pointed out the plunger-muted trumpet and asked who used the 'wah-wah' trumpet a lot. She said, 'Duke.' She turns 5 next week.
  16. I've meant to grab this one for probably 10+ years, but he did this one for Blue Note as well. The band includes Dave Liebman, Ricky Ford, Lance Bryant, Jimmy Owens, George Cables and Santi Debriano.
  17. After listening to the RCA box a few times recently and the Early Ellington box yesterday, this one was up.
  18. In the mood to hear some Antonio Sanchez, I started playing this and discovered that Gary Burton is 80 today!
  19. I bought this years ago when it was on last chance.
  20. I'm nearing the end of my third listen of this in about two weeks.
  21. I stopped in Half Price Books for the first time in years and found this. For as much as I love the Detroit pianists and Barry Harris, this is only my second leader date of his. As is to be expected from Harris and the Maybeck series, it is excellent.
  22. I discovered him via the excellent Lalo Schifrin & Friends and then went on to check out some of his work with Chico Hamilton. He really hit the ground running and had a heck of a career. Thank you for the music, Mr. Budimir, and rest in peace.
  23. Okay, so below I've listed what I have. Any thoughts on what I should be next? I'm a Joe Pass fan, so Duke's Big Four is a must. I don't know how the other Duke Mosaic of early material rates compared to what I already have if I were able to find it. I also don't know what more Blanton material I should get, although the Fargo material is likely. 24. The campaign refers to neurological issues. It sounds similar to when my wife herniated a disc during labor 5 years ago and ended up with a pinched nerve. In fact, her only lingering symptom still is numbness in part of her foot.
