Nice to hear/see the Grace Slick/Sesame oldie! Well, you're on your own next year (aren't we all) with "17" being prime and all. Tho an anagram of its Roman numeral is the Latin VIXI which means "I have lived" and so I hope you can say that! Your 71st will yield an ultimate arithmetic that even those outside of Texas-UIL can applaud!

I've seen a copy online that sold for just over 10 bucks, but isn't a "Criterion" (whatever diff that presents), but even one of those is on eBay asking $55. Of course, it's probably not mint condition, but really? $500 being the "cheap" end? I can't help but see puns all over the titles of these two tunes! "I gotta break, baby!" (it's the rekkid talkin', man!) "Yup, it's just a mean, old world..."

What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
rostasi replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion
A friend of mine, who lives in Norway now, studied with Shapey. When we lived in Chicago, he used to tell me these stories every week about Shapey's temper tantrums and complete dislike for contemporary classical music of many kinds. Rarely had a nice word to say about fellow composers and/or teachers at the U. of Chicago. He was an absolute tyrant most of the time - as a teacher and, just generally, as a human being. -

Ted Hearne - Furtive Movements (Ashley Bathgate / Ron Wiltrout)
rostasi replied to JSngry's topic in Recommendations
Over here is a favorite place to pick up NEOS product at a fair price and get to listen to excerpts as well. Right now, there appears to be over 250 titles in stock. Certain works could be heard thru YouTube. -

Thanks for this. He's one of those young composers whose name shows up on composer sites I visit as well as composer-based emails I get, but I'd yet to hear any of his work. I'll see, sometimes, his "unusual" combinations of instruments that spark my interest, but that's usually as far as it goes. I've been meaning to mention to you a label, NEOS, that I've really loved for a quite a few years now that really highlights some very good younger, "new-crop" composers and performers that you might find interesting in varying degrees. I don't know how accessible the music is thru Spotify, Pandora, or whatever you use for streaming, but you might be able to explore some works thru their website. It is one of those labels that, with enough money, I'd be a near completist. -
Thanks for this. Always nice to see Krenny Burrell.

Pauline had always been nice to me whenever I saw her, but she was such a very stern woman - which is kind of unexpected when you think about the music she introduced to many generations of listeners. A funny story: when I was a young man around 11 or 12, I had already owned her work, "I of IV" on the LP with Reich's "Come Out," but the piece that really made me kind of "fall in love" with her was a piece for flute, string bass, and percussion called "Outline." At my young age, I was dreaming of meeting this composer with the lovely name "Pauline" and had decided that she had to have been young and beautiful if she wrote such fantastic, creative music - ha! No, it didn't really make any sense ... and later finding out that her rather "manly" looks were part of her lesbian proclivities - ha - oh man, I was soooooo surprised - ha! She left us with some wonderful music - and I suppose that's really another bright side of creativity - leaving memorable work for the ages and future generations to discover and enjoy.

Wonderful Kishore Kumar tune. I was fortunate enough to see him perform live the summer before he died of a heart attack. As a bit of an aside, the great singer Balamuralikrishna passed away today. Though his style is not rooted in filmi, he was a master vocalist of the Carnatic style of music.

No, I mean that I wouldn't want to be represented by something that's a collagen-based foodstuff. ... and I'd want to be something definitely healthier than what resulted after the 'stones gave of themselves!

I wouldn't mind - as long as the final result wasn't gelatinous.

All kinds of people give reasons for their perceptions as fact. Social, political, and especially (because of its inherent ineffableness) cultural observations are all over the map in wildly differing ways. Yes, it's damn frustrating to hear people expound on self-glorified attitudes, but I've found that the worst way of trying to convince someone is by pointing out, relentlessly, that something they're saying is not factual. Hell, I've lost friends just by having a different viewpoint without trying to convince them and they end up getting all butthurt and that's that. Sometimes, one will say that they're doing all of this "correcting" for the benefit of others (so that they don't become hoodwinked into believing some erroneous concept), but really all you can hope for is that people just do their homework and hope that they use some sort of good analytic thought to come to their conclusions. Using the two examples above, I'm thinking that the problem may be with definitions. Maybe there's a disagreement about what "depth of field" means? How about the phrase "sonic warmth and appeal"? Thinking that Allen is a walking fake-news site when it comes to his personal observations isn't going to suddenly produce endearment from him. It's going to do exactly what it has done - make him run away while the person trying to do the "convincing" is left out in the cold - essentially accomplishing nothing positive in the end ... as well as losing the election.

I'm guessing that this is the same as the Connoisseur Society recording on cassette that I've had for years. A favorite. -

We love that series here as well. Didn't realize until now that it is told from the point of view of the child.

Well, actually, he had this recent gig on Hustle for twice as long as "...U.N.C.L.E." I remember catching a couple of episodes by accident and not being particularly taken by it, but I may not have actually given it a fair shake. ... and thanks to whoever posted the Amazon deal-of-the-day for the "...U.N.C.L.E." set. I bought myself this as a birthday present - 41 discs/105 episodes for only $46. Still under $50 with US Amazon Prime now. In the days when over 90% of my TV watching consisted of "Educational TV" (that was Chicago's WTTW) and programs like Soul, The Jazz Set, and Black Journal, the "standard" or popular show that always stood out for me as a child was "...U.N.C.L.E." to the point where I would always play with a telescoping antenna that I had somehow found or broke off an old radio and would whisper into it "open channel D" while humming some of the great Goldsmith/Fried music. Somewhere around here are cassettes of barely audible recordings directly off the TV from those days. Thankfully, you can buy 6 or 7 discs of it now.

Surprised to read earlier today that David McCallum is also 83. About 1:40 to 5:00:
