  1. Saw Walrath/Adams with Mingus in the Netherlands in the very hot European summer of 1976, and as far as I remember Adams was pretty restrained at the time.
  2. I agree about the inventiveness, but the vibrato's still too much to my taste... I have to admit that I can't stand heavy vibrato; for instance, I can't listen to Sidney Bechet and Sarah Vaughan very long for exactly that reason.
  3. If you like a vibrato like hers, that is...
  4. When I changed topics, tried to post or send messages the board timed out a several times the last few days.
  5. Joe Alexander - Blue Jubilee - Jazzland JLP 23/JLPS 923; recorded June 20, 1960. I'm not 100% sure about this one, though
  6. The clocks went back last week in Europe, not in America.
  7. Sorry, I hadn't seen that; I'm no longer following the Japanese reissue threads. I guess those threads will dry up, now that Hiroshi soon won't be able to get new CDs anymore.
  8. Hiroshi Tanno just told me he won't be able to supply most new Japanese CDs from January 1, 2010. He'll keep running his record shop, so people can still contact him about used records and CDs from that date. Mr Tanno has provided me with many gems over the years and I'm very sorry to see this happening. His service has always been excellent.
  9. When he was still posting here I got a similar curt and gruff response when I inquired after the availability of his Gigi Gryce bio. Not a very nice guy.
  10. I was booted off AAJ years ago for reasons that are still unclear to me. I asked owner Ricci why but didn't get an answer. Oh well...
  11. Yes, even the 2nd edition of the Monk discography doesn't seem to distinguish between the 2 pianists. On the other hand I have a Don Byas cd entitled Midnight at Minton's that has 2 tracks presumably with Monk that aren't in the Monk discography: "Uptown" and "Body and Soul". Is there a source for the correct discography of early bootlegged Monk? (Or maybe the book under discussion which I'm about to order has one.) Kelley's book doesn't have a discography, just a list of selected recordings.
  12. (second attempt to post this, the first attempt timed out...) A thread could be deleted by using the "moderation options" drop-down menu at the left-hand bottom of the first page of the thread, but I don't know if that's still possible.
  13. Just tried again to reply to a message and function not working.. Same here.
  14. Click on the various titles on the playlist in the right-hand column of this page; all albums mentioned there have been issued on CD.
  15. I get that, but it's a problem with my connection - and it's fine this afternoon - dreadful yesterday. MG It's definitely not a problem with my connection, all other sites load perfectly.
  16. I keep getting error messages today like "the page is not available" and the board is frequently timing out. Anyone else having problems?
  17. Maybe the expected postal strike in the U.K.?
  18. I agree about Sony/Columbia's mastering of older music; their Louis Armstrong and Charlie Christian boxes are examples of - to my ears - "less than excellent" masterings, and I'm not even talking about their 1990s "Roots 'n' Blues" CD reissues, which generally sound horrible.
  19. While I agree that the original box is a great collection of Billie Holiday's wonderful music, I don't like the mastering. I was disappointed by the sound quality; Billie’s voice and some of the instruments at times sound harsh and piercing to my ears. Judging by other issues of some of this Sony-owned material, such as the excellent Teddy Wilson CDs with Holiday on the Scottish Hep label, which were mastered by the late John R.T. Davies, I think the Sony mastering could have been better. Just a guess, but maybe the mastering engineer decided to boost the higher frequencies to make the sound more detailed and transparent. This is done quite often these days and many times the result is what I would call a "shrill" sound. Many people seem to like it, but I don't.
  20. You can find the info earlier in this thread. See also Ron's post above (#83).
  21. I had this set but sold it, I found it disappointing and I have more than enough Pepper albums that do more for me; I like Pepper better in a quartet setting.
  22. Kind remarks are always appreciated. The website is about-time-records.com/ Link to AT Records
  23. You may have a point.
