  1. thanks; I like to keep it surreal. I should also mention that I plan, by the end of the year, to start a little music history blog with all kinds of samples. Will keep you posted.
  2. the boxes I was referring to: http://www.amazon.com/Best-Hot-Five-Seven-Recordings/dp/B0026OIBK4/ref=sr_1_22?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1352713870&sr=1-22&keywords=louis+armstrong
  3. don't you guys know that Tad - (can't think of his last name), from Rutgers, has written a terrific bio of Granz? I'll try to find the citation. here it is - excellent work: http://www.amazon.com/Norman-Granz-Used-Jazz-Justice/dp/0520267826/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1352666225&sr=8-1&keywords=norman+granz
  4. I sent this message to Ricky earlier (I don't think I am violating any confidentiality): "I am in a small minority on these, but I actually prefer those old Columbia/Armstrong CDs to the later box reissue - I find the box dry and lacking resonance (and Weatherbird has a large CEDAR glitch at the beginning) - whereas with the old CDs, if one re-eqs them and digitally pitch-corrects, can be brought to terrific life - of course one needs good eq software (I also have CEDAR) - but when I have some time I can do some A-B ing (which I also, btw, was able to do with the original Morton/BMG box that was so reviled; even Larry Gushee was impressed) "
  5. well, I try to keep everybody happy. If that takes alienating half the country, well, I do it for the good of humanity. As Mitt Romney's wife told the press, she said to him before the election: "Can you save America?" I am trying.
  6. thanks guys, nice to hear - and don't worry, I have myself on my own "ignore" list (metaphysically speaking) -
  7. well, at least he didn't want to call it MY DING.
  8. haven't listened to the Capitols in a long time; will have to pull 'em out. just a note, if you can find it, dig out Dick Katz's article on Tatum's version of Too Marvelous For Worlds (I think from the Heindorf sessions); IIRC the essay is on some Smithsonian thing. Best thing written on Tatum.
  9. God is in the House is great; if you've got the Heindorf, I honestly don't think you need anything else. as for the Storyville, they've used too much noise reduction in the most recent ones, so find alternatives if you can -
  10. there's that party thing from Hollywood, probably the best thing around; don't know if it's still in print.
  11. jeez; he called me about 2-3 years ago when he had hip replacement. He may be the youngest old guy ever.

well, you don't see Tim Horton suing, do you? Or Bill Macy; J.C. Penny; Duncan Donut; or Uncle Ben and Aunt Jemimah?
  13. garrison was also in that Bill Evans/Tony Scott band that had some bootlegs.

    Cecil McBee

he actually has a summer place in Maine. I've heard he's a good guy, but he has created some bad feeling up here by failing to even respond to requests to talk about performing. There ain't much jazz here but there are a few organizations that do music and that he has snubbed over the years, don't know why.
  15. "it's not dead it just smells funny" ? maybe.
  16. that Bird and Beckett place is around the corner from where my niece lives, David. She's been trying to get me to come out there to play.
  17. cd; has a few scuffs, plays nicely; this is getting pricey elsewhere - $26 shipped USA; $35 to Europe my paypal is alowe5@maine.rr.com
  18. took the words right outta my mouth, Harold. Think: New York is Now.
  19. could be; and I have had nights when there were more musicians on the stand than people in the audience.
  20. actually, this saved my dog's life the other night when he ran into the road - they could see him for miles, and all the cars stopped.
  21. "I don't need to go listen to Ron Carter's booming bass" - Dick Katz to me about 20 years ago on why he didn't go over to Bradley's (which was near his apartment) to listen to a group that was playing there.
  22. I don't really know WHO the core audience is; but I do believe it is out there. There is too much jazz being played in too many places for it to be non-existent.
  23. I'm amazed that his estate is only valued at $50,000.
  24. well, I do disagree. Because the what of this music is tied in so inextricably to the where, when, and how (and the I WANT IT).
