  1. If I heard that blind, I would have thought it was Helen Merril.
  2. hey Deeley - keep it under your hat but we may make it to Philly sometime next Fall to do the blues program - working on something -
  3. strangest thing that ever happened to me, about 20 years ago I had to call the office of the Princeton department of music - well, Milton Babbit picked up the phone. I was a bit flustered. nice man.I think he even took a message for someone.
  4. this confirms my impression that Larry Kart's identity isn't real, but actually a composite of several early jazz critics with CIA ties.
  5. just read a review which mentioned "Roger Bresnahan" - related to Kevin?
  6. it's ok if they don't want to talk about the old days - if this project ever happens (and I give it only 50-50) it won't really matter.
  7. I've got an idea! to save Stereo Jack's, let's all get together and put on a show -
  8. Irving Ayler? (Albert's 3rd cousin, presided over his Bar Mitvah)
  9. yeah, Koglmann. Too young.
  10. thanks guys - but maybe I should have asked about who's NOT still alive. drawing a blank, who's that Austrian trumpeter who recorded for hat Art?
  11. to digress, but anyone know how to reach Jason Weiss?
  12. I didn't realize there were that many people left - next we'll do Confederate Widows.
  13. theoretically yes, but probably not for this project (not trying to be evasive, but I don't think Baraka would work) -
  14. sort of on the cusp - though more and more I'm thinking that this thing should combine years, first and second generation of this whole school (adding, for example BAG) -
  15. allright, long story short, I may be doing a project on '60s free jazz, sort of the ESP generation. can you name some of those people who are still around and reachable (well, still around, anyway)? off the top of my head, Ros Rudd, Paul Bley, Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor....Carla Bley. Annette Peacock....Gary Peacock, Steve Swallow.....Henry Grimes......Giuseppi Logan...Shepp - give me a few, if you don't mind, because I have a major-sized headache this morning. I appreciate it.....
  16. I would go with Cadence North Country, and support a company that has always supported independent musicians.
  17. here's a link at Cadence North Country, containing their FMP titles (there are 2 pages): http://db.cadencebui...n&Search=Search
  18. I can't get anyone in the Middle East to ship me plutonium anymore.
  19. I'm distraught - best record store ever, without you guys I could never have done any of my projects - I spoke to Matt as soon as I heard - gotta make sure I make at least one last trip. also, let me mention that I have sold stuff to many many stores over the years, and the only one that I ever felt gave hones prices and appraisals was Jack's.
  20. actully, thanks to Tom Marcello here, I am in pretty good shape now for contacts - and, honestly, I wouldn't give Yanow 10 cents for the Buddy Bolden cylinder. But we won't get into that now -
  21. if you can find them there are wonderful old films of Merce Cunningham's dance performances (I saw them in the middle 1970s). Incredible stuff.
  22. probably not a good idea - let's just say that we have......creative differences.....
  23. I liked the Monk book because, for once, a jazz bio was approached with the discipline and reach of a (good) literary biography. HOWEVER - I do know that Larry Kart had some reservations about the biij, though I've never heard specifics from him. LARRY! you out there? btw I love Babs' singing - Joe Albany told me to listen to him; Joe thought Babs was the hippest guy around.
