Black Gospel Music Restoration Project
AllenLowe replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm wondering, because there are TONS of recordings from that period of gospel that are preserverd, lots of commerical issues - of course, gospel music means many things - primarily, in the commercial sense, it indicates secular versions of religious music, and there's quartet gospel, congregational, streetcorner, guitar evangelist gospel - not trying to be a wise-asss but I wonder how he covers it all and how he defines the segments,as I personally have MANY cds from that era - also there's lots of southern white gospel (much more poorly documented in the classic sense than African American gospel) - will have to check this guy out - -

I'm curious; what do you guitar players out there
AllenLowe replied to Jazzmoose's topic in Musician's Forum
actually, though I hate acoustic guitars, I think good tone is good tone - Danos used to be made out of masonite, and they sounded great; Reverend makes 'em out of something odd, too, I think, and they sound great - as long as wood is reasonably resonant it's probably ok; still, I don't like 'em unless they have pickups on them - -
and you guys are gonna be sorry that I had to cancel the stripper - she drools a little, but she's pretty hot -
-
not necessarily - it's the old bugaboo of administrative costs, which weigh down many organizations - it's all in the realm of budget and execution which, if done right, can leave plenty of room for money back into the Board - but there's more to it, in my opinion - I see the Conference, in my(and I think Jim's, but he may disagree) original conception as a sort of consciousness raising about Organissimo, both the band and the web site and the larger state of jazz - SO - even if the conference is not a money maker, it's a way of looking ahead, of recruiting new members, new donations, etc - it's a little along the line of, even if it ain't broke, you have to look ahead to a time when things slow down, when new energy and commitment is needed. For a musician, it's always time to think a year or two ahead - just my (admittedly minority) opinion -
-
just want to add, to show I am not totally delusional, that the original idea of this WAS quite different than the currently developing concept - in the first post that Jim made, suggesting it, he compared his idea to the Tape Op conference -which is much more in line with the things I was originally proposing here - a real conference with themes, talks, organizational purpose, etc etc - I still think this would be a much more interesting idea, especially given the almost complete corporatization of the jazz world - won't happen, however, from what I can determine here -
-
and since I can't give up anything completely, I will add that it would be preferable to me, whichever way this event goes (if it goes) that it not be just another gig - I just think, given the wide range of interesting people and musicians assembled here, given the brains and the talent, given the possible locale of Chicago (a hipper town than any place I have lived recently) that we attempt to make it just a little bit more interesting and a little less jazz-provincial. but that's just my opinion - Jim, what do you think? I'm getting lonely...

Study reveals why monkeys shout
AllenLowe replied to MoGrubb's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I love it when she talks monkey - -
it is interesting because a brief perusal of internet hits finds much admiration for her as a teacher and as a person - I just recall my friend (a brilliant jazz pianist, not especially well known but I don't want to mention his name without his permission, and he now lives in Portugal), who is not Jewish, found her - 32 years ago - to have made comments that he felt were very distasteful - all I will add is that there is a lot of genteel anti-semitism that existed particularly among Eastern Europeans and Russians of that generation (I am assuming without perusing other posts here that she was Eastern European or Russian, but I may be wrong) and which Jews may be more sensitive to than non-Jews, and that relates to the whole WWII Nazi-occupation-collaboration-Stalin pact experience both as cause and effect (as in guilt, defensiveness, post-War rationale) -

who put the whiskey in the well?
-
well, normally I disagree with everybody, but I will blow any way the wind blows here, as I don't want to ask anyone to do anything that they do not want to do - sigh... I will only say that, given the state of the jazz world I saw this (as did Jim, I think) as a way, in this rapidly consolidating musical world, for independent thinkers to present a world view that stands in contrast to the usual jazz crap - and I will avoid being specific just because I think each of us can think of one aspect of the jazz world that has basically turned to crap, even, to my way of seeing things, some of the better and potentially more serious approaches have been eroded by conventional ways of doing things, conventional wisdom, conventional approaches - but, obviously it's an idea that works only in my head, so I suppose it will stay there - surrounded by lots of other lonely and impractical ideas - so, let's start over - should this, if it exists, be strictly a social/musical event? Should I quit now while I'm behind? As Mussolini said, I bow to the will of the people (as long as my kid gets to play in the rhythm section) -

"We don't need conference rooms and panel discussions or vendor tables. We need a cash bar and a stage for any musicians who want to jam." let me add, sorry, but the whole purpose of what we're proposing is the opposite of the above, which is the usual b.s. - it's not worth my while traveling 1000 miles just to be more background music - you're right, for that you can stay home -
-
"what, aside from seeing your pretty face, is the difference between discussing these topics in person and discussing them on the board?" yikes, I give up, I see why Jim got so frustrated with this crew- please resume watching television -

"Not sure what the discussion panel would be for, or if it would be of interest. Is it related to Organissimo, the band? Organissimo the board? Jazz in general? Not sure I get the point. I wouldn't mind making a trek to the Jazz Record Mart or something, but I'm also not sure trying to put together some sort of "record convention" at the O-show would be worth it either." sorry, this first part makes little sense - if 200 people per day read this site and/or post here, about one discussion topic after another, why is it hard to "get the point" about panel discussions at a conference? We have some great minds here - the idea of direct and personal inter-action ought to have strong appeal - if it doesn't, you;re in the wrong place. as for a "record convention," well, we have a group here who spend a good portion of their lives at stores and on the internet in order to satisfy musical cravings related to vinyl and CD - so it's a bad idea to bring it to them instead of vice versa? sorry if I seem crabby, but it's always real easy to sit back and decide everything's a bad idea - but we have a tendency as 'collectors' to forget there's a big world out there - here's a chance to actually engage with that world -
