  1. I saw that basic band at Slug's in '69, with Haden on bass and Billy Higgins. It's so deeply etched in my memory, a very formative experience, particularly for Haden having sat with us between sets and explained the music.
  2. just a thought; I don't really believe it's particularly expensive to create a new CD master for manufacture. I doubt if it's over $200-$300, but I could be wrong.

  8. I refuse to buy CDRs, and always return 'em if they are not advertised as such. A few things to note: 1) these labels - and now we talking about Document, Acrobat, and Jasmine, at the minimum - use cheap, crappy CDRs. I used to do a lot of transfers and I can tell by looking at them how cheap they are. They will not last - 2) the transfers to CDR that I have heard are often not straight digital wave transfers but clearly cheap MP3s; the sonics suffer because they are saving storage and compressing things very often. I would not only avoid them, but I would tell these labels why you are doing so. I have -

  14. Larry, if it's not too late, I DO know a guy who is a fact checker for the New Yorker. Would be happy to forward your original observations on this thread.

  17. I can read lips; he's saying: "F**K Blue Note."
  18. yes, they are actually all taped.
  19. well, I just read the ENTIRE passage online, and your characterization of it is not only misleading, but destructively so. Yes, he was surprised, but mentions that, just beforehand, she had given him the option to cut it off if he wanted to. He did not, and clearly appears to be RELIEVED that it was finally out in the open. And he in NO WAY feels Terry was out of line in asking him about it. You imply that it was typical of her supposed lack of tact; it was nothing of the sort. Maybe you need to re-read it. here it is: https://books.google.com/books?id=AQhrAAAAQBAJ&q=Terry+Gross#v=snippet&q=Terry%20Gross&f=false
  20. just talked to Terry (and Francis) and they were both surprised at your interpretation of Burton's reaction to the discussion of his sexual orientation. She had said prior to the interview that if there was anything he did not want to discuss she would not discuss it, and he did not object in the interview itself. I have not read the passage in his book, but my sense of the way the interview is described on Amazon is that he was somewhat surprised but quite ready to come out. Also, from what I know about her and that show, if he had said, at the time, that he did not want to discuss it, she would not have it. Also, not long afterwards, Burton appeared on a panel with Francis at the Village Vanguard that was about gay jazz musicians. He knew Francis was married to Terry and indicated no discomfort (and of course agreed to appear on the panel). As for her interviewing style, it is completely unfair to accuse her of tending to get too personal. The 'getcha' style of interview is just not Terry.
  21. I would have to ask Terry about the Gary Burton claim; that just does not sound like her. Yes, she asks personal questions, but of people who have gone pubic with personal issues. But I am intrigued by the accusation.
  22. in reply to SGCIM, Terry is very knowledgeable about jazz, is married to Francis Davis, one of our finest writers on jazz, and is one of the best interviewers in the business. As for Buell's response, I would rather listen to it, but the question is much more nuanced than his response allows. As a musician, I know exactly what she is getting at.
  23. I'd be happy to sell you my mint copy of the Mosaic Bill Barron ("The Incomplete Sessions;" or is it "The Uncompleted Sessions"? Or maybe it's "The Jeff Sessions.") $10,000 but I'll throw in free shipping (media, of course).
