  1. actually, it's The Legend of Duluoz; I believe; the Columbia years; one of my favorites. Also - I thought Wild Bill Davison was driving the car when Teschemacher got killed -
  2. I think they're a little old to call "new generation" - Laubrock is 43; Rainey 55; Halvorson maybe 34? Tyshawn is 33; Bird was dead by all those ages; or at least, extremely tired.
  3. I saw Eager about the same time, at Newport/NYC, same basic show; he was awful. We met briefly and he was nasty. Big disappointment on both fronts.
  4. Quasi - I actually think Schildkraut sounds great on Handyland (it was Case Ace from that, that Mingus thought was Bird in that famous blindfold test); but Eager? Demoralized, to my ears.
  5. she is very very good; reminds me at times of Frank Lowe. And she plays well on Larry's clip; but there is a lack of urgency in her playing which is strangely typical of a lot of what I hear these days. But I'm of the Pee Wee Russell, 'play it like you're about to die' school; though she does perk up briefly.
  6. boyish works partially because Eager was played out by about 1954. Listen to him on the George Handy session with Schildkraut (can't thing of the album name); he sounds tired and indifferent. When I met him he was the same, though also vain and nasty.
  7. which of those are you referring to? The link brings up more than one. If it's the first one, I didn't find her solo.
  8. I would like to find a pair of speakers in the $500-$600 range that are perfectly flat and can be used for mixing - not the usual studio monitors (I hate those); just a good accurate set; I already have an incredible set, but they will be going by summer as I have donated my mixing studio; so at this point I am looking for a decent replacement. I have a feeling, however, that my price point may be impossible.
  9. thanks; yes we will record; still having trepidations about the new music, but I have learned, when in doubt, just play.
  10. I've given up on the Crouch/Bird thing; if anybody wants my copy, will sell for $10 plus shipping USA. Once I stopped reading it I couldn't start again.
  11. I listened once, said "So what?" and went on to my Acker Bilk collection.
  12. Rainey is incredible....she is good, but lacks....passion. A sense that she needs to be there. But I admire her musicianship.
  13. I will probably have a nervious breakdown trying to get ready for it, but am doing an interesting gig May 3 at Spectrum, 121 Ludlow Street; sort of a kickoff for Field Recordings, but doing a bit of new music - and recording - with the following: Bobby Zankel, alto; Hayes Greenfield, C melody; Randy Sandke, trumpet; Brian Simontacchi, trombone; Kevin Ray, bass; Paul Austerlitz, clarinet; Lou Grassi, drums; Lewis Porter, piano; me on alto. Special guest: Matt Shipp, piano. I have a whole new project that will be done this night (well, some of it); the new music is killing me; can't sleep, but I think I'm almost done. come on out and listen. also, btw, Simontacchi, whom you may not know, is a young and brilliant player; he's at Hartt College, and to my ears is one of the most interesting new musicians around.
  14. recommend something for me with her (Rainey's great, I even worked with him once); I just don't find her playing compelling, but I am willing to be convinced otherwise.
  15. Ben Goldberg is just not that good a player; mystifed what people see in him; however, Eskelin is wonderful. And I like Ches Smith.
  16. I am changing my name to Lowenblick, in honor of this release.
  17. I will have to go back and listening; nice guy, fine pianist, but I always found his own music a little bit.....dull.
  18. I will join in the ant-Calt chorus; it's a disgusting book, he libels more than one person (some of whom I know), and I don't think that even his musical judgments are particularly good. And I would love to have a copy of that LP Living Legends.
  19. I may be wrong, then; but I seem to recall it was for an actual movie. I'll see if I can find out. I do know he got in some legal trouble for it.
  20. just as an aside, both Mike Bloomfield and Frank Zappa did porn soundtracks.
  21. Hot Sam is an interesing pianist; if you can, avoid the Collectables Reissue, which is a sonic botch, and get the Japanese Atlantic reissue.
