  1. diminishing isn't dismissing. while it's taboo among certain purists, and not to say that she didn't have talent aplomb, much of ella's career is very cabaret. for my tastes, it wears thin very quickly.
  2. e.g. the average starbucks demograph... nuff = said.
  3. they're simply mini-lp packages of the material we're discussing here.
  4. great discussion. i have the castro book and took the slant on elis for what it's worth. so many musicians of that genre seemed pretty outspoken. i like lon's suggestion of '20 anos de saudade' and, if i can find it for a decent price, will go for it. i like the fact that it's a double and seems to focus on the earlier more essential (and rare) material.
  5. i love this thread. more please. mark's best work, by a mile, have been his two most recent recordings for verve europe ('onice to every heart' and 'love is what stays') produced and played on by german trumpeter till bronner. by the way, is this cover a joke? 'mark murphy sings mostly dorothy fields...'
  6. i guarantee you i know where that back to the tracks pressing winds up...
  7. somehow this release from last fall got by me. the sidemen (and title for that matter) seem a shade unusual for haden. what say you? worth having?
  8. it is pretty charming, no? i didn't realize until recently that she was married to cesar camargo mariano (one of my favorite brazilian musicians).
  9. well, i'm curious about 'live in london'. i don't usually take to live recordings in this genre but elis' may be an exception. the two or three tracks represented on the cafe apres midi comp are spotty. usually the delicate brazilian rhythm sections aren't as relaxed and languid when playing in front of large crowds (and in my mind they're a large part of whether a record is successful).
  10. i've been asking myself why i know the calalogs of joyce and gal costa (much less the female bossa set) and not elis...
  11. i have what i think is a fairly decent brazilian collection of about 250-300 titles. it's represented by bossa (jobim, gilberto, astrud, et al), mpb (caymmi, djavan, bosca, regina), tropicalia (gil, veloso) and the more contemporary (ze, motta, seu jorge), but for some odd reason i have yet to really reckon with elis regina's catalog. lately i've been visiting the three recordings of hers i do have; 'elis & tom', 'aquarela do brasil', and a cafe apres midi compilation. the matierial here is all very sweet and varied, but i have a feeling i'm only scraping a small surface. i recognize that she's one of the more complex artists of her genre. tell me if you think she deserves further exploration, what you think and/or know of her, and what you've listened to and enjoyed (or not) by her. trivial fact: how many eponymous recordings are in elis' catalog? no fewer than 7...
  12. i beg to differ. venting frustration publicly on a newsgroup/bulletin board over a transaction before contacting the seller is in poor form. if we can't be kind to our own in this tiny microcosm/forum, then how sad is that?
  13. of course there are! ps: i used to frequent uncle tom in sangenjaya (ironically named for its owner), but here's one...
  14. they're worth seeing. they're more of an acoustic quartet format now than a fusion group, per se.
  15. here's an interesting trivial aside; everyone's favorite japanese store owner, hiroshi tanno, once owned a jazz kissaten (a jazz coffee shop) in the late 70's / early 80's named 'sesamie' in homage to this wonderful recording.
  16. $668.00 for basie mosaic....? (organissimo forums' own)
  17. i own the exact configuration above, only with two additional 2-drawer sets above the 3-drawer units. i've also had a laminate shelf made to utilitze the top surface. the material can-am uses is much nicer than any office filing cabinets i've seen. ps: the metal is powder coated to minimize any metallic harshness to touch and sight.
  18. i'm a nelson completist and fanatic. that having been said, 'soul battle' is hands down my least favorite session. it just doesn't gel. too much up front and too little in the back end maybe... ps: then again, given my experience around here, most of the regulars here may love the date and will tell you to run out and snag it today...
  19. i've been given more than a few maxell burns that skip. then again, that could go down to its encoding (the burn process) and have absolutely nothing to do with the media...
  20. cj; these are good albums, not great albums.
  21. i agree that there's nary a dud. in fact, if there is a single dud, i've yet to hear it. there's a fantastic vsop mini-lp reissue campaign occuring in japan right now that includes some fairly obscure vocalists.
  22. i have. several times under different circumstances (all on the business end of things). please don't misunderstand my prior post ("while pat has no shortage of arrogance himself, he has the goods to back it up.") to infer that he's an ass or anything of the sort. i simply mean to say what you said in a subsequent post; that a certain amount of arrogance goes with greatness. sometimes it's difficult for me to determine the line between healthy and unhealthy, again not that i feel pat's is unhealthy. ps: as a footnote, if you're going to determine whether a musician, or anyone for that matter, is arrogant (or nice or generous or genius or whatever), you're not going to get a good fix on any quality unless you spend some serious time with that person.
