What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

I played the title track from "Volunteers" for my 4th of July show. Fun revisiting that album. -

Chess was important to me back in 1972, but not so much now.

Well, I have a tendency to buy books on Sun Ra and I've been happy with this. It's pretty much what the reviews say in most cases. Yes, it's from this guy's blog, but the extraneous stuff has been filtered out and you get more of a handheld paper edition of a discography with two or three pages on each album and its place in the larger scheme of things. Yes, you can usually find info online if you wish, but it all depends on why you would buy reference books like this (if you do).

I remember actual enclosed booths that were so small that two people couldn't turn around in them. No chairs, so you wouldn't get too comfy. I was trying to remember if there were listening stations at Rose Records - Chuck'll have to remind me. Hegewisch Records? Maybe. Henze turned up full blast in a store actually excites me! I'll add: the reason we don't have nice things like listening stations and the like is for pretty much one reason: people.

https://variety.com/2024/music/obituaries-people-news/john-mayall-dead-blues-legend-1236082294/ What a life! Ninety is damn good for a blues-rocker. My Mayall story comes from when I was on KCHU FM here in Dallas during my high school days. I very frequently filled in for no-shows of other programs. It was Xmas in the middle of the week and I filled in - much to the chagrin of family members who thought I should be with them. Anyway, after about 12 hours on the air, I was still waiting for the morning guy to show up, so I just stuck Mayall's The Turning Point on the turntable and just let it play thru like the live concert that it was - turning it over to the B-side as well. Well, a guy named Walter B---- shows up yelling at the top of his lungs, "YOU CAN'T DO THAT HERE!!" over and over. It wasn't because of any legal reason (as it would be now), but he kept screaming that the album is something that's played on that "other station" - meaning the "classic rock" one and "we don't play that crap here!" Still like that album.

I'm getting the impression that he wants more than "I'm looking for some jazz." He wants you to have a list so he can get you in and out of there while making bucks in the least amount of time. It also sounds like he'd be mighty pissed if you didn't buy something, so your upcoming days of visiting will probably be numbered. Retail doesn't need ornery old guys ... and if retail does that to you, then you need to do something else. It's a very strange quirk of personality these independent record store operators often have. Locally, we had one guy who was so revered that they made a film about him and his store - even tho the guy was, at best, for many years, a tax evader and, at worst, a pedophile. ... and another guy who recently killed himself had a store just down the street with this sign: "...I gave up caring what anybody thinks about me or the way I do my business at least 20 years ago. And that was the day I truly became happy.”

Well, I guess he doesn't have to worry much about theft. He owns an archive. He doesn't have to worry about his assets and so he's just "allowing" people to visit his museum. It may be called a "business," but it isn't anymore than if I allowed people into our house to buy something that they were looking for. He's one of those record "collectors" with no interest in having a business.
