  1. he probably send bills to ALL his musicians -
  2. jazz: the game for the whole family (actually, I think that's "incest")
  3. I can't give the name, but I'm absolutely certain the story is true - as I got it directly from the musician - well, everybody's got their own quirks -
  4. I'm working from memory here, but be aware that Bird didn't always play it the same way - especially the ending, as I recall -
  5. you got it - charming boy -
  6. well...there's a certain story about a bassist who was supposed to tour with Silver; Silver sent him a cassette of the music they were going to play. The bassist later had to cancel; Silver (and this is absolutely true) sent him a bill for the cassette, for about $2 -
  7. well, at least I HAVE a personality -
  8. Actually that's not bad: 1) Irving Berlin - wrote many great songs played by jazz musicians 2) Zez Confrey - excellent rag composer and pianist - as a matter of fact his 1921 recordings are almost identical in sound and feeling and swing to Eubie Blake - 3) Ferde Grofe - great arranger, wrote excellent jazz and jazz/classical pieces for Paul Whiteman 4) George Gershwin - great composer of pop songs, not to mention Concerto in F -
  9. hey, that's real clever - and gives me an excuse to bump this up -
  10. from what I know about Silver, he'll probably want to charge by the minute for anybody visiting his site -
  11. I'm going to revive this - I just saw these guys on Live at the Knitting Factory on TV - ok, but hardly earth shaking, as amatter of fact, if you've watched them for 5 minutes you've seen pretty much everything that they can do - so I checked out the reviews on their web site and was astounded at how great they are (the reviews, I mean) - I am mystified - can anyone explain this?
  12. uh oh...well, send me about $1,000 and I'll buy you one -
  13. I still see the numbers...
  14. I can see the numbers on the paintings -
  15. as I recall (and I'm not 100 percent certain) - that Yazoo has great video but very destructive noise reduction done to the sound -
  16. hey - everybody's looking, nobody's buying - what do you think this is, a library?
  17. I was about to make the exact same statement - I think Sean is a bit over-rated and self-serious -
  18. I have a lot of Miles, but don't hear any Trane in them -
  19. the book: Quintet of the Year, by Geoffrey Haydon, about the concert at Massey Hall. Paperback, in like-new condition. $8 PLUS SHIPPING. dvd: Ray Charles Live in Brazil. Still sealed. $8 plus shipping. Paypal, check, money order. Email me at alowe@maine.rr.com. My paypal address is same -
  20. I don't know about you guys but I don't like my jazz polished - I prefer it rough -
  21. mrjazzman, there's a WHOLE album of Trane with Cannonball - if you don't hear any Trane on that one, you may be listening in mono -
  22. Look, at least we all agree that Bud Powell is #1 - right Sal? (please don't poop on my post) -
  23. but, as I said, at least he included Al Haig, a central figure who is too often forgotten these days - unless he was referring to the former Nixonian -
  24. well, she was still a great jazz mind - I agree with you - and I think it's silly to rank them in order, whch makes it seem like a track event - and some of those names make NO sense, unless there has been money exchanged - I'm surprised we don't see George Winston near the top -
  25. it was a truism in the old days (I'm talking 1960s-70s-80s) that people who did home taping also spent the most money on buying music. I am not sure that this is still true (as a matter of fact I doubt it) - are there any verifiable statistics here?
