I like The Dealer too. I didn't really discover it until the 70's, I think, because I heard the track Jim-Jeannie off that Impulse compilation, The Drums and wanted to know what it was from. Do you folks remember those 3-LP Impulse sets: The Drums, The Saxophone, The Bass ... God, I loved those.

Yes! Definitely! I've been trying to get Francis to release one devoted to the great early keyboardists. We'll see... -

Me too. I have had old friends disappear from emailing to just doing all of their correspondence by way of social media. -

That Volume 4 above is probably the best-selling of the Ethiopiques series. I know people that if they have only one disc of music from that country, it is that one. ...and a good choice at that! -
Yes, all three of those recommendations are excellent starting points!

I have that t-shirt too! (it gets comments!)

The last owner of a local restaurant that I used to make CDs for requested that I don't include Beach Boys stuff. Her only connection with them was on a rather superficial level tho, so it could be understandable. I've no problem with surf music - especially the grittier forms of both early and ultra-modern styles (volumes of really fine compilations exist!). Also, we've been taking care of a "porch kitty" and when our "Lux" gets all worked up about his presence outdoors, we just explain to him that it's his friend "Lux Exterior." Mats has that wonderful FMP box set. Good to see that beautiful thing!

One of our cats is named Lux.

I still do! - and I have the t-shirt as well! Seriously. I do. ...as for Endless Summer - probably, next to Marvin Gaye's Anthology, one of the best compilations 1974 had to offer. Great pre-Pet Sounds work.

Is there a "real music" playlist on Spotify that someone can point me to?

When I was a manager of a record store in Chicago, a musician friend I worked with would grab a random record out of the bins and wave it in the air and say that somebody, somewhere would think that it was one of the best damn albums ever made. I laughed. After the blossoming of the Internet, I'm more inclined to believe him.

Oh man ... New Shade of Blue is a long-time favorite of mine. Lots of plays of that album growing up. Headphones on while sitting at a set of drums going over and over the Billy Hart licks. Gonna have to play some YouTube vids of it while I search the LPs here. Thanks for the reminder! Have a soft spot for this one too. Not everyone's taste with her vocals, but it had a special resonance for me growing up.

His scene in Car Wash that I'll always remember. Also, I wish Franklyn Ajaye had stayed with comedy. Liked those first three albums of his.

Henry Threadgill and Zooid, Austin, Texas 4/8/2017
rostasi replied to epistrophy arts's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
There's still time. We're doing Southwest at $118 to Nashville and driving I-40 to Knoxville (ca. 180 miles). Much cheaper than flying straight into Knoxville using American (close to $400).- 6 replies

Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
rostasi replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
So this is really the case? A fellow on another board was asking about this and I wasn't sure if they were just reprinting the old ones at various times or if it really was the end of these. There are quite a few that you can still get thru Amazon for a pretty decent price, so I sent the fellow there. I've got all of the Singles and Selects (rodcast a few years ago?), but I'd like to take advantage of the free shipping, so I'm gonna have a looky-see on some others! -
Well, I had to do the math on this one to confirm the idea of 10,000+ The picture makes it look like MG's shelves are larger than 36", but I can't be sure. I'm guessing that they are exactly one meter width each, so that would be 39", but I'm figuring conservatively at 36" in the math below. Here's the math based on what MG says: MG says: “two and a half tonnes” In pounds (because as an American, it’s easier for me to figure): about 5500 lbs. I have many boxes of these. They hold about 110 LPs and weigh about 60 lbs each (allowing for the occasional box set), so if we do the math: 5500 lbs ÷ 60 lbs. = ca. 92 boxes X 110 each = 10,120 LPs ****************************************************************** If you use his “forty-seven metres” as a length measurement, you get: ca. 1850 inches. Figure 180 LPs per 36 inches and you get 1850 ÷ 36 = ca. 52 and 52 X 180 LPs = 9360 LPs so give or take - 9360 to 10,120 - we’re pretty close to 10,000. Online vinyl junkies appear to agree with the "180 LPs/36 inches" and I checked it here. Bottom shelf, for instance has 182 and the top shelf with more box sets has 155:
