I like that - reminds me of years ago, there was a jazz station they started in Stamford Connecticut; as time went on the station got more and more commerical and "smooth" jazz oriented, until one day a memo circulated telling djs that they were not to play anythings that had "excessive improvisation."

cliff, if I read you right, than I may disagree - see my post with the incorrect stationary. been doing some recording with Matt Shipp and, interestingly enough, on the more "inside" material he shows a marked Ran Blake influence - and though it's difficult to use these ideas in a group format, it can be done with the right players. It takes musicians who don't mind, in effect, stopping and starting, using the material as a kind of re-write format. It's very effective when done right and also a very radical way to re-work standard material. To my way of thinking this is one very significant aesthetic solution do making older (or older-style) compositions fresher and even new again.

I just thought that if you're a sideman it behooves you to check with the leader about dress - they bass player I mentioned (and this was at the old West End Cafe) was just so apart from the group that I felt he was out of line (funny I can't remember his name but he was pretty well known in NYC at the time - John something maybe, as I recall he worked with Getz) -

is that how? I thought the best way was to annoy the crap out of first the moderators and then Chuck Nessa, and then post pictures of bestiality. usually works for me.......

someone who can set up musical files for paid download on a web site - also, if anyone has a server that's cheaper than the one I'm using now ($119/year) would be interested as well

yes, Lester was an alcoholic, but to continue the circle (see Seeline, above) this wasn't a blackout situation - and his "spaciness" wasn't an alcoholic condition but his personality. And he knew the rest of the band (because they were more familiar to him as his regular band) - more than anything else, with these guys, is the SOCIAL stuff, which fits the condition like a glove. and lets face it, all jazz musicians are weirdos -
-
whatever the cause, Lester definitley resided in the land of gone-zo. Triglia told me that they had a tour they went to by plane - Prez had hired a bass player he liked very much, but the base player sent a sub - they all met at the airport, got on the plane, the whole time Prez didn't seem to notice the bass player was a different guy - hours later they went to the first gig and started to play - Prez hears the bass, turns around and says, "hey, you're not the guy I hired." interesting, first, as a funny story - BUT - and this is also interesting to me - people with this condition have a lot of trouble remembering faces, in recognizing people on sight. And Prez had spent a whole day with this guy... just a possibility, I know.

"Your mention of Lester Young wearing bedroom slippers to a session could be "about" any number of things, from what you suggested to foot pain to him feeling more comfortable in slippers and not caring if anyone thought it was odd to... " well, yes and no - because it becomes part of an evidentary trail - so, if you have a particular condition, and a person who exhibits many of the other traits (social, artistic) of that condition; AND than he exhibits other traits of that condition (in this case possible sensory defensiveness) - thank it becomes a lot more than just a wild shot in the dark, but rather of assembling logical bits and pieces. And I will tell you, all accounts of Young that I have (including very detailed personal stuff from one of his pianists, Bill Triglia) point to his having some kind of Aspergers/PDD - it's like the arguments about musical sources and Africa - someone points out that call in response exists not only in African music but it English music - but THAN - we see a large population who come out of Africa - well, than one has to use certain logic. Coincidence can only take us so far - and talk to Peter Muir, who sees patients like this every day. Also, talk to people who knew Bud Powell. It's just too obvious to ignore.

Tom Wilson and the Transition Records Story
AllenLowe replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
thanks, guess I have more of that stuff than I know. There's more on Wilson in Greil Marcus' book about the song Like a Rolling Stone - also there's something somewhere of Eric Burdon talking about him -- 56 replies

it depends - I remember going in the late 1970s to see Joe Albany; most of the band was casual/neat, but the bass player (great musician, can't remember his name) showed up looking quite slobby. I thought this was extremely inconsiderate since it was someone else's gig. on the other hand I remember that topless cellist who was around in the 1960s -

Royal Oak - I'm grateful to ANYONE here who agrees with me on anything. I LOVE van heusen -
Newbury is excellent - I'm surprised that they're not afraid to send orders out to Philly, what with all the former Nigerian princes living out there -

I am getting ready to try and book a new performance project (with Matt Shipp) for 2010 and, since I've been out of things so long, was wondering if people here can suggest festivals that they know of, which can be mainstream or not (this project will fit pretty much anywhere). Hopefully they are fests with some booking accessibility - meaning that the administration might actually respond to unsolicited proposals. would also be interested in localized performance spaces that might be amenable. the project, which I am still setting up and composing for, is basically one of finding new settings for the blues (working title, if you promise not to steal it: Blues and the Empirical Truth) - there may be one more interesting addition to the group, though I cannot yet say who that might be.

just be aware, I had a problem with Import Cds - they agreed to take something back, received it, and than just kept giving me form email responses instead of crediting my account - finally I used a reverse directory and tracked them down to some other business - none of it sounded real Kosher, but I did, after about 3 days, get some guy to refund my money (he was a littled troubled that I was able to track him down). But I would tend to avoid them in the future - they are fine and fast UNTIL you need your money back.

well, unless they have telepathic powers, anyone is speculating, even in the presence of the subject. But I have no need to project, this is just recognition of a relatively common syndrome. Also, ask Peter Muir, a musicologist and psychologist who works with Aspergers/autism patients, who agrees with me on this. on the other hand, I do get the impression that Monk was over-medicated, which complicates things immensely. These diagnoses were not made much in those days; another problem is self-medication, as people with these conditions are often insomniacs with a tendency to be over-tired - leading to certain kinds of substance issues. unless he was schizophrenic - which would make it Music Plus One

how dare he call me decent? well, it did feel like the damnation of faint praise - especially when that particular band got raves (played Sweet Basil in NYC) and the prior CD by the same group was named one of the top releases of the year by the National Assoc. of Independent Record Distributors. also, I did record it with a broken finger - hurt like an sob.
