  1. they're all worn out after coming to see us at Dizzy's.
  2. just a historical note, though I think it's important - according to what Bley told me (and he may have also discussed this in his autobio) the whole thing gradually fell apart due, in large part, to Shepp's contract to record for Impulse. This pulled him out of the organization, and there was a lot of jealousy, people saying he was 'selling out." Paul's feeling was 'why shouldn't he take the opportunity?"
  3. I assume the Jaki Byard disc is out. Or him paying me the $300 he owes me.
  4. sorry, I meant Mantan Moreland.
  5. yes, all sorts of Jewish mysticism; also took rides on alien spacecraft.
  6. oh yes. heavy stuff.
  7. thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou and really, the reason I don't like Grace Kelly's playing is because it isn't good. Subjectively, objectively, generically, phonetically, and hysterically speaking. And I say this is as a white Jewish Presbyterian she-male with homophobic tendencies.
  8. no, not of everybody; the following saxophonists soloed brilliantly in their youth: Jackie McLean, Ernie Henry, Sonny Rollins, Lester Young, Phil Woods, Charlie Parker, Charles McPhersone, Gene Quill, Dave Schildkraut, Casey Knudsen, Lisa Parrott, Nicole Glover, Mantana Roberts, Darius Jones - should I go on? Every one of the last bunch, contemporaries of hers, are far superior to Grace Kelly as a soloist - EVERY one. It is not even close. Really.
  9. Jim is exactly right about her. At her best, she knows how to play, but is and was an extremely shallow soloist. It's the quality of her ideas which is lacking.
  10. is the Teddy Wilson still going to come out?
  11. Sunenblick also had, for a long time, early Jaki Byard. He never put it our because he didn't feel like there was enough material, which is stupid because with Jaki who cares? There is basically no other early Byard material. Would kill for that. As for the Prez, get me a master and I'll put it out. It's incredibly cheap to replicate CDs these days. Put the notes on line, and replicating 4 volumes would be about $1200. Buy digipaks ($.90 a piece), put 'em in and sell the set for $30 - sell about 40-50 and you've made your money back.
  12. even when she just plays, I don't think there's much there.
  13. I hear ya. Was gonna come to your birthday party but I'm on the "do not let have fun" list -
  14. awright don't take it all so personally; just wait until about 30 of you post about how much you enjoyed the Vision Fest. And I don't snark; I am very direct. And I did not leave here for lack of support but because of my deep sensitivity to imagined insult.
  15. I hope you all enjoy the Vision Festival, my vision was the full house at Dizzy's on Tuesday night - and thanks to Cliff -
  16. Thanks, good point; afterwards we plan on going up to 125th St. and hanging out.
  17. Feel free to throw things at the screen. Sorry, riding on the train, may have put this in the wrong place.
  18. Just to let everybody know, we will be streaming live on Tuesday night February 20 from Dizzys.
  19. just to note, for sound geeks; re: the Columbia CD Basie reissue with notes by Loren Schoenberg: the notes are terrific, as usual for Loren, but the sound, really, is not as good as the earlier CD issue. I think its the transfers, not the restoration - and that Super Chief LP has some of the best sound of all.
