  1. The Szwed book is really the definitive one, but 20 years have past and there are newer discoveries. Szwed is the best start with even more in-depth areas that are explored in Paul Youngquist's, "A Pure Solar World:..."
  2. It has a special place in my library as a signed copy. I took lessons from him in the early 70s and he's the last of my teachers still around. Looking forward to hearing the interview on your show. A wonderful man.
  3. Hey! I have a lot of recordings on that "mythical" label. Does that mean I'm cRaZy?
  4. Really? It was a proud example of longevity while other forums keep splitting theirs up in bits and pieces. A regular thread since September 19, 2003 - started by Ghost of Miles - of nearly 175,000 posts! <sigh...> sometimes change is hard.

  7. Well, like I said, the guys were scratching their heads and stroking their beards over this back then because they just didn't know how to do it without disturbing all of the other electronic functions. They may know now, but, again, maybe not because how many times would someone come in with such a thing? They didn't know then because they never had to deal with a hybrid 15 years ago and they still don't have to deal with older models now. I'm sure that the electronics on the recent ones are much different than on the first gens and so it's probably not a problem these days. Anyway, I'm not gonna worry about it. Between the built-in 6-disc changer, the cassette player, the direct to radio cable and the cassette to iPod setup, I've got plenty of options. Tho, I do see this video on the same setup (except it's a single disc player): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OGuPuCpusQ Maybe there's hope! Can't buy it at Target tho.
  8. Yeah, I had one of those one time and, yeah, the sound was bad and it used to slide off the station. A real pain. I think it may still be sitting in my glovebox.
  9. I think it if were truly wireless, then it'd be horrible, but like I said, it's not. Being a first gen Prius, audio places scratch their collective heads as to how to change audio out without disrupting other functions. This direct line to the radio using a mostly hidden cable was the final result - car audio guys could do this. That has turned out to be just fine for me. Mostly, my concerns with use are for cars that I rent for longer trips when I don't want to use my own car, so that's why I asked about USB ports (with stick use) because these rentals seem to have these ports nowadays.
  10. Well, it's an actual line to the built-in radio. It does have that "FM" sound to it, but it's sometimes better than the clackity-clack of a cassette-based system where the special cassette plugs into the iPod. All strange advantages and disadvantages based on what's desired at the time.
  11. I wanted to mention too (since I'm using it again in my car starting today), that I had installed - many years ago - a cable that's inside the central armrest compartment and goes to a classic iPod on one end and directly to the radio on the other. I tune in the radio to a specific station that is not being used and the iPod plays thru that. It's nice, cause the iPod is hidden and the music is instantaneous without having to fiddle with anything. It may be an ancient idea, but I still drive a car that's almost 16 years old.
  12. Thanks Kevin for that info. On the 160 GB iPod, I can get about 12-14,000 tunes, but if I can make it easier by just plugging in a stick (most of these here are 256 GB each), that would be nice. I'm not too concerned about folders because I would just have files, so it may not be a problem. As a backup plan, I'm still taking discs and an iPod, but I'd be happy to find out that the USB stick works.
  13. Ahhhh, OK. I'm expecting the upcoming rental car to not have a CD player, but I'm thinking of (hoping for?) the ability to plug a stick into the dashboard USB, hit "shuffle" on the dashboard display and be on my way.
  14. Your "player" is one that's inside the car? Does it even have a "shuffle" choice in its menu?
  15. I might be interested in this USB stick idea. Is it possible to shuffle the tunes on a stick when you've got it plugged in - or does it depend on what kind of system you have in the car? I may want to do this on my next rental car in a couple of weeks.
  16. Oh, man, Hefti's definitely my bag! He's strong, and can carry more than a tune!
  17. The Lil' Cuties page says that Target carries them. I've learned rather quickly, to my chagrin, that they don't know the difference between Lil' Cuties, Halos, and Clem 'n' Tina's, so I don't go anymore.
  18. I'm not sure I understand this. So, my choice is either hook up a phone everytime I get in the car or just start the car with a CD (or 6) already in it. It's kinda why I went off using an iPod - because before I went anywhere - even to the corner store - I had to hook something up. It's not that much extra (plug it in, put it in some kind of holder so it doesn't go flying off, press buttons to find tunes), but it's still many stages more than just starting the car which makes the music start automatically.
  19. Used to look forward to buying ice cream at Target - their own special brand, but soon Kroger took the same design and flavors and even expanded on it so I hardly go there anymore. Never bought any discs there. As I mentioned in another thread, I was surprised the last time I rented a car and there was no CD player (and the young girl who checked the car back in with the puzzled look after I mentioned my surprise), but now I'm expecting this to be the case when I rent for the Big Ears Fest. Still, I'll take along 10 discs just in case. No phone, so I'm hoping an iPod filled with over 12,000 tunes will be just fine.
  20. Yes, quite a few heart surgeries! I don't know when the last one happened and how he's doing physically these days, but I would imagine that could be one of the reasons he's deciding on this. I'm just going by what he's saying in the article: lack of focus with ageing, and so on.
  21. Well, he has his reasons - wanting to enjoy himself without having the pressure of needing to actually be somewhere on time. He's the last of my teachers alive - percussion and otherwise. I'd like for him to continue living his life to the fullest - and if that means being on a permanent vacation, then I'm all for it!
