  1. hm, Yoshi's? isn't that where they hold the White Citizens Council meetings? just kidding, guys - trying to remain semi-civilized - and thanks for all the suggestions -
  2. actually, Wynton knows - because he was told by a guy who was told by a guy whose aunt knew a guy who once talked to a guy who once heard a rumor from a guy who overheard two guys who had been told by a priest who had learned from a nun who'd heard on the street from several fellas who were informed by a different guy who had been advised by a few people who were thinking they heard from several different sources who knew second-hand and who had been told by their mothers that she'd heard from her first husband who had been told by his aunt whose uncle once thought he'd heard Bolden but he couldn't be sure because he was deaf in one ear - at least that's what I've been told -
  3. also wondering if anyone has any contact info for Ben Goldberg - phone and/or email -
  4. what I'm waiting for is the restoration of Bird's appearance on Ed Sullivan - the one where he backs Elvis on Blue Suede Shoes - anybody have a clip of that one?
  5. Cantor's the one - nice guy, besides -
  6. I will be in San Francisco from December 29-January 5 for my nephew's wedding, but will have some free time - was wondering if anyone can recommend: 1) good, out of the way places to hear music - 2) places/performance centers to drop my CD and promo stuff (wrapped in a rock, of course) 3) good record/CD stores 4) good places to look at old crappy guitars and amps -
  7. I like Terry on those "live" Dinah Washington records - still young and hungry-sounding -
  8. well, ok, I guess he DOES live in a cold place -
  9. as long as we've got it going, how is Freddie Redd these days?
  10. hey, that same Jimmy Rodgers (not to be confused with the Singing Brakeman) gave us memorable versoins of Kisses Sweeter than Wine and the theme song on the old commercial for Spaghetti-os ("Uh oh, Spaghetti-oh's") - so let's have a little respect -
  11. sorry, but nobody gets to blow my ass unless they give me flowers and take me out to dinner first - and I don't care how many copies of Opus Caprice they own -
  12. well, it's ok with me if Jim uses the money for real necessities - but I do have a problem with that fur sink he bought for his wife -
  13. great film - the director, Michael Roemer, also made an excellent movie called "The Plot Against Harry," about a Jewish mobster - interesting guy, I met him when I was in school circa 1979 -
  14. good story - how is Leroy these days?
  15. how about a poem: "Frank O'hara get up out of that sand dune" -
  16. Terry can play, but I'm with Larry on this issue of coasting and shallowness - and it ain't race, as Larry knows - about 25 years ago I ran into a well known (African American) pianist on the street in front of a club where he was playing with Terry's group - I asked him how he liked the gig - he said: "He can play when he wants to, but he's still doing that damn 'Secret Love.' "
  17. we can use the money for an Organissimo Fuel Assistance Program, especially since Hugo Chavez won't return my calls; slogan: "help keep jazz musicians warm." We'll start with the letters A-L; well, guys, the line forms right behind me - hey, Kart, get lost; you have to know how to play an instrument -
  18. Miles Davis praised North, as I recall -
  19. that's probably true - my complaint is that they have not re-evaluated basic musical techniques and approaches - it's the same for a lot of Indie rockers who don't grasp that to re-define a form - rock, country, jazz etc - you have to grapple with the elements of that form - songs, music, lyrics, scales, song form, et all - and re-do them somehow. This has been done, but rarely, to my taste, in an interesting way.
  20. I wanna know how many checks bounce -
  21. I don't like Lucinda W - a little narcississtic for my taste - (sorry, I have no idea how to spell that word) - I wish alt country was truly alt, and not just the same old country stuff dressed up in shiny digital clothing - I'm thinking, like, Kelly Harrell meets Johnny Cash meets Frank Hutchison meets Bo Diddley meets Air meets Eric Dolphy meets Howling Wolf meets me -
  22. many years ago (in the 1960s) Richard Gilman, who was a theater critic, wrote, essentially, that if some cultural thing was written about in the NY Times, you could be sure it had already passed its moment of impact - this was true than and it's true now -
  23. I got one saying I was a boob, and another saying my kid got herpes from some mohel -
  24. actually, I did once suggest that they should put prozac in every city's drinking water - might just be happening right now - of course, for me, the alternative is the Clockwork Orange method -
  25. looks like your age is the same as your number of posts -
