never heard this recording. -
Schlitten was always extremely careful and ethical about material he issued and reissued, and I'm sure that Monterose agreed to the Xanadu edition - after all it's not like it was going to sell a lot of copies, even (or especially) back then -

margaret......margaret..... MARGARET! where did you go Margaret? I thought we had a dialog going... could it be.....could it be....that you only show up when Henry has a gig? Or is that just a strange coincidence? -

my issue isn't chord changes or not - what I said above was my general impression. Not bad, just.....in-between. Extremely interesting musically at times, though it's like a slightly non-linear echo of his former self. I figure if the Constitution doesn't work, here's the Magna Carta: http://en.wikipedia....iki/Magna_Carta also, the 10 Commandments: http://en.wikipedia....en_Commandments and, Who's on First?: http://www.baseball-...om/humor4.shtml and we'll finish off with the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010_swimsuit/ -

maybe I could write a good musical analysis? Thank you, Margaret, for that sarcastic and passive aggressive response to a reasonable question. I'm sure you are aware of my work, as well. Though I do wonder about YOUR musical qualifications: How many gigs have YOU played? Sure glad you could pop in here on a few threads to offer us a few plugs. See you in six months. (and personally what little I've heard of Grimes' playing seems interesting but strangely random at times; more the memory of a great bassist than great playing. A reasonable response to his current life). and since I know that Margaret won't like my comments, and will respond in a regressive and repressive manor, let me post a link to a nice little article that explains the First Amendment: http://en.wikipedia....es_Constitution -

just make sure they put something in writing this time - because the moral of the story is: WRITE YOUR WILL. -

don't know if this is the right place to post, but listening to Roscoe Mitchell, Old/Quartet sessions and loving it, wow; also incredibly good sound. Get this one if you don't have it already. -

uh oh - you can't say anything bad about Getz. His daughter doesn't like it. -

I've hesitated to wade into this whole thing, but I admire Randy and I agree with much of what I've read that he's written - I have to get to Ethan's blog for more detail. -
Big Band Drummer (and Comedian) Charlie Callas dies
AllenLowe replied to Bright Moments's topic in Artists
true story: years ago (mid 1970s)a friend of mine, who lived in Boston and went to B.U., introduced me to his roomate. Nice enough guy, but HE NEVER SAID A WORD.Quietest person I ever met. 2 or three times we were together, HE NEVER SAID A WORD. turns out - he was the son of Charlie Callas. The way my friend described it, he was so cowed by the old man, who was always "on," that he went the opposite way. -
John Szwed on Alan Lomax
AllenLowe replied to AllenLowe's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
absolutely - though when someone asks me I always recommend that they at least try a names index, which is relatively easy to do and at least helps connect certain things. the editing thing is really discouraging - that book The Warmth of Other Sons is a very interesting and a potentially important work - but I threw it down (though I'll probably pick it up again; I just feel like I'm editing in my head and doing the work the publisher and author should have done) - -
it's a friggin Jonestown over there -

my new web site
AllenLowe replied to AllenLowe's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
thanks - I need to work on making clear who is on what recording, though it'll be about a week or two before I get into it - there's also a sampling of the new CD blues set (Blues and the Empiricle Truth). -
just launched the new www.allenlowe.com http://www.allenlowe.com/ the site includes sound samples of recordings I've done with Julius Hemphill, Roswell Rudd, Marc Ribot, David Murray, Loren Schoenberg, Don Byron, Doc Cheatham, Lewis Porter, and others. it still needs some work, but my developer, the wonderful Ken Feldman, has done a terrific job. it also contains some book samples.

John Szwed on Alan Lomax
AllenLowe replied to AllenLowe's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I've heard accounts of writers handing in books to major presses, and being told that, if they wanted an index, they had to either do it themselves or pay someone to do it. And recently I read one of the most highly touted books of the year (The Warmth of Other Suns) and found it to need a major edit - many many grammatical errors, repetitions. etc etc. Almost to the point of being unreadable. and I know from my own projects how easy it is to miss very simple things in the mass of detail required. And though I'm sure the Lomax book is from a major press (can't remember which one) I'm willing to bet it was largely a solo effort. -

see my first post. not to be too glib, but in the brave new world of publishing and recording, everything is a one-man job: writing, editing, indexes, discographies, promotion and distribution (well the last two sometimes require assistance) - -
they probably got most of their stuff on buying trips from Stereo Jack.

John Szwed on Alan Lomax
AllenLowe replied to AllenLowe's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
so far so good, I think. He definitely gets all sides of the family. -
I'm in the middle of reading Szwed's new book on Alan Lomax, and it is John's usual brilliant work. There a review in today's Times by Janet Maslin, who is generally positive but who continues to prove she's an idiot. Her complaint, in a work like this, about a lack of discography (and people have made the same complaint about my projects) reminds me of the old Henny Youngman joke: A little kid is drowning in the ocean. 15 lifeguards swim out to save him, risking their own lives. They make it back to shore, work 20 minutes to revive the kid – and the kid’s alive and breathing and fine. His mother comes over and says “he had a hat.”
