  1. I found a signed copy of this on eBay last year while I was checking out more Nestico.
  2. I've seen many pictures of Sammy Nestico with a huge, radiant smile on his face. It's not surprising that his arrangements have an easygoing, joyful quality to them. Thank you for the music, Mr. Nestico, and rest in peace.
  3. I just found out that Mike Grey died in 2017.
  4. Johnny Griffin with Junior Mance, Wilbur Ware and Buddy Smith. Highly recommended.
  5. I'm listening to the Saturday set again. If we consider Kenny Burrell to be retired from performing (although I hope that he returns!), I'd consider Malone to be the greatest active straight-ahead guitarist.
  6. I know that Jim Alfredson has been largely absent lately. It's unfortunate that you've chosen to take advantage of that, in my opinion.
  7. To my knowledge, I have never heard her. However, I don't believe we have ever had a thread before about a musician or vocalist in the miscellaneous section because their work was deemed unfit for the 'Artists' heading. Jim, you also made a dig at her in an unrelated thread. Don't think that the deliberate misspelling of her name went unnoticed, either. At this point, you're just being contentious and classless because you can be.
  8. I saw this lineup playing this material, minus Wolf, whose wife was giving birth.
  9. There is some fine Ellis Marsalis here.
  10. A loose trumpet/bass/drums date with string quartet added on some tracks. Worth checking out.
  11. What a musician! I saw him three times and each time was memorable. The first was as part of a three-baritone tribute to Pepper Adams with Gary Smulyan amd Frank Basile. The second was as part of Paul Winter's sextet with Marvin Stamm, Warren Bernhardt, Cecil McBee and Jamey Haddad. The last time I saw him, he was the featured artist at a festival playing with faculty. It was the only time I saw him play tuba. I remember him playing 'Caravan' on tuba and 'Sophisticated Lady' on baritone. Besides those live experiences, he is on perhaps my favorite Ansrew Hill album, Passing Ships. The two Gravity albums I have are great fun. Thank you for the music, Mr. Johnson, and rest in peace.
  12. In April, Kelly will have been gone 50 years.
  13. Idris Muhammad is soooooooo damn funky on this one. the organist, Ronnie Foster, came to Cleveland a few years ago and I was out of town for a family wedding.
  14. Thanks. I didn't know about that one. I need more Black and Blue albums in my life.
  15. I like it a lot. Stephens plays tenor, bari and soprano and is joined by Walter Smith III on tenor. Despite the frontline, it doesn't feel like a saxophone battle. Stephens lets his big, round speak for itself and the arrangements are thoughtful and varied, aided by a well-matched group of contemporaries. Regarding other recommendations, I also heartily recommend Kenny Barron's Concentric Circles, although I suspect that you probably already have it. I've seen Stephens with both Barron and Al Foster, which says something about him. Incidentally, he overcame health problems and received a kidney transplant several years ago.
  16. I know this is a thread about BJP, but Cliff Smalls was a fine pianist, by the way. I really like his only solo recordings on the Master Jazz Mosaic and an Oliver Jackson trio date on Black and Blue.
  17. Patton plays piano on 'Cowbell Boogie' from Blue Note's The Lost Sessions, but I doubt that that track is indicative of his usual piano style. It's a fun track from a fascinating compilation, though.
  18. What a history! Your family must be very proud. I've heard your grandfather a lot with Cab Calloway on the wonderful Chu Berry Mosaic. Did he ever talk about Berry, Dizzy or Calloway?
